Five important elements for the new Malaysian culture to attain developed- nation status for the country in the 21st century
The Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, said in the National Day message that Malaysia should have a new culture to attain the developed nation status for the country. There are at least five important elements for the new Malaysian culture to attain developed-nation status for the country. Firstly, Malaysia should embrace the culture of meritocracy, whether in the public or private sector. Malaysians should be able to receive due recognition and reward for their capabilities and talents in the country, and not, as in the past, compelled to go overseas before securing international recognition and reward. Professor Wang Gung-Wu is one good example. Wang Gung-Wu had to go overseas before he could get international recognition for his academic abilities and distinction, capping his distinguished academic career as Vice Chancellor of the Hong Kong University. There is no doubt that if Wang Gung-Wu had not gone overseas, and had remained in the University of Malaya as lecturer, he would never have attained the highest academic honours of being appointed as Vice Chancellor of one of the eight local universities in the country. This is a loss not only to Professor Wang Gung-Wu but even more important, to Malaysia!

TANPA DAGING MASAKAN
The Vegetarian Culture of Malaysia

by Julian Bynoe Besides hosting this year’s Commonwealth Games, the South East Asian nation of Malaysia is also a haven for vegetarian delicacies. Its 21 million inhabitants, who spread over 329,725 square kilometres through the island chain of the South China Sea, have been waving the vegetarian flag for centuries now. The history of Malaysian cuisine reveals the diversity of its influence. The Malay, Chinese, Indian and European people, have all contributed to this nation’s diet for many centuries. In the 3rd and 4th century, Malaysia and Indonesia were part of the Hindu Javanese Empire, connecting the Subcontinent’s Hindu and Muslim religious diets. The Hindu Vedic laws and Islamic taboos against meat still influence today’s population. Westerners with their omnivorous appetites first came from Portugal, Holland and England 500 years ago. This immigration explains why most Malays have a sweet tooth for European desserts. During the 15th century, the Chinese Ming dynasty sent diplomatic missions to the port city of Malacca, 160 kilometres southeast of Kuala Lumpur, in an effort to develop political and economic ties. The marriage of Melaka Sultan Mamsur Shah of Malaysia, and Ming Princess Hang Li Po of China, opened up trade in spices and other foods. The Chinese merchants integrated their delicacies into the Malay and Euro cultures, and helped to create a community known as the Baba Nonya (derived from the Malay bapak [grandfather] and Portuguese nona [grandmother]).

Malaysia is a multi-cultural nation with a fascinating potpourri of Malay, Chinese, Indian, Peranakan (Straits Chinese), Eurasian, Kadazan, Iban, Bidayuh, Dayak and indigenous Orang Asli peoples. MALAY CUSTOMS The Malays are a race known for its rich traditional values and habits. Visitors to a Malay household are treated with respect as a token of hospitality. Light snacks and drinks will be offered and to refuse them would be impolite. In the olden days, hosts are expected to offer sekapur sireh (a preparation of sireh leaves stored in a box to be eaten with a thin layer of slaked lime, gambier and slices of the areca nut. Today this custom is only practised by those living in the villages. Visitors are also expected to dress decently and be well-mannered when visiting. The Malays do not take pork or alcohol. It is forbidden in their religion, Islam. Preparation of meals for Malays must be halal, that is according to the Muslim law. Most Malays still prefer eating with their hands. For the Malay guests, a finger bowl is a must when serving. Be sure you do not drink it, it is for washing the hands. The giant drum or Rebana Ubi in Malay is a favourite among the locals in the east coast. These drums are used during wedding ceremonies and recreational competitions.

MALAYSIAN CULTURE: CULTURAL MOSAIC
by Tania Suk Yin Khoo
Professor Kong Fah Lee, John Abbott College (Autumn 2000)
The warm and hospitable people of Malaysia proudly represent a country of cultural diversity. Since the beginning of its history, cultures have been meeting and mixing to form a nation of diversity where Chinese, Malays, Indians and the indigenous tribes of Sabah and Sarawak live in cultural harmony. Each culture is very serious about maintaining their traditions but still manage to live together in harmony. Over fifteen hundred years ago, a Malay kingdom in Bujang Valley welcomed traders from India and China, and with them came the Buddhist and Hindu religions . Approximately a thousand years later, Arab traders arrived in Malacca and they brought with them the official religion of Malaysia, Islam. Malays mostly speak Bahasa Malaysian , the official language of Malaysia, as well most are practicing Muslims, as Islam is also the official religion of the country. Malays celebrate Ramadan, an important period of fasting. Boys and girls are both circumcised, and marriages are still arranged. Malaysian Chinese also speak the official language of their country, but they also speak English, Tamil, and Chinese dialects. Most Chinese practice Buddhism while others practice Taoism, some are Muslim or Christian. A very important holiday is Chinese New Year, when the whole family gets dressed up, visit family and feast.

MALAYSIAN CULTURE
Throughout the world, there are thousands of fascinating cultures to be explored and studied. Some cultures are well known to lots of people while others are not. Many countries are made up of several different cultures, some more predominant than others are. This mixture of cultures can make for an interesting combination. Such is the case in Malaysia where the population comprises 11 million Malays, 5 million Chinese, 1.5 million Indians and 85000 people that are of other backgrounds. In Malaysia, some aspects of the different cultures have been assimilated while others remain as they were when they were brought to Malaysia.
MALAYSIAN MALAYS
The Malays were the original inhabitants of the Malay Peninsula when it was taken over by the British in 1913. At that time, it was believed that each ethnic group within Malaysia should have a specific economic role in society. Some of the English-educated Malays became part of the administration while the rest of the Malays kept their traditional roles as fishermen and farmers. Nowadays, the Malays are found mostly in the rural areas of Peninsular Malaysia and in the area of Kuala Lumpur, the national capital. Most Malays speak Bahasa Malaysian, or Malay, the official language of Malaysia and all Malaysians are encouraged to learn English. Also, most Malays are practicing Muslims, as Islam is the official religion of this country. Ramadan, a period of fasting, is observed and the Malays make trips to Mecca to worship their God, Allah.

Malaysia boasts an impressive number of first rate virtuoso performers in the Chinese Classical tradition, although most train in China or Singapore. Conductors are trained in the Western Classical tradition, in Europe or America. Most of the music played comes from Hong Kong, Taiwan and China, but a number of local composers, who incorporate elements of traditional Malay music, are becoming increasingly prominent.
The MPO is the only organization which employs a full complement of full time musicians in every instrumental section, but there are a number of other amateur and professional ensembles based in Kuala Lumpur and other parts of the country. The Orkestra Kuala Lumpur, run by Kuala Lumpur City Hall, and the Radio Television Malaysia Orchestra are full time ensembles which specialize in performing popular music. The RTMO also sponsors an orchestra based in Kuching, Sarawak.
Fully amateur ensembles include the Kuala Lumpur Symphony Orchestra, the Putra Symphony Orchestra, the Penang Symphony Orchestra and Penang State Orchestra, both based in the North of the country, and the Sarawak based Orkestra Kuching. All perform concerts on a regular basis, two or three times a year.

Malaysia's cultural mosaic is marked by many different cultures, but several in particular have had especially lasting influence on the country.
