Participating Schools The 9 partner schools of the Maine Lakes Conservancy Institute listed below represent the geographic and cultural diversity of Maine. As we grow our resource capacity we look forward to welcoming more schools onto the Students' Portal. For information on how to become a partner school please contact MLCI’s Director of Education, Dr. Mary Ann McGarry at eddirector@mlci.org
MLCI schools cover the state- from the Atlantic coast, to Canada, and east to bordering New Hampshire. Our schools include the largest middle level institution, Bonny Eagle Middle School, (Sebago Lakes) as well as one of the smallest K-12 schools in the state, Rangeley Regional School (Rangeley Lake).
We also travel to the Indian Township School (Long and Lewey Lakes) on the Passamaquoddy Reservation in northeast Washington County. The other six schools are: Nobleboro Middle School (Pemaquid Pond), China Middle School (China Lake), Fort Kent Elementary School (Eagle Lake), Winthrop Middle School (Maranacook Lake) Greenville Middle School (Moosehead Lake), and New Suncook School (Kezar Lake). Just as the regions vary so do the lakes and their issues. Explore the site to learn more.

And Trask, an open source advocate and the Technology Teacher/Coordinator for the Vassalboro Community School should know he is leading the charge to bring Linux into Maine's classrooms. Speaking to a full house last Thursday, Trask hosted a full-day seminar for area educational technologists and principals anxious to learn how to move their computer systems from proprietary technologies to open source Linux, on servers and the desktop. High costs and licensing restrictions are key reasons educators are considering a switch. But Trask notes that is not the only reason. "Stability, ease of use, and ease of management all drove me to Linux," he adds. His school saved $5,000 this year alone in licensing fees to Microsoft with a move to open source. David Trask's Linux seminar was coordinated by Sharon Betts, the Technology Director for the Kennebunk School Dept. as well as the secretary for the Association of Computer Technology Educators of Maine (ACTEM). Betts approached Trask to host the event and share his experience and expert advice to demonstrate to state educators that Linux is a full featured and less expensive proposition than Microsoft.

A resource center for educators interested in employment in Maine's K-12 public schools. And they have small classes - the average student-teacher ration state wide is 14:1. Many educators believe the state's strong communities and small schools and classes are an important factor in Maine students' high achievement. Year after year, Maine students achieve at the top nationally on the National Assessment for Educational Progress. And according to a July, 1999 report released by the Children's Rights Council, Maine is rated as the Number One place in the country to raise a child. This resource center is designed for educators considering relocating to or starting their careers in Maine. Included are teacher and educational support personnel job listings, plus information about teacher certification, education technician authorization, teacher salaries and benefits, school system profiles, and information about towns and cities. Small Schools with Big Politics

    By Rep. Hannah Pingree
I grew up on an island, 12 miles off the coast of Maine. When I was 16, my friends and I called it "the rock." We had some appreciation for the fact that it was a great place to grow up and even some small understanding that our island public school, with about 70 students grades K-12, was unique and offered us unparalleled opportunities for learning and directing our own education. But with five students in my class, all of whom were girls, and just five boys in the junior class, by the time I graduated we were very ready to leave the "rock."
Today, nearly 10 years later, I am back on the island representing my town and 11 other islands and small towns much like mine in the Maine State Legislature. Being in the legislature was a job I certainly hadn’t imagined myself doing in my twenties when I was 16, but after just a year in office, it has turned out to be an incredible opportunity to join the process of progress and change. And now, as my hometown school and other small schools I represent struggle under new state and federal education requirements and funding decisions, I struggle with how to make any positive progress on these problems.

BEAMM, a National Science Foundation Local Systemic Change Initiative, is a partnership of 7 Maine school districts. Currently in year three of a five year process, the grant will provide 100 hours of professional development to more than 500 K-8 teachers. The focus of the professional development is to understand mathematical ideas and pedagogy for long term student achievement; create student-centered classrooms by using exemplary instruction, curriculum materials, and assessment practices; and to reflect on practices and participate in collegial discussions about teaching and learning.

"A network is nonhierarchical. It is a web of connections among equals. The Rodale Institute has launched its 4th annual national Organic School Garden Contest, open to K-12 schools and giving awards and cash prizes of $1000 (1 st. ) $500 (2nd.) & $250 (3rd.). "The goal is to help kids make better choices for themselves by exploring the connections between food & health, in a fun, hands-on and ultimately thought provoking way," says Florence Rodale. "One way we achieve this is by encouraging children nationwide to show us how their organic school garden has impacted their nutrition, health and daily lives in general. We want to become partners in education with parents and teachers," she says.

In spring 2001, every high school teacher in the Henrico County Public Schools received an Apple iBook laptop, with 12,000 high schools students receiving one by the start of school in the fall. The state of Maine funded this portable, wireless learning technology program for all seventh and eighth grade students and teachers — 33,000 students and 3,000 teachers. The Maine Program started in 2002 with nine demonstration/exploration schools. The program will be deployed for all Maine seventh grade classrooms by the start of the 2002-03 school year, with eighth grade classrooms to follow for 2003-04.
