61. Using Technology To Teach Medieval Texts
Microsoft mailing List User s Guide A basic guide for using Microsoft mailing lists. Sample Lesson Plan Responding to the General Prologue through a listserv.

On-line Discussion Groups
Chat Room Discussion Forum Listserv E-mail Introduction The advantage of on-line discussion groups is that they offer a format through which students can interact with a subject, with their fellow students, and with their teachers outside of the classroom. One possibility they provide, of course, is distance learning. Using on-line discussion groups, you can hold class even when you cannot meet with your students in a regular classroom setting. More often, however, instructors use such groups as supplements to regularly held class meetings. On-line discussions allow students to continue discussions that you might not have time to address in class, and, in doing so, they also allow students to interact with members of the class in a way that is not constrained by the fifty-minute class period. The biggest pitfall that some of these tools create is the time committment required of the instructor. If you're expanding discussion outside of class, expect the volume of discussion to increase. If you assign to students to write pages upon pages of discussion forum replies, they'll expect you at least to read, if not respond, to them all. Adjust your expectations and your lesson plans accordingly, though, and you can have great successes with any of these tools. Chat Room Chat rooms allow people separated by geographical location to converse with one another electronically in something approximating real time. In other words, it's a format similar to e-mail, except that all users open the same program, view the same screen, and interact in a way that is almost the speed of a real conversation, depending on speed of the users' typing and Internet connection.

Folk Music Mailing Lists
Some of the best goodies seem to be on the moderated list server discussion groups. To join a list server discussion group, you need to send E-mail to subscribe to it. Be forewarned, the E-mail you will receive in return from some of these groups may be lengthy, but because you recieve it as mail you can do your reading offline! Most can be subscribed to as digests or individual pieces of mail. It's a good idea to save subscription confirmation messages and the "welcome messages" from the list owners that you will occasionally receive after subscribing to a new list, they contain valuable instructions that you may want down the road. There is also a general list of music mailing lists available that you might want to check for folk-specific lists. Plus an alternative address If you have trouble with any listservers try sending the message HELP to the server to obtain a list of commands and instructions.

Nice report on sleeper cells, Jimmy!
Education Secretary Rod Paige’s characterization of the nation’s largest teachers’ union as a "terrorist organization" compels me, a professor and member of the National Education Association, to come clean. It began in Girl Scouts. Newspaper-collection drives funded field trips to summer camp, where uniformed girls sat in the firelight, singing anthems penned by, yes, blacklisted folksingers. Hearing Pete Seeger’s "Where Have All the Flowers Gone" still causes me, Manchurian Candidate -style, to repeat the Scout motto and march to the cupboard for graham crackers and marshmallows. Brainwashing as a result of this guerrilla training (not to mention selling cookies and calendars for the revolution) did its evil work. My nascent feminism, encouraged by strong female role models, accounts for my later support of the National Organization for Women and its doomed revolutionary ploy, the Equal Rights Amendment.

a high school biology teacher to give a talk to 2 of
her classes. scared. i mean, while i can often give a decent enough talk, i've never actually "lectured". Also, i don't want to present myself as some "SETI expert" (she already knows i'm not, but she's still interested because she knows of my great interest in all things SETI).

Recently, I was asked by some very nice people at the Bristol 'Brief Encounters' short film festival if I would attend a seminar/workshop for three hours as a mentor or teacher (or whatever) for a group of (mainly) new film makers before they set out to complete a five minute film in three days.
Having worked in the film industry in some capacity since 1981, and having made a reasonable living as a drama and commercial DP since 1987, this still threw up a lot of conundrum wrapped in enigmas, as it were. What can you teach or advise in three hours to, at the time, three teams, that would actually be of benefit to their production.
Now, I thought it would be a decent (and maybe profitable) idea to put together either an on-line or printed guide covering all aspects of film and video production aimed at such beginners, but also make it professional enough for it to still be a useful source of advice and reference to more established lighting and camera people either looking at other disciplines or still at the early stages of their career, without being baffling or, dare I say it, condescending.

EDU-SIG: Python in Education
Python continues to make inroads at all levels in education. As a first programming language, Python provides a lucid, interactive environment in which to explore procedural, functional and object oriented approaches to problem solving. Its high level data structures and clear syntax keep the forest in view through the trees. Other, and oft times more difficult, languages become more accessible once these basics are mastered, while Python itself remains a valuable tool in more advanced professional and business applications. Because Python is both powerful by itself, and plays well with others (including with multiple operating systems) its relevance is not diminished as one's toolbox becomes more heterogenous and specialized. Edu-sig provides an informal venue for comparing notes and discussing future possibilities for Python in education. Its origins trace to Guido van Rossum's pioneering Computer Programming for Everybody (CP4E) , a grant proposal accepted by DARPA, and which provided a modicum of funding in 1999.
