"Though times are changing in Malawi, one thing that I have noticed that hasn't changed much is counselling. During the course of her work with the SOS youths, Wekha has gained plenty of experience in counselling, but she still feels that the 'old fashioned' ways embedded in Malawian culture have a thing or two to recommend them. She explains her feelings on the matter. "Though times are changing in Malawi, one thing that I have noticed that hasn't changed much is counselling.

CULTURE-MALAWI: Young Women Leaders Rise Up To Challenges Inter Press Service - July 9, 2003
Frank Phiri BLANTYRE, 9 Jul (IPS) Faced with high prevalence of HIV/AIDS infection, environmental degradation and sluggish economic growth, young women professionals in Malawi have put their heads together and intensified efforts to bring about a major paradigm shift. The women, under a grouping called the Young Women Leaders Network (YWLN), want to put fellow women in the fore of developing this impoverished southern African state of 10 million people, of which women make up 50 percent. The young women professionals say they draw their inspiration from the various socio-economic and development woes that afflict the country resulting in women becoming the most vulnerable group. "We realised that all our problems were similar and sought to form a common front to confront these problems," Evelyn Mwapasa, chairperson of YWLN told IPS in the commercial capital, Blantyre. True to Mwapasa's assertions, Malawi's demographics are not positive. Various local and international institutions, among them the World Bank, place 65 per cent of the total Malawi population to be living below the one United States dollar a day threshold.

News - Africa In Internet Nordiska Afrikainstitutet «Increasingly senile» Ex-President Hastings Banda afrol News, 19 November - Leading scholars have united to publish a new review of Malawi's short and troubled history of multi-party democracy. They find a true transformation since the Banda dictatorship, but they also warn that "intimidation and tolerance, old and new, exist side by side in Malawi's political pluralism." Editor Harri Englund asks the question: "Is there a culture of politics beyond mere greed?" in the introduction of the just released book, 'A Democracy of Chameleons - Politics and Culture in the New Malawi'. While some chapters underline the new freedoms and the political will to solve the country's profound structural problems, others focus on the maintainace of structures and persons from the defeated dictatorship. There are no clear answers. This 187-pages review of Malawi's recent history is published by the Nordic Africa Institute, edited by Finnish researcher Harri Englund. A new generation of scholars, most of them Malawians, cover a large range of issues causing debate in the so-called 'New Malawi'. The origin of the book can be traced to the International Conference on Historical and Social Science Research in Malawi, held at Chancellor College in Zomba in June 2000.

Part I: Child Rights Versus Culture
News Analysis
By George Kayange
Cridoc Project Director
17 October 2003 The IRIN News report of the July 28 edition that famine was responsible for the re-emergence of a custom, which sees families forcing young daughters into relationships with older men in order to pay off debts in a Southern African country, Malawi, is by all standards reprehensible. The article based on the Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) report claiming the practice of "kupimbira," which allows a poor family to approach a rich man for a loan of cattle or money in exchange for their daughter regardless of her age, has resurfaced over the past two years. It said the development comes in the wake of the “devastating hunger that has ravaged the areas" in the north of a country that is among the world's poorest nations, with about 65 percent of the population living in abject poverty, or on less than US $1 a day. The article further said the author of the MHRC report, the commission's principal investigations officer, Harry Kambwembwe, conducted an inquiry into the practice following a letter to the commission from a concerned citizen. The letter "singled out a particular case in which a young girl of 13 years was forced by her parents to marry an elderly man in repayment of K4, 000 [about $45] which the parents owed the man," the report said.

SOUTHERN AFRICA SOJOURN
An exploration of many of the countries of Southern Africa will lift your heart with their models of progressive social policy, peace and cooperation. Two thousand years ago southern Africa was inhabited by the hunter-gather 'San' people who left an extraordinary record of their life painted on the walls of caves. Around the eleventh century Bantu-speaking people migrated into the area and began developing the civilization that built the 'Great Zimbabwe', that still stands strong. Today, the region is noteworthy for its democracies, 'agricultural miracles', environmental awareness, material and musical culture. Their primary education, women's development and rural health care delivery are recognized as well. It is a region of pride and optimism. Visitors exclaim about the thousands of miles of paved roads, many moods of the Zambezi River, breathtaking Victoria Falls, enchanting 'kopjes', flourishing wildlife, intriguing traditional rock art, powerful Great Zimbabwe Ruins, extraordinary modern stone sculpture and excellent museums. But for those who also stopped away from the tourist areas, as great as the sites are, their greatest memories are of the people they met and the friends they made. The primary season for these programs is June-September. Itineraries may vary between
