    The Internal Security Act (ISA)
For decades Malaysia has received international criticism in relation to its security legislation, particularly the Internal Security Act (ISA). The legislation violates internationally recognised human rights standards, and has been used against people peacefully expressing their religious and political beliefs.
However, since the attacks on the United States of America on 11 September 2001, governments that were once critical of such legislation have suddenly fallen silent. Having enacted similar security legislation in their own countries they no longer speak out for the protection of fundamental human rights in Malaysia.
The ISA predates the 11 September attacks, being born out of temporary measures enacted to counter a specific threat at the end of British colonial rule. Justification for its continued use changed over the years, as newly perceived threats were identified by successive Malaysian governments, and the legislation was incrementally amended to all but remove judicial safeguards, initially incorporated into the law to prevent its abuse.

Government to take helm of Malaysia's Renong group
Mahathir says he does not know what is going on at Renong and declined comment because the companies involved are publicly traded By Alex Frew McMillan in Hong Kong KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia The Malaysian government is expected to take control of the country's biggest industrial group next week. Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad's administration plans to wrest control of the Renong group from its chairman, Halim Saad. Officials have said the takeover would mark a new get-tough-on-debt approach, showing the days of favorable treatment for the politically connected are over in Malaysia. Halim is a protégé of Malaysia's former finance minister, Daim Zainuddin. But Daim, once the prime minister's closest adviser, quit in June. There was speculation Daim and Mahathir fell out over economic policy. A change in control at Renong would be the biggest consequence since Daim's exit left the prime minister alone at the top.

Malaysia bans government subscriptions to three publications
    February 18, 1999
Web posted at: 2:35 a.m. EST (0735 GMT) KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (CNN) Malaysia has slapped a ban on government subscriptions to three major international publications deemed too critical of the Southeast Asian nation. The Far Eastern Economic Review and Asiaweek, both Hong Kong- based weekly magazines, and the International Herald Tribune daily newspaper were blacklisted because they "clearly show they are unsympathetic toward our nation," a government order obtained Thursday said. "These foreign publications have been overzealous in their criticism toward Malaysia," Education Ministry Director General Abdul Shukor Abdullah was quoted as saying in the January 9 edict. "It's not proper for us to support and subscribe to these magazines and newspaper," he said, ordering all education officials to terminate their subscriptions.
