Malaria rising as DDT use falls, scientist says
WASHINGTON (Reuters) Malaria rates are climbing in poor countries that have stopped using the pesticide DDT to control the deadly disease, a tropical diseases expert warned on Tuesday. Donald Roberts, speaking for a coalition that is promoting DDT as a means of controlling malaria in developing countries, said the chemical was safe if sprayed in small amounts inside homes to repel mosquitoes that carry the parasite which causes malaria.

Report: Fort Bragg killings, malaria drug not linked
Story Tools WASHINGTON (CNN) Military investigators have found no evidence that the anti-malarial drug Lariam was a contributing factor in the killings of four Army wives, allegedly by their husbands, U.S. Defense Department sources Wednesday told CNN. The Army plans to release next week results of an investigation of the circumstances surrounding the deaths of the women, whose husbands were based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. In three of the deaths, the men accused had recently returned from Afghanistan. Questions had been raised about whether side effects of Lariam, which has been administered to the military for duty in Afghanistan, had contributed to violent behavior. The drug is known chemically as mefloquine hydrochloride. Roche Laboratories, the drug's manufacturer, acknowledges the substance may cause mental disturbances ranging from anxiety to psychotic behavior. A Web site medical brochure warns against the use of the drug by patients "with a recent history of depression, generalized anxiety disorder, psychosis, or schizophrenia or other major psychiatric disorders."

Relapsing Malaria
Symptoms may develop many months after travel
Although uncommon, it is possible to develop a relapsing type of malaria months to even years after traveling to a malaria infected country, even if you were taking the appropriate malaria medications to prevent the illness. Any returning traveler who develops a fever that lasts more than a few days requires prompt medical attention to screen for a malaria infection. While malaria medications such as chloroquine, doxycycline, or mefloquine (Lariam) can prevent symptoms of acute malaria from developing by suppressing the infection in the bloodstream, they do not prevent relapses of infection caused by certain strains of the parasite that have a persistent liver phase. Fortunately, the most common type of malaria is the

Malaria control tops U.S., world concerns
From staff and wire reports (CNN) U.S. lawmakers have agreed to help fight the worldwide spread of the devastating mosquito-borne illness malaria. The measure was made official this week as President Clinton signed a bill called the International Malaria Control Act. The legislation, signed Wednesday, authorizes $50 million for the U.S. fiscal year 2001 and fiscal year 2002 to prevent and treat malaria in the developing world.

Malaria

Current Views on Malaria Prophylaxis
A Review Article
Dr Arlene Goldman MB.BCh. MRCP(UK) MACP
The development of resistance to familiar anti-malarials has created confusion both for Doctors and travellers as to what is the best and most effective anti-malarial to take and which areas of the World require special precautions. Further difficulties are created by the serious side-effects encountered on using the newer drugs. This review will endeavour to elucidate current areas of resistance and recommendations for prophylaxis and treatment. Great stress is given to the warning that no prophylaxis is foolproof and failures arise most commonly from not taking the drugs as prescribed. In particular they must be started 1 week before departure and continued for 4-6 weeks after leaving the malaria area. Any fever up to 12-18months after leaving a malaria area should arouse suspicion of malaria and be investigated accordingly. Appropriate advice must be sought prior to departure from a reputable travel advice centre. Antimalarial drugs
