Massive retail expansion could harm Maine's economy by Stacy Mitchell Originally published in the Maine Sunday Telegram January 11, 2004 Developers have announced plans to construct well over 2 million square feet of large retail stores in Maine over the coming months. Wal-Mart is planning a supercenter in Westbrook and perhaps another in Topsham. Lowe's building supply is aiming at Brunswick. A 460,000-square-foot project, including Lowe's and Target, is slated for Biddeford. All of this growth will leave Maine more like the rest of the country: overrun by the same sprawling box stores and a growing traffic problem. We'll lose more open space and our downtowns and homegrown businesses will suffer. It's commonly assumed that these downsides will be more than made up for by significant economic gains, particularly new jobs and tax revenue. But many studies indicate that large-scale retail projects may in fact do more economic harm than good. The 2 million square feet of development currently in the pipeline will expand the state's retail capacity by more than 5 percent. This is on top of extensive retail construction in the late 1990s. With population and incomes growing much more slowly, however, it's unlikely that Maine can absorb all of this new retail without existing businesses losing sales. As these businesses downsize or close, jobs will be lost. Numerous studies have concluded that when superstores open, communities typically lose as many jobs as they gain.

July 15, 2002

Members of the City Council, my name is Joel Russ and I am president of the Maine Science and Technology Foundation. I thank you for the opportunity to speak this evening in support of the zoning variance for the Gulf of Maine Aquarium. In 1997 the Maine Science and Technology Foundation issued an action plan for the state. It set forth a new vision for creating a robust economy through investments in science and technology. In defining what was needed to achieve that vision by 2005, it identified five broad goals or call statements that would be essential for technology-driven prosperity. These included:
  • A call for an educated and technically-skilled workforce, including improvements in science and math in K-12 education;

Two Maine Youths Named Top National Volunteers
By Senator Susan M. Collins May 7, 2004, 20:37 Email this article Printer friendly page Senator Susan M. Collins (R-Maine) The conventional wisdom has it that today's American teenagers are apathetic about community involvement and cynical about public service. Experience, however, tells me a very different story. Teens today care a great deal about their communities and their fellow citizens, and in my job, I often meet young Mainers working hard to improve not only their local communities but also those needing help around the world. Every year - especially throughout the spring and summer - I am visited by hundreds of Maine students in my Washington office, each of whom has demonstrated an interest in how our government works and how to make it better. Recently, I met with two exceptional young people from our state - Benjamin Mendelson, 17, of Lewiston, and Sarah Cayia, 14, of Hampden - who were in Washington to be honored for their outstanding achievements in community service. Both were selected from 20,000 youth volunteers throughout America to receive the 2004 Prudential Spirit of Community Award. Conducted in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals, the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards were created nine years ago by Prudential to encourage youth volunteerism and to identify and reward young role models. Only two young people from each state, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico, are selected each year for this honor.

ABSTRACT
Using the World Wide Web to gather and process data from across English-speaking North America, I intend to plot the regional variations in the use of the terms "Pop" and "Soda" to describe carbonated soft drinks.
INTRODUCTION
Since the earliest research into the the English Language as spoken in North America was begun by Noah Webster in the early 18th century, the regional variations in dialect have always been the most challenging and difficult to explain field. Since the development of carbonated beverage in 1886, one of linguistic geography
RESEARCH
The primary source of data for this study will be submissions from readers of this web page. Obviously, this may not be a completely random sampling, but since the primary objective of the study is to map the regional distribution and not the population distribution per response, this sample should suffice. Also, since a large percentage of internet users are college students who may use dialects not local to their current place of residence, this survey asks for the respondent's "home town" and the beverage-term used by most of the population there. This data will be imperfect at best, but should be the most accurate possible without actually going into the field, and certainly the most comprehensive study of the field to date.

REVISED
A Guide to Native American Studies Programs
in the United States and Canada
Robert M. Nelson, Editor
Ten years ago, in the Fall of 1993, the Association for the Study of American Literatures published a 30-page guide to Native American Studies programs in the U.S., compiled and edited by former ASAIL President Franchot Ballinger. This new Guide to Native American Studies Programs in the United States and Canada represents an attempt to update and expand upon Professor Ballinger's pioneering work. In accordance with a 1995 ASAIL resolution, it is being published both in hardcopy form and in electronic form, so as to be available not only to ASAIL members but also to non-members, compliments of the Association. I wish to take this opportunity to acknowledge the invaluable assistance of two SAIL Editorial Assistants, Amy Davidson (1995-96) and Corrie Anderson (1996-97), who in addition to their other duties put in many hours of overtime gathering and regathering, collating and recollating information from a variety of sources including questionnaires, follow-up letters and phone calls, and worldwide websites. Thanks also to Karen Strom at University of Massachusetts, who read the final draft of this guide and provided or corrected many of the URL addresses for program websites. Our dream was to provide a comprehensive survey of U.S. and Canadian Native American Studies programs being offered as majors, minors, and certifications at the baccalaureate level or above, using (with some slight modifications and additions) Professor Ballinger's earlier categories of information on each program. And although we have made a considerable effort to locate, contact, and acquire information about Native American Studies programs (by whatever title: Native American Studies and American Indian Studies are the most common designations, though there are others) at all North American baccalaureate-granting institutions, readers should keep in mind that the

Lewiston, the second largest city in Maine, is located in the southern part of the state, 35 miles north of Portland. The records provide insight into the industrial history of New England and will enable researchers to analyze and document the industrial revolution in the East. The collection will provide data to illustrate further the societal change in America from an agrarian to an urban culture during the 19th century. The span of the records (1852-1980) will also assist in researching the decline of manufacturing in the northeastern United States during the latter part of the 20th century.
