Welcome to Maine's first charter school!
The Maine School of Science and Mathematics is a public, residential charter school whose main purpose is to offer a high-caliber education to Maine high school students. Across all subject areas, the academics are intended to provide students with topics of a high standard of interest and difficulty, taught by teachers having significant proficiency in their subjects. Understandably, the school has been popularly known as a "magnet school," for our students and faculty choose us . In addition to the academics, the students develop close bonds in the school's dormitory, learning to live together in a boarding environment and to resolve social differences. Fortunately, an MSSM education is far more affordable than most boarding and private schools for Maine students just over $3000 a year! Through generous state funding, the tuition portion of the approximately $18,000 education we provide is wholly covered. Interesting?

    ELLSWORTH SCHOOL REPORTS

Superintendent's Annual Report to the City 2003
This past year, the Ellsworth School Department has been heavily influenced by outside pressures. State and Federal changes imposed on public education are the most severe I have witnessed in my thirty-four years in public education. The development of the Learning Results, standards based education, and the new federal No Child Left Behind Act are creating operational and educational challenges that are at times overwhelming.
Before you declare me a professional whiner, please keep in mind that it is not the purpose or reason for the mandates that concern us. Rather it is the amount and intensity of the new directives that seem more than a local education department can bear. Generally the “new trends” are good for students and education. However, change usually takes time and resources, both of which are in short supply. Coupled with a lack of State and Federal funding, education across the State is on the verge of experiencing a major meltdown. We are fortunate that school employees are motivated by their desire to teach children because currently the pressure of the initiatives are at a level at which some staff would choose to leave the profession. For the last year I, as your Superintendent, have seriously tried to remain positive as we continue to attempt to comply with the mandates.
On a much more positive note the Ellsworth School Department, in spite of the pressures of State and Federal requirements, has experienced a wonderful year as we continue to grow and improve. Increases in tuitioned students, restructuring and new educational programs, a number of very helpful grants, and a great employee attitude in support of our educational mission greatly overshadow the many challenges.

Parents Cite Religious Bias In Maine School-Choice Lawsuit
    By Robert B. Bluey
    CNSNews.com Staff Writer
October 22, 2002 (CNSNews.com) - Two groups of Maine parents, using different tactics but hoping for the same results, are suing the state education department over its school-choice program. The parents want the Maine program declared unconstitutional in the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling on school vouchers. The lawsuits the first since the court's June decision claim Maine is discriminating against religious schools by restricting their participation in the state's school-choice program. Two of the parents, whose children attend St. Dominic's Regional High School in Auburn, Maine, filed the suit in federal court Friday with the help of the American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ). It comes a month after the Institute for Justice brought a suit in state court on behalf of six families with children in private religious schools in Maine. "The Supreme Court made it clear that religious schools must be treated in the same manner as other schools with respect to tuition funding," said Vincent McCarthy, an ACLJ attorney who is representing the parents.

Report of the Superintendent of Schools
The 2003-2004 school year will be highlighted by the completion of the Facilities Master Plan which first began in 1996. The end of this seven year journey will find Yarmouth students enjoying the benefit of a new Rowe School, an addition to the Yarmouth Elementary School library, and the complete renovation of Yarmouth High School which includes a new auditorium, library, student union, and science labs. We appreciate the confidence and support that the citizens of Yarmouth displayed in passing the referendum of June of 2001 and again at Town Meeting in June of 2003.
Though the construction activities of the past two years have been monumental, we remain focused on our annual commitment to improve our schools. Each year we select specific goals to improve teaching and learning. The School Committee in collaboration with our leadership teams established the following school improvement goals that guide our work during the 2003-2004 school year.
