Each year, MSSM seniors complete a Senior Survey which helps the college advisor guage their experience with the college application process. Below we've included some of their comments and ratings.
School characteristic importance
MSSM seniors, in the Senior Survey 2002, were asked to rate how important each of the following items was in their college search. We've provided the average rating for each category. In making your college choice, how important were the following? Not at all Extremely Financial aid X

Here are some of the more helpful comments that last year's seniors provided us: What do you wish you had done differently in the college application process? "Started early in junior year to look, visit, consider. Begin telling juniors right away that they need to start searching because it's a hard choice. Decide where you want to be, what size, and some general programs and go from there! I tried to do this, anyway! I had a broad range though. VISIT your schools before sending in application fees!" "Really gotten to know about more colleges, and known about [my first choice] better before going to the April Open House (although I wasn't at all disappointed)."

NANCY JACOBSON, OF THE NEWS STAFF
Last updated: Wednesday, July 30, 2003 Pre-kindergarten programs on rise in Maine schools
Teachers: Children learn social skills Pupils in Maine are getting younger these days. The number of pre-kindergarten programs in public schools has increased markedly in recent years. Five years ago there were 27 programs designed to give 4-year-olds an early start on their school careers statewide. Last year there were 78 programs, and a consultant at the Maine Department of Education said she gets three to four calls a week from school officials asking for information or an application for a new program. Despite the rapid growth of pre-K programs, educators admit it is difficult to measure their educational value and cost-effectiveness. Anecdotal evidence suggests children who participate adapt better to kindergarten and pupils with special needs are identified earlier. Easier to measure is that in some cases adding 4-year-old pupils adds state funding to school budgets.

General Information
Penobscot School is a small non-profit language school in Rockland, Maine. We offer courses in English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Russian, Spanish and other language to adults and children in our community. Participants in these courses take a special interest in meeting and helping the students who come from around the world for the Summer English Program. Rockland, Maine, is a fishing port of 8,000 inhabitants in a part of the New England coast that is famous as a summer resort. The school is a short walk from museums, shops, and restaurants, and is close to boating, swimming, fishing, golf, tennis, and shore and forest nature walks. The area has a lively cultural scene in the summer and is home to numerous art galleries, a museum of automobiles and airplanes, as well as schools of photography, wilderness survival and boatbuilding. The goal of the Summer English Program is maximum English acquisition. We believe that students learn best when relaxed, comfortable, and highly interested in the subject. The human brain is designed for language learning and with proper stimulation can make extremely rapid progress. The course provides a rich bath of language which the students absorb through listening and active participation.
