History
Aboriginal Malays (Orang Asli) began moving down the Malay peninsula from south-western China about 10,000 years ago. The peninsula came under the rule of the Cambodian-based Funan, the Sumatran-based Srivijaya and the Java-based Majapahit empires, before the Chinese arrived in Melaka in 1405. Islam arrived in Melaka at about the same time and spread rapidly. Melaka's wealth soon attracted European powers, and the Portuguese took control in 1511, followed by the Dutch in 1641. The British established a thriving port in Penang in 1786 and took over Melaka in 1795. The British traded for spices and colonised the interior of the peninsula when tin was discovered. East Malaysia came into British hands via the adventurer Sir James Brooke (who was made Rajah of Sarawak in 1841 after suppressing a revolt against the Sultan of Brunei) and the North Borneo Company (which administered Sabah from 1882). Gradually, the Federated Malay States were created in piecemeal fashion over the course of the 19th century. The final pieces of the Malaysian mosaic fell into place when Britain took formal control of both Sabah and Sarawak after WWII. The indigenous labour supply was insufficient for the needs of the developing rubber and tin industries, so the British brought large numbers of Indians into the country, altering the peninsula's racial mix.

History of Malaysia Explained
Merchants and adventurers from many nations were attracted to the rich trading centres. The Indians had a lasting influence on the art and culture while the Arabs introduced Islam, Malaysia's national religion. The Portuguese and the Dutch introduced European economic ideas and methods while the British laid the foundation of it's political structure.
Early History
There's not much recorded of the prehistoric advancement, but local archaeologist did discover metal objects in the region of Klang and Selangor jungles. Historians believed that the eearliset organized political states first emerged in the north. Traders from many land were sent to Langkasuka, Kedah. By about A.D 900 most of the states came under the rule of the Srivijayan Empire based in Palembang, Indonesia.
A Chola raid from India crippled the empire in 1025. From then came the prominence of Melaka or Melacca better known by foreigners at about 1300. As it became a trading hub, and it's rise coincided with rapid spread of Islam to the penisula. Melaka's royal family claimed descent from Alexander the Great. All subsequent Malay rulers made the same claim.

Malaysia History
History books have made note of Malaysia since the Srivijaya Empire, which controlled much of the region from the 7th century to the 10th century. Afterward, the first kingdom to be centered on the Malay Peninsula was founded in Melaka in the early 15th century. The increase in the spice trade turned Melaka into one of Southeast Asia's leading ports. Subsequent alliances with China and Arabia brought Chinese and Arab traders together in Malaysia, initiating the unique Chinese-Arab cultural blend. Local control of the peninsula, however, was short lived. Portuguese traders and soldiers took over Melaka in 1571, adding yet another influence to the cultural mix, and remained until the Dutch took over in 1641. In time, the Dutch were gradually supplanted by the British, who turned Penang into a thriving port and eventually brought all of Malaysia into their colonial empire. Malaysia agitated for and won its independence in 1957. During the past two decades, until it was rocked by the economic crash in 1997-1998 that affected most of Asia, the country's increasing commitment to modernization continued to pay off. Today it appears to be back on the path to prosperity.

A Brief History of Malaysia
South East Asia Late 18th Century
Shaded areas indicate a combination of claimed power and commercial and political activity by European powers. Settlement
In the early 17th century the Dutch established trading bases in Southeast Asia. The British role on the peninsula began in 1786 when Francis Light of the British East India Company, searching for a site for trade and a naval base, obtained the cession of the island of Pinang from the Sultan of Kedah. In 1791 the British agreed to make annual payments to the Sultan, and in 1800, the Sultan ceded Province Wellesley on the mainland. In 1819 the British founded Singapore and in 1824 they formally acquired Malacca from the Dutch. A joint administration was formed for Pinang, Malacca and Singapore, which became known as the Straits Settlements. British in Malaya
In the late 19th century, a number of events led Great Britain to play a more direct part in the affairs of the peninsula. There was conflict between Chinese settlers, who worked in the tin mines, and Malays; there were civil wars among the Malays; and there was an increase in piracy in the western part of the peninsula. Merchants asked the British to restore order.

BASIC INFO. ECONOMY GEOGRAPHY ... MALAYSIA The Malay peninsula has been a commercial center since antiquity. Originally Hindu, with an Indian flavor, the region turned to Islam in the 1400s. Europeans arrived, first the Portuguese and then the Dutch (1641). Britain made its move in 1789 and eventually the Malay states became British protectorates. The British expanded mining (tin) and agriculture (rubber plantations). Because large numbers of Chinese were brought in as laborers, the balance tilted until the economy was dominated by ethnic Chinese. At the same time, Britain was also solidifying it hold on Borneo. In World War II, Japan overran Malaya and, after the war, a federation was set up to eliminate much of the confusion that exited between the Malay states. t this early 1950s period, the communist party mounted a rebellion that bedeviled the country. A home-rule government was granted in 1955 and independence in 1957 as the Federation of Malaya. Six years later, Malaysia was created which brought together Malaya, Singapore, North Borneo (Sabah) and Sarawak (though Singapore went its own way in 1965 and achieved independence then). Since independence, Malaysia has worked hard at becoming an economic center, so it was particularly hard-hit during the Asian financial crisis in 1997-1998. The two tallest buildings in the world were also erected in Kuala Lampur in the 1980s.

Malaysia History Situated in the heart of Southeast Asia at one of the world's major crossroads, Malaysia has always been pivotal to trade routes from Europe, the Orient, India and China. Its warm tropical climate and abundant natural blessings made it a congenial destination for immigrants as early as 5,000 years ago when the ancestors of the Orang Asli, the indigenous peoples of Peninsular Malaysia, settle here, probably the pioneers of a general movement from China and Tibet.

History: The region now known as Malaysia was first mentioned in Chinese and Sanskrit records of the 7th and 8th centuries. In subsequent centuries the area was under the influence of Thai and Indonesian empires until, in the 15th century, it became a centre of Islamic influence centred on Malacca. Colonised by the British in the 19th century, the 11 separate states of Peninsular Malaysia fell to the Japanese during the Second World War. In 1946, as British Protectorates, they were united in the Malayan Union, which became the Federation of Malaya in 1948. In the same year, communist guerrillas launched an armed independence struggle which continued until 1960, although Malaya became independent (within the Country Information Travel - Domestic Travel - International Social Profile ... Introduction
In the Southeast Asia region, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei are the three countries where Islam is the predominant religion. Indonesia, with 90% of its¡¦ 210 million people being Muslim, is also the largest Muslim country in the world. In Malaysia, a multiracial, multi-religious, and multi-cultural country with a population of 23 million, Malay Muslims stand at a little more than half of the population, followed by Chinese and Indians, the other two large ethnic groups, and many other minorities from various ethnic origins. Ethnicity and religion are closely related in Malaysia. In a very simplistic generalization, Malays are Muslim by constitutional definition, and people of other races are usually not; the other races are free to practice their own religion.
