http://www.rmcdenver.com/TXGuideWeb/equity.htm
Table of Contents Equity The real digital divide is about more than just the gap between technology "haves" and "have-nots." Rather, at its core, the divide is about a knowledge gap – about information literacy – the ability to find, organize, analyze, and transfer information in a world driven increasingly by information. In a proper context, the digital divide goes beyond access to technology itself and addresses barriers to full, effective, and knowledgeable participation in an information society. Wade Henerson, Executive Director
Leadership Conference on Civil Rights
Turning The Digital Divide Into Digital Opportunity
[9 December 1999]
Because new technologies are causing such radical changes outside the classroom, it is vital that educators understand its advantages and disadvantages and make the best uses available to all students in ways that will help them succeed in school and in life. Technology skills and knowledge are an equity issue in the job market, and in education itself. The best schools actively work to create conditions for success for each and every child; are persistent about fairness, equity, and excellence; and are willing to discuss what is fair and what is not fair, both in and out of school, for the children entrusted to their care. Equity and Equality are Not the Same
  • Equal access for using school-based technology defines a limited area of use and makes technology available for all. It does not take into consideration differential needs or whether some children are falling further behind in technology use due to factors such as lack of access to technology in the home.

An old delivery truck equipped with a dental chair, lights and teeth-cleaning equipment, the van, dubbed the Tooth Ferry, offers checkups and cleanings to schoolchildren in remote areas of Washington County. "We're seeing kids no one else can or is willing to see," says Teresa Alley, one of two dental hygienists who staff the van. "A lot of the children we see have never been to a dentist." The Tooth Ferry is funded by a grant from the Maine Health Access Foundation and operated under the Washington County Children's Program, which offers services to special needs children.

Friday, November 21, 2003 [an error occurred while processing this directive] SAU 55 special needs scores not up to par By Adam Leech rockinghamnews@seacoastonline.com 1971 CADILLAC, 4 door, excellent shape, no rust, been store 30 years. 15,888 original miles. $3,500. (207)854-9651 207-318-5919. PLAISTOW - Though school administrators admit every school could use improvements, with 140 of 438 schools in New Hampshire being told they did not make adequate yearly progress under the No Child Left Behind legislation, administrators are questioning whether adequate yearly progress is a helpful assessment tool or an unfair label. Six local schools connected to SAU 55 failed to make adequate yearly progress in the 2003 N.H. Educational Assessment and Improvement Program. If they don’t make AYP again next year, these schools will be labeled as needing improvement and face stricter state oversight.
