Pneumococcal Conjunctivitis at an Elementary School - Maine, September 20December 6, 2002 On October 18, 2002, the nurse at an elementary school in Westbrook, Maine, notified the Maine Bureau of Health (MBOH) of an increase in the number of students with conjunctivitis. During September 23October 18, a total of 31 students in kindergarten and in first and second grades either were reported by parents to the nurse as having conjunctivitis or had conjunctivitis diagnosed by the nurse at school. Conjunctival swab cultures from five (38%) of the 13 students who were tested initially grew Streptococcus pneumoniae . This report documents additional cases in the community and summarizes preliminary results of the investigation of this outbreak, which indicated that the outbreak was caused by the same nontypeable strain of pneumococcus that caused an outbreak of conjunctivitis among college students in New Hampshire during JanuaryMarch 2002 ( ). This is the first time that this strain has been reported as the cause of a conjunctivitis outbreak among schoolchildren. The youths were recognized as state winners of contests sponsored by the association. The awards were presented at a special banquet, attended by over 300 members, guests, and families of the recipients. The first awards presented were for the Americanism Essay Contest. This contest was open to 5th Graders, who wrote a 200 word essay on "Why I am proud to say the Pledge of Allegiance." The Elks nationwide promote this contest to encourage our nations youth to share in the love for our country by showing and promoting the ideals that make this country great. Presenting the awards was MEA Americanism Director Richie Philbrick. Over 900 students participated in the program across the State of Maine. The state winners were Caitlin Barrows and Jordan Strayer, both sponsored by the Bangor Elks Lodge. Other district winners included Jessica Stratton (Augusta Elks Lodge), Carl Zurhorst (Rumford Elks Lodge), Samantha Paquette (Wells Elks Lodge), and Ryan Legere (Sanford Elks Lodge). Those in attendance had the opportunity to hear the inspirational messages that both Barrows and Strayer exhibited when they read their essays. The two state winners each received a plaque with their essay engraved upon it, along with a monetary award.
