Posts: 72 What's an IEP? (and other special needs) My husband and I are being considered for the adoption of two siblings in Colorado (we're from Indiana, which I've heard has a tough person in charge of ICPC!).
Anyway, their profile is a little vague, so I was hoping someone could define the medical terms in "plain English" for us:
1. "The children's developmental challenges are met with an Individualized Education Plan." (What does this mean? Would they be behind academically, or is it physical/developmental?)
2. They "...have difficulty focusing on one activity at a time" and "take medication and receive therapeutic services." (For what? Adhd? Something else?)
3. They also "receive weekly physical, speech, and occupational therapies to help them with coordination, muscle tone, and speech impediments."

PLANNING FOR THE DISABLED CHILD: SPECIAL NEEDS TRUSTS
Parents of disabled children face unique challenges in planning for their children's social, medical and financial needs. It can be particularly traumatic for parents to think about who will care for their disabled child should both parents die. Planning for the unthinkable allows you to take control of your child's emotional and financial security. It will also give you peace of mind to know that your child will be cared for in the way you intended. First, you must decide where your disabled child will live if both parents are deceased. Depending on the kind and severity of your child's disability, your child may reside with a relative or close family friend, or be placed in an appropriate institution. If you want your child to live with a guardian, here are some points to keep in mind:

If the school opts to exempt severely disabled students from will fail because 95% of the special needs group did learn more about ESEA, go to www.maine.nea.org
http://www.maine.nea.org/dir2/failesea.htm
Schools Fail Under ESEA Maine’s Deputy Commissioner of Education Judy Lucarelli is predicting that within nine years all of Maine’s public schools will fail to meet the standards set by the new federal Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA). If you are skeptical, just consider ESEA’s rules. Your school fails if you do not demonstrate increased student proficiency each year. Starting with a base line of 36% of students achieving the minimum standard in 2002, the requirement moves to 45% of students in 2004, 54% in 2008, 72% in 2010, 91% in 2012, and 100% in 2014. Your school fails if every student does not demonstrate proficiency by 2013-14. Your school fails if any subgroup of students fails to meet the yearly standard for proficiency. You fail if minorities, low-income, LEP, migrant, or special needs students do not meet proficiency standards. ESEA requires the state to set benchmarks for student achievement based on test scores and graduation rates for high school. ESEA supersedes Maine’s Learning Results, which must be revised to include achievement benchmarks for grades 3-8. Right now about 25% of Maine’s students are not meeting standards and 24 schools are being monitored for "low performance." As the bar on student proficiency is raised, many more schools will fail.

Summary of The Weirdo The story The Weirdo is about a college teenager who was severely burned in a plane crash. His mother and sister died, and yet his father survived. Many locals call him the weirdo because of his disfigured face. Samantha Sanders is a sixteen year old girl who when she was nine found a dead in the Powhatan Swamp. Seven years after this incident, Sam chased after Buck, her aunt's and uncle's dog in the swamp. Staying the night in a stump, a man with a bundle walked by her side. Sam ran and wound up on Chip Clewt's roof, and was taken care of by Chip. They begin to have interest with each other and continue to keep in contact by phone. Sam then becomes interested in bear hunting, which is what Tom Telford and Chip do as a job. A big mystery unfolds as hunters and deaths reappear. Sam's father is a hunter, while her boyfriend, Chip is against hunting. Samantha learns to stand up to her fierce father and learns not to judge people before she meets them. Top of page Summary of Flowers for Algernon Flowers for Algernon is a story of a 37-year old man, Charlie, who has a very low IQ. He attends a night school to try and improve his intelligence. Charlie then takes some tests in the hospital to try to be used as a patient in a very detailed surgery to improve his IQ. Algernon is a lab mouse that had the same operation performed on him and beats Charlie in mazes all the time; that is until Charlie gets smarter. After the operation, Charlie's IQ almost doubles! He is asked by the doctors to keep writing progress reports so they can evaluate how much he is learning and at what speed.
