Finding a way to help that child, to be there in the most loving, supportive and facilitating way possible is, in effect, learning to express the most powerful and humane part of ourselves. Such a process is a daily, moment-to-moment treasure for all of us The page is loading. Please wait...

In recent years, much attention has been given to the rights of people with disabilities. Legislation and efforts of many consumer groups have spurred facilities modifications to ease access for people with physical impairments, affirmative action to increase employment opportunities and television programming to include realistic role portrayals for people with disabilities. These developments - resulting from the recognition that people with disabilities are indeed valuable and equal members of society - have helped people who have disabilities lead happier, more productive lives. The hospitality industry is also beginning to respond to the needs of disabled travelers and recreationists. However, may non-disabled people have negative or uninformed attitudes which may arise and interfere when they interact with a person who is disabled. This may arise

Sweetser
Last updated on April 14, 2004 Sweetser provides quality treatment, support and hope to children, adults and families through a network of mental health, behavioral health and educational services. Description:
Founded in 1828, Sweetser provides Maine's most comprehensive network of behavioral and mental healthcare for adults, children and families. A private and nationally-accredited nonprofit, we offer community-based, educational, residential and in-home services to those seeking treatment, support and hope from Kittery to Belfast and beyond. Working in more than 70 communities and schools, Sweetser maintains five therapy offices, a respected medical team, the state's largest school for students with special needs, nearly 30 residences for children and adults, a training institute, a recovery center and campuses in both Saco and Belfast. More than 1,200 employees and volunteers are committed to our vision of helping people find promising futures.
History:
With a history dating to 1828, Sweetser evolved from the joining of local orphanages: Children's Home of Portland, the Belfast-based Children's Aid Society of Maine, Maine Home for Boys and the original Sweetser Home for Boys in Saco. As orphanages declined, community-based care of special needs children grew, and with it, the need to address the psychological needs of children. By the early 1960s, Sweetser Children's Home, as it was known, focused on providing residential services to children with severe emotional or behavioral problems or learning disabilities.
