Military Request Prompts Criticism
Paula Gibbs

George Flanders was a member of the class of 1952. He remembers the McCarthy hearings and the notorious "blacklists" that were generated. Flanders, who has served several stints on the Wiscasset School Committee since his graduation, took aim at a tactic he described as "blackmail" by the federal government at Monday night's monthly meeting. It was a letter from Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld and Secretary of Education Rod Paige calling for schools to give the military access to student records that prompted calls of foul from Flanders and others at the meeting. Although the letter said "Congress recently passed legislation that requires high schools to provide to military recruiters, upon request, access to secondary school students and directory information on those students," other information included with the letter said parents can "opt out" of providing such information. "They buried it," said Superintendent of Schools Alan Hawkins, referring to a question and answer sheet which said any school that receives money from the federal government under ESEA (Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965) "must comply with a request by a military recruiter... unless a parent has opted out' of providing such information."

Maine teachers warned: Watch anti-war talk in classroom
Maine's Department of Education Commissioner Duke Albanese sent a memo to superintendents and principals regarding sensitivity to the families of military personnel. Story Tools RELATED Read the letter from Maine's commissioner of education PORTLAND, Maine (AP) After complaints that the children of soldiers were upset by anti-war comments at school, Maine's top education official warned teachers to be careful of what they say in class about a possible invasion of Iraq. The Maine Army National Guard has received a dozen reports of children of guard members in elementary and middle schools who said teachers and fellow students have criticized the looming conflict. Maj. Peter Rogers quoted parents as saying their children have come home upset or depressed because of comments in class and on the playground. "They were hearing comments like, 'The pending war in Iraq is unethical' and 'Anybody who would fight that war is also unethical,"' Rogers said. "So children who are already losing family members to deployment were understandably upset." Charles Haynes of the Freedom Forum, an educational organization in Arlington, Virginia, said he has received several dozen e-mails and phone calls in recent months from parents concerned that teachers are unfair or biased in how they address the issue of Iraq in the classroom.

ELLSWORTH SCHOOL REPORTS

Superintendent's Annual Report to the City 2003
This past year, the Ellsworth School Department has been heavily influenced by outside pressures. State and Federal changes imposed on public education are the most severe I have witnessed in my thirty-four years in public education. The development of the Learning Results, standards based education, and the new federal No Child Left Behind Act are creating operational and educational challenges that are at times overwhelming.
Before you declare me a professional whiner, please keep in mind that it is not the purpose or reason for the mandates that concern us. Rather it is the amount and intensity of the new directives that seem more than a local education department can bear. Generally the “new trends” are good for students and education. However, change usually takes time and resources, both of which are in short supply. Coupled with a lack of State and Federal funding, education across the State is on the verge of experiencing a major meltdown. We are fortunate that school employees are motivated by their desire to teach children because currently the pressure of the initiatives are at a level at which some staff would choose to leave the profession. For the last year I, as your Superintendent, have seriously tried to remain positive as we continue to attempt to comply with the mandates.
On a much more positive note the Ellsworth School Department, in spite of the pressures of State and Federal requirements, has experienced a wonderful year as we continue to grow and improve. Increases in tuitioned students, restructuring and new educational programs, a number of very helpful grants, and a great employee attitude in support of our educational mission greatly overshadow the many challenges.

"To provide and model a high school dropout prevention and return program in an environment encouraging a high level of personal commitment from students and staff. To offer a highly experiential curriculum leading to a high school diploma, where students can discover a strong sense of self worth while naming and addressing the issues whichhave sabotaged their success in school. To provide a long-term source of support for former students. To expand the understanding of learning and education for students, staff, and the community at large." From the Community School website: The Community School has been approved as a Private Secondary School by the Department of Educational and Cultural Services since 1974. The school is located in the small town of Camden, Maine (USA). The school has two main programs: The Residential Program, which focuses on high school dropouts between the ages of 16 and 20, and the Passages Program, which focuses on parents between the ages of 15 and 20 who have not yet completed their highschool education. The Community School teaches using one-to-one tutoring, small seminars, vocational training, guided life-experience, and experiential courses. Each student follows an Individual Graduation Plan which includes course requirements as well as special courses to meet his/her own specific needs. Teachers in Maine Harrassing Children
Read this. Right now. It pisses me off that teachers would use their positions to indoctrinate children like this. Don't like the idea of going to war with Iraq? That's fineI support your right to dissent. But to harrass the children of members of the military, to tell them that their parents (these men and women who put themselves in harms way for our benefit) is beyond pathetic. To tell a child that his father or mother is doing something wrong by doing their duty? I'm usually pretty laid back. I'm a nice guy. If that happened to my child, I would hunt the teacher down and fuck them up. I know that's the wrong response. Truly, I do. I just don't really care. Some behavior needs to be punished by more than a little reprimand with a wink and a pat on the back from another fucking administrator who thinks that the job of the school is to create another little politically correct (read: socialist liberal) automoton to parrot the party fucking line. Bullshit. The job of the school is to help children learn the lessons that they will need to have to survive in a world that is nothing like the sheltered halls of academia.
