(Ph.D., 1991), an assistant professor of geography at the University of Texas - Austin, is teaching courses in medical geography. She continues to work in Almolonga, a town in the western highlands of Guatemala. Last year she looked at the public health implications of intensive pesticide use. So far, she is concentrating on surface and groundwater contamination with agricultural chemicals. She and Dr. Hunter received the "Article with Best Content" award from the National Council for Geographic Education for their article in Journal of Geography, "Economic development threatens groundwater in Puerto Rico." Sonia is not sure that everything is bigger and better in Texas but she does say it is a lot warmer than Michigan (something her Puerto Rican nature appreciates).
