Maine Learning Results and the Media Center
The following document is the Waterville Junior High Media Center's curriculum, which has been aligned with the Maine Learning Results. Media Skills Curriculum
Grades 6-8
CURRICULUM OVERVIEW:

The Waterville School System's library/media centers will provide a quality program of integrated educational media and technology to support the curriculum and goals of the Waterville schools. The ability to find, evaluate, and use information effectively to support a student's interests or curriculum needs is the primary goal of educational media programs. Information skills allow students to meet the Guiding Principles set forth in the Maine Learning Results.
The key to effective media skills instruction is cooperation between teachers and the media specialist. Students learn best that for which they have a need. Three areas of instruction have been identified: orientation, reading, and research.
The Waterville Public School System uses Maine's Learning Results as a framework in organizing all areas of the curriculum. All learning results can be found in bold print with parenthetical references indicating the content area, standard, and performance task indicator.
PERFORMANCE INDICATORS:
Grade 6
Students entering the junior high will receive an introduction to the media center and its resources. Information skills previously introduced will be reinforced and new skills will be presented.

Every student receives a free, new book from a wide selection chosen by a team of volunteers. Media Center Aides Fifth grade students have the opportunity to volunteer at Meroby Media Center as an aide. Aides help keep the area clean, tidy, and running smoothly by checking computers at the end of the day, dusting, and keeping tables and displays neat. Aides are occasionally rewarded with speeches of appreciation, certificates of merit, and candy! Technology Club Fourth grade students can learn more about computer programs that will help them with their school assignments when they join a session of the Technology Club. The Club meets for an hour a week for about 5 weeks in the Fall and again in the Spring. Mr. Plante and Ms. Hammond teach programs like Powerpoint, iMovie and iPhoto. Students make a project showing what they have learned and have a lot of fun doing it. Ask any fourth grader who's been in the club. Book Fair Scholastic Book Fair visits Meroby in the Fall during Open House and again in the Spring on Fine Arts night, bringing fun and exciting selections, activities, and another opportunity for students to be behind the scenes and in the action. Students work at the Family event as book wranglers, check out table assistants, poster table workers, and various other jobs depending on the theme of the fair. They also help set up and break down the Fair. Budding thespians perform intercom skits for advanced advertising, too.

Information Technology at Area Schools
Internet Connectivity: Rumford is a rural town in western Maine that is slowly
building a community online. The local schools, library, hospital, several businesses,
including the Chamber of Commerce and local tourist agencies, already feature web-sites
which offer informational services to visitors and tourists as well as area residents.
However, modern e-commerce services are yet to be explored by these businesses, and
some businesses and health care resources are still in the process of launching their
presence on the World Wide Web. It is approximated, though accurate figures are unavailable, that around 1000 households and businesses in the Rumford area have access to the Internet through the five major internet service providers serving the community. Internet Service Providers: LogOn America (Formerly Agate.net): This Internet Service provider has about 300 customers in the Rumford area. LogOn America is based out of Kennebunk, Maine. www.logonamerica.com
