In Malaysia, floods force mass evacuations
January 2, 1999
Web posted at: 12:06 a.m. EST (0506 GMT) KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (CNN) Heavy monsoon rains have forced more than 1,500 people to flee their homes to escape flooding, news reports said on Saturday. Since the drenching rains began on Sunday, Malaysians in six districts of Pahang state in the northeast peninsula region have been evacuated from their homes, the national Bernama news agency said. Dozens of people sought shelter in community halls and schools in the neighboring states of Johor, Terengganu and Kelantan, according to news reports. On Friday, a 14-year-old boy in Kelantan was missing and feared drowned while bathing in a river, Bernama said. There were no new reports of injuries from the flooding. The northeast monsoon normally starts in mid-November and ends in March.

Malaysia rolls out red carpet for Castro
Malaysian King Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah (right) and prime minister Mahathir (middle) welcome Castro KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia Cuban President Fidel Castro is receiving VIP treatment from authorities on his tour of Malaysia. The Cuban leader, in a pinstriped suit and blue tie instead of his trademark green battle fatigues, was taken by Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad by limousine to tour his new capital city, Putrajaya, outside Kuala Lumpur. They witnessed their foreign ministers signing a framework agreement on economic, scientific and technical issues paving the way for greater trade, training, and the sharing of research facilities. "We are the rebels of the West," Castro said during a speech. "And Malaysia is the rebel of the East." Taking a page from Mahathir's speech book, Castro gave a foreign policy address and said that the U.S.-led drive toward freer trade and globalization was enriching wealthy nations at the expense of the poor.

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) A high-ranking U.S. envoy has urged Malaysia's leaders to crack down on nuclear trafficking, but the country's foreign minister said there was no immediate need to tighten export controls to prevent the spread of technology. The U.S.-Malaysian discussions follow the seizure of a shipment of nuclear centrifuge parts made by a Malaysian company that is majority-controlled by Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's son. The talks come at a highly delicate time for Abdullah, who is on the verge of calling general elections. The opposition has said that a police probe that cleared the company controlled by his son, Kamaluddin Abdullah, of knowingly making nuclear parts for Libya smacks of favoritism.

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (CNN) Malaysia says any first strike by Australia against terrorists on its soil would be regarded as an "act of war". Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad told media late Monday that Malaysia was opposed to any attempt by one country to impose its laws on another country. Mahathir was responding to earlier comments by Australian Prime Minister John Howard that pre-emptive action against terrorists or military threats in other countries can be justified.

Malaysia's Mahathir feeling 'great', markets told to breathe easy
April 6, 1999

Web posted at: 11:53 p.m. EST (0453 GMT)
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (CNN) Malaysia's worried financial markets were issued assurances Wednesday that the country's long-reigning Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad was on the road to recovery. Mahathir entered his fifth day in the hospital Wednesday where he is being treated for a lung infection but an aide said the 73-year-old was feeling "great" and walking around. "His condition is great," the aide told Reuters. "He was walking around the ward yesterday." Mahathir, 73, was taken to the National Heart Institute last Friday for treatment of a lung infection. His doctors said on Sunday that he was expected to remain in hospital for a few days. Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said on Tuesday that there was no cause for concern and that Mahathir, who had a heart bypass operation in 1989, was suffering from bronchitis, not a heart problem.
