  • The Power of Place: A Brief Introduction to Maine Writers
By Amanda L. Christy The word 'Maine' for most people conjures up images of rocky shores, pine trees, and lobster dinners. Those who have visited know that crossing the Piscataqua River and entering New England's largest state means entering another world. A big blue sign on the border proclaims "Welcome to Maine – the Way Life Should Be." And it is. The physical beauty of Maine's geography alone approaches the mythical: mountainous lake regions, the Great North Woods, rugged coastline, and vast potato fields. Harsh winters melt into magical summers. Life moves a little more slowly, and the savoring of it is a little more important. Sitting in my lush backyard on a perfect summer day, it is easy to understand why so many writers have felt drawn to this place. Maine is steeped in the New England literary tradition that continues to influence the active artistic community that thrives here today. This overview is intended to provide a brief introduction to this rich heritage. It includes both native writers and those

Montana's nickname is "The Treasure State" because people found lots of gold, silver, and minerals. Montana's flag has the state seal of Montana. On the state seal is a pick, plow, and shovel. That represents the mineral industries. Montana is also the 5th biggest state in the USA. Helena is the capital of Montana. Nancy S. Age:10 Mississippi became a state on December 15, 1817 and it was the 20th state. I hope you learned a lot about Mississippi. Raquel L. Age: 10 My state is Iowa. My diorama showed Iowa's state capital building. Iowa's capital is DesMoines. DesMoines became Iowa's capital in 1857. I did a clay model of Floyd Monument. Floyd Monument is in Sioux City. I made a product map. A product map shows products. The main products are corn and hogs. I made a pig farm because the eastern side of Iowa has a lot of farms. My project cube shows Iowa's famous people. It told their name, birth date, and a fact about them. There was Herbert Hoover who was the 31st president, born in West Branch. Henry Wallace was a poet and teacher. Jaylyn W. Age: 10

My wide variety of human geography interests includes urban, social, and linguistic geography as well as critical geographies of nature and political economy; my regional interests include New England, Southern Africa, and Japan. I am currently researching contemporary transformations in gay and lesbian space in Vermont, with an eye to the intersection of geography, sexuality, and law.

Kevin Biglin, B.S., Environmental Science, University of Vermont
My interests in geography are primarily centered on using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and science for the conservation of natural resources. Specifically, my research is geared towards applying GIS to promote protection, management and resource planning activities that are proactive, holistic, multi-functional and multi-scale. Additional interests include fire ecology, wildland/urban interface ecology, land use planning, transportation and sustainable development with regional interests in Southern California and New England.
I am interested in critical theory, science studies and the problem of "expertization" in American culture. My research will examine the production of Burlington, Vermont's place-myth and the commodification of traditional downtown public places in the context of capitalist globalization and hegemonic consumerism.

    Population Estimates: Concepts and Geography
What is a population estimate? The Census Bureau's Population Estimates Program (PEP) produces July 1 estimates for years after the last published decennial census (1990), as well as for past decades. Existing data series such as births, deaths, Federal tax returns, medicare enrollment, and immigration, are used to update the decennial census base counts. PEP estimates are used in Federal funding allocations, in setting the levels of national surveys, and in monitoring recent demographic changes. A methodology reference accompanies most of our population estimates offerings. How are estimates different from projections? There is not a distinct dichotomy between population estimates and population projections, but there are some differences in time reference and derivation. Estimates usually are for the past, while projections typically are for future dates. Estimates generally use existing symptomatic data, for example, (births, deaths, migration), collected from various sources. Projections must assume future trends for fertility, mortality, and other demographic processes. At the Census Bureau, the population projections use the latest available estimates as starting points. In our current product offerings the user may see both an estimate and a projection available for the same reference date, which may not agree because they were produced at different times. In such cases, estimates are the preferred data.

Unique geography, from mountain ranges to islands to plateaus, and a northern location define Maine’s distinct seasons and varied climate. Maine’s extreme geographic location dictates a vast range in temperatures, with very cold, snowy winters and mild summers. Average temperatures in January range from to 20 degrees F (-18 to -7 c) in the north to 10 to 30 degrees F (-12 to -1 c) in the south, while average July temperatures vary from 54 to 78 degrees F (12 to 26 c) statewide. Average annual precipitation ranges from 40 to 45 inches (102 to 114 cm) statewide. Average snowfall, however, varies drastically from as little as 50 to 70 inches (127 to 178 cm) near the coast to 90 to 110 inches (229 to 279 cm) inland, falling mostly between November and March. Maine covers 35,387 square miles (91,652 sq km), with over 12% of its area covered by water. The state is heavily forested, with estimates ranging as high as 97%. Three distinct geographic areas dominate Maine: the coastal lowlands, the eastern plateau and the White Mountains. The coastal lowlands are characterized by beaches and hundreds of islands. The eastern plateau forms the interior of Maine where rivers, lakes and fertile farmland are found. The White Mountains are a dramatic range of snowy peaks located in the northwest area of the state.

    http://www.memun.org/resources/Public/HTML/Publications/LocalGovtBk/ch3.htm
Chapter 3 Types of Municipalities The geography of Maine varies from the rocky coast to the vast valleys to the mountain ranges. But there is as much contrast in Maine's municipalities as there is in its geography. Its communities vary greatly in terms of population and in land area. For example, the busy harbor city of Portland has more than 60,000 residents, and the small town of Centerville has 19. And the city of Ellsworth covers over 84 square miles, more than 40 times the size of Maine's smallest community, Randolph. Geographical location had much influence over where settlements were located in Maine and how much they grew and prospered. Portland and Searsport prospered as commercial centers because of their deep and safe harbors. Most of Maine's cities are located on the state's major rivers. In the early days these waters provided the only source of power for industry and were a transportation link with the sea. The availability of other natural resources was an important factor in determining where settlements were made and how they prospered. Some had rich soils for farmland; others were near vast forests for logging operations and the manufacturing of forest products. Communities located near mountains, lakes and ocean beaches have thrived through the years as vacation and tourist centers. This has been particularly true in more recent years as transportation has improved. Adequate transportation has always been a key factor in the development of Maine communities due to the state's location. This statement can be supported by the fact that in the late 1970's more than 70 per cent of Maine's population resided in a corridor 20 miles on either side of the interstate highway system, which runs from Kittery to Moulton. In contrast, more than 40 per cent of the land area in Maine, mostly in the northwest section of the state, is inhabited by only about 6,000 people. This area is in the form of unorganized townships. It has no local government and is supervised and taxed directly by the state. About half of Maine's approximately one million citizens live in communities of 5,000 or more population.
