Blantyre - Culture M alawi's largest city, Blantyre is situated in the Southern Region and includes the two communities of Blantyre and Limbe which are joined by an eight kilometre stretch of highway. Blantyre, Malawi's oldest municipality is the country's main commercial, industrial and communications hub and is set in the Shire Highlands. The city is surrounded by some of the most beautiful hills and mountains in Malawi. A typical view from a city street could include Michiru, the rain mountain, a glimpse of Mount Soche or a passing glance of Ndirande, sleeping man mountain, looming behind a suburb. The hills which surround the City are in fact the first layer of an echo of hills which stretch to the Kirk Range, the Zomba Plateau and Mount Mulanje. Blantyre's hills all have something special to offer. Most have patches of evergreen forest, wild orchids, aloes and numerous birds and always incredible views. Perhaps the most interesting is Michiru with its Mountain Conservation Area. The Michiru Mountain is in fact an ongoing experiment in conservation where emphasis is placed on demonstrating wise land use. The Conservation Area has been divided into three sections, a forestry reserve, farming area and nature reserve for the improvement of natural resources. Visitors to the area can drive to the summit to enjoy spectacular views of Blantyre itself, Zomba, Mulanje and the Shire Valley.

Lilongwe - Culture Lilongwe the capital city of Malawi is faced by a myriad of problems. The drainage system is in a mess, financial mismanagement and ignorance in planning, corruption is rife, the roads which were upgraded recently are unpleasant. The government is now acting to get rid of all these challenges. Malawi's drainage system in the Capital Lilongwe is in a blink of collapse. It is actually missing. All what one sees is a group of vendors lined up along the street to the bus depot. The drain which was previously seen during the rainy season is now covered with sand and stones. Today, the drain is a harbour of vendors who sell items from second-hand clothing to roasting meat along the road. Tea drinking is one of the popular activities currently taking place in the missing drain. In order to cover the potholes, the State President Dr. Bakili Muluzi responded by awarding the Council about MK3 million for road maintenance. It took time for the council to start repairing the road until the State President paid a surprise visit to the council. The President's visit led to the dismissal of the City's Chief Executive and City Engineer. The council now has a new Acting Chief Executive and almost all roads have been repaired. Solving the problem of the missing drain in the capital Lilongwe still remains a mystery unless all the surrounding issues are tackled by all concerned authorities namely the National Environmental council, Lilongwe City Council and the vendors. Of course, the vendors are trying to capitalise on the liberalising market economy currently being pursued by the Malawi Government under the guidance of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank.

Malawi is one of the smaller African Nations, landlocked in the heart of east-central Africa and is one-fifth water. Dominated by the Rift Valley, the country includes an extensive area of high interior plateaus with steep escarpments, found to be plunging in places into the waters of Lake Malawi. The Lake environment offers the opportunity to forget about the hurried passing of time, as it is still relatively untouched by the modern world. Things to do
Scuba-diving The lake conditions are generally very calm with water temperatures between 22-27degrees Celcius and visibilities up to 30 m during most of the year. It is estimated that there are over 500 fish species from 10 families with cichlids as the dominant species. Most cichlids have a remarkable breeding trait, the female carry their eggs and fry in their mouth until the young are ready and able to look after their own needs. No wonder that Lake Malawi is sometimes referred to as

Malawian artists who have achieved recognition for their work inside the country and abroad include Kay Chirombo Willie Nampeya Cuthy Mede Charley Bakari and Louis Dimpwa . Between them they represent various media, producing carvings in stone and wood, batiks and paintings. Some critics and commentators have discussed the evolution of a distinct Malawian style or ‘school’ but other parts of Africa have precluded this.
Of the painters and sculptors inside Malawi, Cuthy Mede is possibly the best known, especially since he gave up his lecturing job to open Galerie Africaine in Lilongwe, the first high-profile art gallery of the country. Many of the works on display and for sale are his own, but some are by other local artists. He is also actively involved in the development and promotion of Malawian art within the country and around the world.

Culture The African peoples in Malawi are all of Bantu origin. The main ethnic groups ('tribes') are the Chewa, dominant in the central and southern parts of the country; the Yao, also found in the south; and the Tumbuka in the north. There are very small populations of Asian and European people living mainly in the cities. The different ethnic groups in Malawi each have their own language or dialect. The Chewa are the dominant group and their language, called Chewa or Chichewa, is the common national tongue widely used throughout the country. English is the official language and is very widely spoken, particularly in main towns, but sometimes also in remote rural areas. Of the other languages spoken in Malawi, Tumbuka is spoken by about 500,000 people in the north, and Yao is spoken by about 600,000 people in the south. Most people in Malawi are Christian, usually members of one of the Protestant churches founded by missionaries in the late 19th century. There are Muslims in the north, especially along Lake Malawi - a legacy of the Arab slave traders who operated in this area. Alongside the established religions, many Malawians also hold traditional animist beliefs. Malawian artists who have achieved recognition for their work inside the country and abroad include Cuthy Mede (probably the best known), Kay Chirombo, Willie Nampeya and Louis Dimpwa. They work in various media, producing carvings in stone and wood, batiks and paintings.
