Her early life of beatings, rape and abuse is not uncommon for a woman from the low caste in India. What made her life different was her willingness to fight back. She formed a gang of bandits and took violent revenge on her abusers. After Phoolan Devi negotiated her own surrender, police were forced to tread carefully lest the oppressed react in her support. Not formally charged, Devi spent 11 years in jail and was released only last year. The makers of this film follow Phoolan Devi to her village, interview her family and gang members, and visit her jail, where she recounts her tragic and heroic life. SBS, Friday, August 25, 8.30pm. Art and Survival
The power of African Art can never be put into words, just as music cannot be translated. And, like music, beauty is not always the goal..it is a creation of the imagination, born of forces out of time and space, and thus unknowable..

    Mask. Lwena. Angola.
    I call this mask my "Alien Angel," and I got it from Africa Direct. Up until the last few years, Angola was without doubt one of the most dangerous places on earth, with civil wars raging all across the country. In 1992, Angola underwent a transition from a one-party socialist state to a nominally multi-party democracy. Current problems are the repatriation of thousands of refugees, the breakdown of medical services (they are simply overwhelmed..), and the huge number of land mines which still await safe disposal. The little mask, with its ethereal beauty, was carved amidst this chaos, and implies optimism and hope.... The Rennies Wetlands Project, under the auspices of the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa is the only national initiative looking after wetlands in South Africa. Worldwide wetlands are threatened by:
* wetland drainage and cropping
* timber production
* overgrazing
* overharvesting of plants * poorly managed burning * the building of dams * mining and industrial pollution * urbanisation. According to David Lindley, South Africa needs to: * Develop a holistic South African Wetlands Conservation Act.

This November, the British Museum will host a showcase of contemporary art from Southern Africa. The exhibition has been conceived in collaboration with the Gasworks Studio and the Triangle Arts Trust and brings together the work of nine artists: six from South Africa, two from Zimbabwe and one from Mozambique. The works on display have been produced since the mid-80s to the present, marking a period of intense socio-political struggle, transition and transformation in the region. Mozambique gained independence from Portuguese colonialism in 1975 and played an important role in the fall of (then)Rhodesia's white minority government in 1980. South Africa held its first democratic elections in 1994, following decades of resistance to the apartheid regime. However, all three countries have since experienced internal strife and the path to independence has been far from smooth. The artwork crosses the boundaries between rural and urban, local and global, defying attempts to easily categorise the continent into cohesive styles and traditions. If they cohere, they do so in momentary flashes, in the overlap of competing histories, politics and market places and in the everyday contact between individuals. Each work may be approached as a glimpse into the biography of individuals, communities and even nations.

Address at the Opening of the Tourism Indaba
4 May 2003 Chairperson,
Honourable Ministers,
Directors-General,
Chief Executive Officers of various stakeholders in the Tourism Industry,
Members of the International and local Media,
Delegates, both from home and abroad,
Ladies and Gentlemen: I am happy to welcome everyone to this important event. I am privileged to spend a little bit of time with the men and women who lead and participate in this important sector of human activity and business - tourism. A special word of welcome goes to many among us who constitute the small, medium and micro enterprises in this important industry, the majority of whom are attending this event for the first time. Obviously, you know more about this industry than I do. I am certain you know all the statistics that relate to this sector, the challenges it faces and the opportunities, both locally and globally. Being business people, I am certain you have the obligation to respect the discipline of the market or face collapse as commercial ventures. Even the Ministers and the senior government officials who are here, are expected by their bosses, such as the President of South Africa, to know their sectors well enough to be able properly to discharge their responsibilities.
