The Chronicle Herald Is geography destiny for eastern Canada? By Brian Lee Crowley THE WOMEN'S movement revolutionized everyone's thinking by answering no to the question "Is biology destiny?" Nature didn't limit women to childcare and homemaking. They could be professionals, managers and anything else they chose. The history of the past few decades has been in large part about playing out the consequences of that realization, with tremendous benefits for women and society at large. The revolutionary question in the coming decades for this corner of North America is not about biology, but geography. For a century and more, geography has shaped our destiny in a way that was largely beyond our control. That era has ended, but we have not yet seized control of our lives again. The corner of North America I'm referring to is not just Atlantic Canada. It also embraces the sliver of the Unites States that reaches from Maine through New Hampshire and Vermont and into northern New York State. That wedge of territory, which some are now calling Atlantica, has been outside the charmed circle of North American prosperity for years. The reasons are buried deep in our history. Especially after the Americans rejected Reciprocity and Confederation was born, the continent was divided into two national projects. Each sought to open up its half of the continent on an east-west axis. Each had a funnel on the East Coast that caught the energies of Europe and channelled them toward the conquest of the continent.

Like my colleagues in the department, I offer Denison students a variety of learning experiences, including courses, independent study projects, research assistantships, field trips to geologically exciting localities, and opportunities to participate in my ongoing research program. The courses I teach are listed and described below.
    Current Courses
FYS 102 - Geology of Volcanic Eruptions: Volcanic eruptions are amongst the most powerful and spectacular of natural phenomena. Why do volcanoes erupt? Where on earth do volcanoes occur? Why are there no volcanoes in Ohio? How does molten lava form? Why do some volcanoes explode violently and others simply emit rivers of lava? How do eruptions affect our planet and local populations? How do scientists, local officials and the press deal with volcanic crises? This course addresses these and many other fundamental questions about our volcanically active planet. Through readings, class sessions, still images, video footage, movies, and laboratory exercises, we will focus on the nature of volcanic eruptions, their products, and the hazards they pose and benefits they offer both to human populations and to life on earth.

New U.S. Park? Maine Bid Draws High-Profile Debate Brian Handwerk
for National Geographic News February 2, 2004 Robert Redford, Harrison Ford, and other Hollywood 'A-listers' are among the big-name supporters of Americans for a Maine Woods National Park, an interest group that also includes scientists, educators, and environmentalists like Jane Goodall and Edward O. Wilson. The committee was founded by RESTORE: The North Woods, a conservation organization that's spearheading a protection plan for an enormous swath of woodlands in the U.S. East. Read the full According to 2002 figures from the U.S. Forest Service, over 80 percent of Maine's 21 million acres (8.5 million hectares) is covered by forestland. Over 90 percent of that forestland is privately owned. Maine, nicknamed the Pine Tree State, is witnessing a push by environmentalists, celebrities, and others to protect forestland in the U.S. Northeast, including Maine's North Woods (pictured above). ABSTRACT
Using the World Wide Web to gather and process data from across English-speaking North America, I intend to plot the regional variations in the use of the terms "Pop" and "Soda" to describe carbonated soft drinks.
    INTRODUCTION
Since the earliest research into the the English Language as spoken in North America was begun by Noah Webster in the early 18th century, the regional variations in dialect have always been the most challenging and difficult to explain field. Since the development of carbonated beverage in 1886, one of linguistic geography
    RESEARCH
The primary source of data for this study will be submissions from readers of this web page. Obviously, this may not be a completely random sampling, but since the primary objective of the study is to map the regional distribution and not the population distribution per response, this sample should suffice. Also, since a large percentage of internet users are college students who may use dialects not local to their current place of residence, this survey asks for the respondent's "home town" and the beverage-term used by most of the population there. This data will be imperfect at best, but should be the most accurate possible without actually going into the field, and certainly the most comprehensive study of the field to date.

National Geographic Society Grant will send teachers to conservation hotspots in Brazil and U.S, allowing students to apply global lessons locally.
MAYNARD. MA 24 teachers from six states - California, Florida, Massachusetts, Maine, Rhode Island, and Washington – will venture to the vast wetlands of Brazil’s Pantanal and to the Skagit River watershed of Washington this summer to participate in conservation research projects as part of a $75,000 grant award Earthwatch Institute has received from National Geographic Society Education Foundation (NGSEF). Earthwatch’s "Strengthening Geography in Schools through Conservation Field Work and Collaboration" is strategically designed to address the lack of geographic knowledge among students in the United States.
"This innovative project will help students become stewards of our natural and cultural resources,” said Barbara Chow, Executive Director of the Society’s Education Foundation. “Giving these teachers a first-hand look at the realities of conservation issues will enliven their teaching.”
The project will send 24 geography/science educators to conservation projects in the Pantanal wetlands in Brazil and the Skagit River watershed in Washington State. Through subsequent workshops and websites, these teachers expect to reach another 2,400 K-12 teachers and 240,000 students with geography and conservation lessons linking field research to local environmental issues.
