3rd Annual Summer Reading Party
The Southern Maine Library District, which is comprised of 70 libraries in York, Cumberland, and selected towns in Oxford counties, is hosting the third annual summer reading program for their member libraries, collaborating with The Seashore Trolley Museum, in Kennebunkport. Libraries will celebrate their summer reading programs with a party for all participants at The Seashore Trolley Museum in Kennebunkport on Friday, August 22, 2003. The Trolley Museum has generously offered a free admission ticket for all reading program participants, and half-priced tickets for up to two adults accompanying each of the participants. Tickets to the Trolley Museum are valid for the whole day, allow the ticket holder access to all Museum facilities that are open to the public, and are good for an unlimited number of rides throughout the day on the restored, historic electric streetcars. There will also be a GIGANTIC Scholastic Book Fair that will benefit the Consolidated School library in Kennebunkport and the Trolley Museum, also there will face painting, a moon bounce, balloon sculptures and trolley rides all day long. Grilled food, lobster rolls, and refreshments will also be available . Brand new this year is “The Library Gallery,” a site for highlighting your library’s summer reading program. Each SMLD library will be offered poster space to display photos, themes, and other details. Gallery visitors will get a chance to vote on their favorite with a prize for the winning library.

63. ACLU Files Challenge To Library Internet Censorship, Maine Library Association I
maine Library Association is Among Plaintiffs. The ACLU s clients includepublic libraries from Portland, maine to Portland, Oregon.
http://www.mclu.org/march202001.htm
March 20, 2001 For Immediate Release ACLU Files Challenge to Library Internet Censorship Maine Library Association is Among Plaintiffs Acting on behalf of public libraries, library patrons and website authors nationwide, the American Civil Liberties Union today filed a major legal challenge to a federal law that forces libraries to censor constitutionally protected speech online. The Children's Internet Protection Act, known as "CHIPA," requires libraries that participate in certain federal programs to install "technology protection measures" on all of their Internet access terminals, regardless of whether federal programs paid for the terminals or Internet connections. The ACLU's clients include public libraries from Portland, Maine to Portland, Oregon. The Maine Library Association is one of the named plaintiffs in the suit. MLA President Jay Scherma, librarian at Cape Elizabeth Public Library, said, "however well-intentioned Congress may have been in passing CHIPA, it infringes profoundly on the rights of adults to information. We cannot willingly be a party to a law which could as fairly be called the Adult Internet Impediment Act. No adult should have obstacles placed in their way as they seek information." Other plaintiffs include a 15-year-old girl and her aunt, both of Philadelphia, who do not have Internet access at home; two candidates for Congress whose websites were blocked; Planetout.com, a leading website for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered persons; and Planned Parenthood Federation of America.

Nancy Marshall Speaks to Librarians' Group
AUGUSTA, Maine - Nancy Marshall, president of Marshall Communications, Inc. spoke to the annual gathering of the Central and Southern Maine Library Districts, which are part of the Maine Regional Library System, on October 18, 2001 at the Augusta Civic Center.
Entitled, "Libraries Alive! PR @ Your Library," the conference encompassed all the ways that libraries can use marketing techniques to promote the usage of libraries. Marshall talked about branding, positioning, message mapping, and proactive media relations techniques to help librarians think in new ways about public relations for libraries. Marshall provided a copy of her customized workbook to the librarians with all the information presented in her presentation, as well as a selection of actual press clippings from Maine newspapers to show how libraries are typically represented in the Maine media. The workbook also contained a complete listing of Maine media outlets for the librarians to use in their own media relations efforts. Now in its tenth year, Nancy Marshall Communications is a public relations and marketing services agency specializing in media relations for the outdoor and tourism industries, financial services organizations and economic development agencies. The agency has offices in Kingfield and North Anson, and just opened its new flagship office on Western Avenue in Augusta. The agency's clients include the Maine Office of Tourism, Maine Office of Business Development, Hinckley Yachts, The Career Centers, U.S. Cellular, Camden National Bank and United Kingfield Bank, as well as the Maine Manufacturing Extension Partnership.

The ink on President Clinton's signature was barely dry when the Maine Library Association, which represents about 1,000 librarians across the state, agreed to become the first named plaintiff in the lawsuit. The American Library Association and the People for the American Way Foundation are filing a similar suit challenging the new law. State Librarian J. Gary Nicholas said he believes if the federal law goes into effect, librarians in many smaller libraries that depend on federal funds for their Internet connections would rather lose their abilities to surf the Web than comply with the law. Nicholas said the library association knew the lawsuit was in the works. But one lawmaker said the concerns are irrational. Freshman state Rep. Brian M. Duprey, R-Hampden, has introduced a bill in the Maine House to require school and public libraries to install filtering software in any Internet-connected computer available to any child under 18. He said the filters have few flaws and would not limit the availability of information to library patrons or students.

The Thoughtful Giving Library Program
Waterville, Maine's library, built in 1902, is one of 1,679 public libraries constructed nationwide as the result of grants from steel magnate Andrew Carnegie. Carnegie's personal code of philanthropy, summarized in his essay, the Gopsel of Wealth , set out strict (and guidelines for how, why, and for what purpose a person of means should give. This series uses a lively selection of readings to approach a central and sometimes thorny issue in American society: philanthropy. Giving, be it of time or treasure, has played a significant role in the development of the United States and its unique network of charitable and voluntary organizations. Yet questions of wealth, generosity and money are almost guaranteed to provoke discomfort, as charity has always been a deeply personal and private matter. Readings for this new series in the Let's Talk About It public reading and discussion program are drawn from an anthology edited by Amy Kass entitled The Perfect Gift: the Philanthropic Imagination in Poetry and Pros . Readings for this four-part series can be customized to meet the particular interests of the audience, and have included short selections by Edith Wharton, O. Henry, Sarah Orne Jewett, Rabindranath Tagore, and others.
