Culture
The African peoples in Malawi are all of Bantu origin. The main ethnic groups ('tribes') are the Chewa, dominant in the central and southern parts of the country; the Yao, also found in the south; and the Tumbuka in the north. There are very small populations of Asian and European people living mainly in the cities. The different ethnic groups in Malawi each have their own language or dialect. The Chewa are the dominant group and their language, called Chewa or Chichewa, is the common national tongue widely used throughout the country. English is the official language and is very widely spoken, particularly in main towns, but sometimes also in remote rural areas. Of the other languages spoken in Malawi, Tumbuka is spoken by about 500,000 people in the north, and Yao is spoken by about 600,000 people in the south. Most people in Malawi are Christian, usually members of one of the Protestant churches founded by missionaries in the late 19th century. There are Muslims in the north, especially along Lake Malawi - a legacy of the Arab slave traders who operated in this area. Alongside the established religions, many Malawians also hold traditional animist beliefs. Malawian artists who have achieved recognition for their work inside the country and abroad include Cuthy Mede (probably the best known), Kay Chirombo, Willie Nampeya and Louis Dimpwa. They work in various media, producing carvings in stone and wood, batiks and paintings.

  • Brush up on the country's past with BR Rafael's A Short History of Malawi If you think impalas are just cars, pick up Jonathan Kingdon's Field Guide to African Mammals Anyone planning to spot some of Malawi's many feathered friends will want Robert's Birds of Southern Africa , by Gordon Lindsay - though Newman's Birds of Southern Africa and Newman's Malawi Supplement , by Kenneth Newman, are more portable. Malawi Wildlife, Parks and Reserves , by Judy Carter, is concise and informative, though larger and harder to find than , by John Hough. Tim Jeal's Livingstone is one of the best books on the Scottish missionary. Two excellent guides, locally produced, are Day Outings from Lilongwe and Day Outings from Blantyre The Traveller's Literary Companion to Africa , edited by Oona Strathern, is the best place to start reading Malawian writers. South African writer Laurens van der Post's novel Venture to the Interior has good descriptions of the workings of the British colonial administration. Paul Theroux's Jungle Lovers is a light and humourous take on 1960s Malawi culture and politics - not light enough for dictatorial leader Hastings Banda, though, who later banned the author.

Malawi Time and Date Malawi Culture Back to Top Though under the impact of modernization, Malawi's traditional culture is characterized by continuity as well as change, and the traditional life of the village has remained largely intact. One of the most distinctive features of Malawi culture is the enormous variety of traditional songs and dances that use the drum as the major musical instrument. Among the most notable of these dances are ingoma and gule wa mkulu for men and chimtali and visekese for women. There are various traditional arts and crafts, including sculpture in wood and ivory. There are two museums—the Museum of Malawi in Blantyre and a smaller one in Mangochi. While various cultural activities are organized by the Ministry of Youth and Culture, the University of Malawi Travelling Theatre, and other groups in Blantyre, the radio from Zomba and Lilongwe has proved to be the most effective means of bringing traditional and modern plays to the rural population.

Malawi History
Long inhabited by Bantu-speaking peoples, Malawi enjoyed relative calm and isolation from the outside world until the early 1800s, when Arab slave traders swooped in and carried away many of its residents. Europeans - except for some wandering Portuguese merchants - didn't pay much attention to Malawi until 1859. That was the year Dr. David Livingstone (of "Dr. Livingstone, I presume?" fame) visited and reported that the residents called the country Nyasaland, or "Land of the Lake." Nyasaland was colonized by Great Britain in 1883 and remained under British control until 1964, when it gained its independence. The country's name was changed to Malawi, which means "reflected light of bright haze." For the first three decades of its existence, Malawi was ruled by the aged despot Dr. Hastings Banda, best known for intransigent and idiosyncratic policies such as banning short skirts on women and hair below the collar on men and recognizing apartheid South Africa. A referendum in 1993 ended one-party rule, and in elections the following year Dr. Banda was voted out of office. His death in 1997 (at age 99) marked the the end of an era. Today, Malawi is a poor and crowded country that relishes political freedom but is struggling to recover from economic mismanagement, rising crime and severe droughts.

Malawi is a landlocked country in East Africa — not on the coast of West Africa as stated. One of the reasons I am writing this letter is because another student from Innerleithen (Sarah) is travelling to Malawi in June to work in Ekwendeni Hospital. In the early 1990s I spent three years in Ekwendeni Hospital. This is a well- respected Malawi hospital and recognised as an excellent training school for nurses. The incident described in last week’s report regarding needles on the floor, etc., is something I did not ever encounter while working there. It is certainly not normal practice in this hospital. Both the matron and the assistant matron are two of the best and most-competent nurses I have ever worked with. The article also mentions patients lying on the floor. There are two reasons why this is so:

1.1 GENERAL
The Malawi Government has adopted Poverty Alleviation as the central policy for national development. The strategy aims at reducing and, eventually, eliminating, poverty in Malawi. This strategy is enshrined in the Poverty Alleviation Programme (PAP) and the recently launched Vision 2020. It has been established that a great proportion of those affected by poverty are women. Generally it is also established that women's poverty is exacerbated by their lack of access to the productive resources of land, income, credit, appropriate technologies and information. The UN Joint Gender Policy Statement is a conscious way of addressing the existing gender imbalance, recognising the potential of women and legitimising their contribution to national development.
1.2 CURRENT SITUATION OF WOMEN AND GENDER IN MALAWI Previous analyses on the social situation of women in Malawi have revealed that women are seriously disadvantaged in almost every sector of development.

Finding a Window of Opportunity
By Yamiko Samu
I was born at midday on the fifth day of the ninth month, 24 years ago in Zomba Malawi's former capital city into a Christian family. It is important for me to say that because belief in, and fear of, evil spirits is an integral part of Malawi culture. Like my parents, many Malawians find themselves constantly torn between the fear of witchcraft, their belief in Christ, and concern for their families' welfare.
Growing up in Malawi means a daily confrontation with poverty. It can cause you to become either immune to it, or transformed by it into a hungry being lusting for success.
Success had always been my goal and I was prepared to go to extreme lengths to attain it. However, while I was at university I came to realize that it was not only my success that mattered, but the success of others, too. Yet how could I, a teen-ager at the time, seek success and prosperity on behalf of my nation and the whole of humanity? What could I do?
I felt small and insignificant. Somewhere in my thoughts however, as a bright light illuminates a dark night for the briefest of moments, came the truth that I was significant that without my "piece," the jigsaw puzzle would be incomplete.
During my junior year at college, a group of fellow Christian students from the university's Baptist Union of Students raised the necessary funds and built a Habitat house alongside a family in need during the school's Easter break. I went along for the fun of it, was my thinking. But God revealed to me a different thought: At last I had made a difference. I had sought success and prosperity for humanity and found it could be done, a small step at a time.
