HISTORY OF MALAWI
Early History and Colonialism
In 1944 the protectorate's first political movement, the moderate Nyasaland African Congress, was formed, and in 1949 the government admitted the first Africans to the legislative council. In 1953 the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland (linking Nyasaland, Northern Rhodesia, and Southern Rhodesia) was formed, over the strong opposition of Nyasaland's African population, who feared that the more aggressively white-oriented policies of Southern Rhodesia (see Zimbabwe) would eventually be applied to them. The Banda Regime and Modern Malawi
Banda led the country in the era of independence, first as prime minister and, after Malawi became a republic in 1966, as president; he was made president for life in 1971. He quickly alienated other leaders by governing autocratically, by allowing Europeans to retain considerable influence within the country, and by refusing to oppose white-minority rule in South Africa. Banda crushed a revolt led by Chipembere in 1965 and one led by Yatuta Chisiza in 1967.

Chewa of Malawi Location. The central area for the Chewa people is Lilongwe, Dowa, and Ntchisi, with many more living in Mchinji, Kasungu, Ntcheu, Salima, Nkhota Kota, and Dedza. As the Chewa are the largest ethnic group in Malawi, some are scattered throughout the country, but they live primarily in the Central Region. History. The ancestors of the Chewa lived in what is now Zaire. They migrated to Malawi in the fourteenth or fifteenth century. The Chewa chiefs have been the traditional rulers of Central Malawi for many years. The first President of Malawi after independence from Great Britain in 1964, Dr. H. Kamuzu Banda, was a Chewa. Identity. The Chewa are Negroid people of average size. In the past, the women scarified themselves, but this is now seldom done. As Malawi is 85 % rural, most of the Chewa people live in the many villages of Malawi. Language. The Chewa language uses the Roman alphabet and is closely related to other Bantu languages. The language is not only spoken in Malawi, but its use spills over into the bordering countries of Zambia, Tanzania, and Mozambique. Chichewa and English were made the official languages of Malawi in 1968. Political situation.

67. Lomwe
Smaller numbers are scattered throughout the southern region of malawi. history. The Lomwe are originally from what is now Mozambique to the east of malawi.
http://www.imb.org/southern-africa/peoplegroups/lomwe.htm
The Lomwe of Malawi Location. The Lomwe are one of the four largest ethnic groups living in Malawi. They are located primarily in the southeast section of Malawi with the largest concentration being in Mulanje district. Others live in Thyolo, Chiradzulu, Zomba, and Liwonde. Smaller numbers are scattered throughout the southern region of Malawi. History. The Lomwe are originally from what is now Mozambique to the east of Malawi. Even more Lomwe continue to live in Mozambique than in Malawi. However, the migration of large numbers of Lomwe to Malawi had already taken place before the missionaries, white traders, and colonialists arrived in the latter part of the nineteenth century. There was a large influx of Lomwe into Malawi in the 1930's because of tribal wars in Mozambique. Identity. The Lomwe are Bantu people of the Negroid race as are most of the people of southeastern Africa. In the past the women made distinc-tive scarification marks on their cheeks, but this custom is dying out. The Lomwe are a rural people with only 5-10% living in urban areas. They are primarily subsistence farmers. Many of them love to hunt though wild game is scarce.

CHITUKUKO CHA AMAI m'MALAWI
WOMEN IN DEVELOPMENT IN MALAWI
by Paula Rae Brody
Chitukuko Cha Amai m'Malawi (CCAM) was founded in August of 1985 to focus on the recognition of "Women in Development in Malawi". The foundation laid by the League of Malawi Women, and the ongoing stewardship of the National Commission on Women in Development (NCWID) in the Ministry of Community Services, provided the impelling stimulus for CCAM's emergence as a non-governmental organisation. CCAM was founded to directly express with a unified voice, the concerns, needs, rights and opportunities of women. CCAM's mission was to consolidate the role of women and to facilitate their full integration into development activities, including relief and charity work, while placing special emphasis on rural women, their needs and the building of self-esteem. CCAM donates food to flood victims at Phokera in Nsanje Malawi in 1985 was a single party system of government. This provided CCAM with an opportunity to take advantage of its incorporation under the League of Malawi Women, and its affiliation to the National Commission on Women in Development, to ask the best and most experienced individuals in the country to provide educational guidance to the women. Government, independent business people and donors reacted favourably to the request. The rural areas, in which ninety percent of the population resided, were encouraged to utilise this opportunity to realise their incorporation into the mainstream of development. Their needs would be identified, and decisions made at village level would be stated by grassroot leadership.

History Introduction Administration News ... AHILA 9th Congress: AHILA Malawi Chapter is pleased to announce that Malawi will host AHILA 9 in October 2004. 1st Call for Abstracts: College of Medicine Eighth Research Dissemination Conference. Admissions to MBBS Programme: Details on admission into the MBBS Programme can be found here. home history
The College was opened in 1991 as a fifth constituent of the federal set up of the University of Malawi.
Initially the students who attended the college were Malawians who, after doing very well in their Biology, Chemistry and a third science subject at the end of A levels, second year of a Bachelor of Science programme and indeed at the end of a B.Sc. degree, were sent to the United Kingdom, Australia and South Africa to do their preclinical studies whilst the college was being constructed and as staff to run it were being recruited. The arrangement at that time was that after completing their three year preclinical phase abroad, the remaining two years of their programme would be done here. This would ensure that they would be properly grounded in clinical conditions peculiar to Malawi in particular and to the Southern African Region in general.
The first group to return from abroad arrived in Malawi when it had already done four years of medical school because the College was not yet ready to receive them after their three years of preclinical studies. However, subsequent groups fitted within the original plan. The current fifth year which will be graduating this year will be the third group to have received all its medical education in Malawi. The last batch of those who did their preclinical studies abroad graduated in July of 1988.

    Promotion of humanitarian law
In Botswana, the ICRC and the Federation carried out a joint mission to the National Society to help it resume its activities.
In Malawi, the situation remained relatively calm during the year, despite some tension within the governing coalition which led to the withdrawal of one of the constituent parties, depriving the President's party of its parliamentary majority. The ICRC supervised the construction of a hospital ward at Zomba prison to provide medical care for the detainees and completed the installation of new kitchens in the country's two largest prisons. Since the completion in 1995 [12] of its programme of visits to Malawi's prisons to examine the material and psychological conditions of detention, the ICRC had sought to ensure, by drawing attention to their situation, that its work in aid of the detainees there would be continued. These efforts bore fruit and in 1996 an organization, Penal Reform International, stepped in on their behalf.
    Cooperation with the National Societies
In October 1996, Mozambique celebrated the second anniversary of peace and democracy in the country. Earlier in the year, in June, the ICRC had signed a three-year cooperation agreement with the National Society to help it to work in a peacetime environment. It was the first agreement of this kind to be concluded in the region.

The countries covered by the Harare regional delegation enjoyed a period of relative political and social stability in 1997, although tensions surfaced at the end of the year in Zambia and Zimbabwe and living conditions remained difficult for many people in the region. In addition, the effects of the AIDS epidemic were very strongly felt in this part of southern Africa.
    Cooperation with the National Societies
This year again, the ICRC concentrated on cooperation with the region's National Societies. By means of financial and material support, training courses and practical advice, the organization helped most of these Societies to become autonomous in their work aimed at restoring and maintaining family links. In most of the region's countries, in cooperation with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, it also organized first-aid courses for volunteers and emergency-preparedness seminars for the senior staff of the National Societies. Moreover, the regional delegation helped the Societies to improve their media profile in their respective countries and facilitated contact between them.
Seminars for the armed forces and the police
In October the regional delegation had a favourable initial interview with the commander-in-chief of the armed forces of Botswana regarding the development of activities to promote humanitarian law in that country.

AMECEA (then ITEBEA) was the brainchild of the Catholic Bishops of Tanganyika (today's Tanzania). In 1960 they proposed, through the then Apostolic Delegation (today's Nunciature) in Nairobi, that there be collaboration among Catholic Bishops in the region. That time the following countries were under the Nairobi Apostolic Delegation namely Kenya, Nyasaland (today's Malawi), Uganda, Sudan, Tanganyika and Northern Rhodesia (today's Zambia). When these other Bishops' Conferences agreed to the necessity of working together, the then Apostolic Delegate (today's Nuncio) Monsignor Guido Del Mestri consulted Rome. Rome gave its approval. REASONS FOR SOLIDARITY
There were at that time winds of change in both the Church and society in this region.
