Ecology Education
on the Southern Coast of Maine
What Programs Does Ferry Beach Provide?
Ferry Beach Ecology School (FBES) is a non-profit educational organization dedicated to providing ecological education to 3rd-8th grade classes. Our interdisciplinary ecology curriculum focuses on teaching hands-on lessons in basic ecology by using the outdoors as a classroom a classroom where learning occurs through exploration, scientific investigation, discovery and sensory awareness. FBES naturalists take students to a variety of ecosystems residential programs , as well as day programs and outreach programs to public and private schools. Why Do Classes Come to Ferry Beach? A trip to FBES can be a once in a lifetime opportunity for students to explore and learn about ecosystems such as tidepools, beaches, dunes, salt marshes and coastal forests- places that many of them may never have seen before. The experience of being away from home and learning to live with and get along with others is also invaluable. School teachers from all over New England use this experience as an integral part of their science curriculum. Pre-visit and post-visit activity manuals as well as free teacher training during your visit to Ferry Beach Ecology School help to ensure that the week can be incorporated into the regular school year.

The Boatbuilding Program provides intensive, handson vocational training in both TheLanding School 286 River Road, Arundel, maine 04046 Mailing Address
http://www.landingschool.org/ls_aboutus.html
The Landing School of Boatbuilding and Design was established in 1978 as a nonprofit, post-secondary institution dedicated to providing the highest quality vocational education in boatbuilding. In 1979, the Design Program was added to fill a need in the marine industry for a source of new designers trained specifically in the techniques and aesthetics of yacht and commercial boat design. Enrolling its first class in September of 1999, the Marine Systems Technician Program was created to meet the heavy industry demand for workers trained in this field. Our students have come from all over the United States, as well as from Canada, South America, Europe, Asia, Australia and Africa. Graduates of our programs are now employed in the marine industry all over the world as professional designers, builders, systems technicians and repairers. Some go into related fields such as sail making, spar design, and yacht sales. Many have even started their own boat shops and design offices. The school's ability to reinforce and preserve traditional skills and knowledge while advancing the builder's and designer's art through the integration of modern techniques and contemporary materials is recognized and valued throughout the marine industry. The Landing School enjoys an international reputation for program quality and, as an educational institution, is considered by many in the marine industry to be unequaled.

"We just finished difficult reduction in a lot of our programs. Not paying for people´s dentures, and then to pay for laptops, is a problem," said Douglass, D-Auburn, referring to cuts in Medicaid payments. "It would be really hard to adjust to not having laptops," said Eliza Bryant, a student at Freeport Middle School. "We´ve had them for two years. People have started taking them for granted." After that, she has proposed a cost-sharing formula in which the state would pick up 55 percent of the tab. Local school districts would have to pay the remaining 45 percent to participate as the program expanded over the following three years to include 10th, 11th and 12th graders. Gendron said the Education Department already has begun negotiations with Apple, which provided the iBooks to middle schools. She envisions a similar four-year contract for high schools that would work out to $300 per student per year. That figure includes insurance, wireless networks, support and professional development.

Press Release
Two Washington County Schools to Partner with Sea Coast Mission "EdGE" Education Program
(Cherryfield, July 1, 2002) The Maine Sea Coast Mission announced today that 32 students from two S.A.D. 37 schools, Harrington Elementary and D.W. Merritt in Addison, will participate in the Mission's new EdGE program beginning this summer. The program is a multi-site, after-school and summer program for students in grades five through eight.
Under the supervision of Project Director Charles Harrington, EdGE staff will work during and after school with students, families and schools to put children on a path to high school, college or vocational school. Activities include experiential education, integrated use of technology, individualized educational assistance, and hands-on learning combined with outdoor adventures.
The EdGE program (which stands for Ed Greaves Education) is named after Edward S. Greaves, a former president of the Sea Coast Mission who passed away last July. Mr. Greaves was a resident of Addison and a passionate advocate for Washington County youth. The program is sponsored by the Sea Coast Mission and was made possible by a major grant made in honor of Mr. Greaves by a former college classmate.
The 97-year old Sea Coast Mission is a non-denominational, nonprofit organization providing compassionate outreach to residents of island and mainland communities along the Maine coast. Programs and services include emergency assistance, health care, recycled clothing shop, food pantry, educational programs, pastoral services, support for small churches, and more.
