The issues and ideas discussed here are as relevant today as they were then.) Not so many years ago information for new homeschoolers was scanty, the home education marketplace was virtually nonexistent, and support was where you found it. Now, there is a river of organizations, resources, products, information and opinion. The newcomer to home education, and even the veteran, can feel a bit paralyzed. Our support group gets lots of telephone calls at this time of year from bewildered parents who ask, "What is all this stuff?" Here are just a few topics that have been discussed on our support group telephone lately, along with my opinions of course. The Homeschooling Community Support groups: It can be helpful to spend time with parents and children who are healthy examples of the benefits of home education. But sometimes it is difficult to f find the right group. You may attend a local support group meeting and find that there is great pressure to homeschool in some specific way that may not be your way. The group may feel that their way is the only "right" way. In this case you may wish to consider starting your own support group. Even two or three other families with whom you feel comfortable will be a sufficient beginning. You are likely to find your group growing larger once people begin to identify it as the local "alternative" support group.

Parenting in Penobscot County Developing Parenting Skills The Penobscot County Extension Office is a source for parenting information, including a parent educator training program. "Becoming a Parent Educator" is a 22-hour program held in the summertime in which participants learn facilitating skills and are also introduced to parenting curriculums. Advocating for Assistive Technology What are my child's rights to assistive technology? Federal and state laws support providing assistive technology to individuals with disabilities. Only a few are mentioned here. You can read more about your child’s rights to assistive technology by getting copies of these and other laws and regulations from your state or national legislators. The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, the ADA, proposes to eliminate . . . “discrimination against individuals with disabilities . . . to address the major areas of discrimination faced day-to-day by people with disabilities.” The ADA’s definition of “auxiliary aids and services,” its mandates for “acquisition or modification of equipment and devices” and “reasonable accommodations” support the provision of assistive technology devices and services to individuals with disabilities. The Rehabilitation Act of 1973 was enacted so that states will assist individuals with disabilities to “prepare for and engage in gainful employment.” Because of this law, Vocational Rehabilitation is able to pay for some assistive devices and services for eligible people. Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 requires that any “program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance” comply with non-discrimination. Section 504 Regulations require that public schools provide students who have disabilities an educational opportunity equal to the educational opportunity provided to students without disabilities.
