E-Mail Class Mailing Lists Class Mailing Lists: Keep in Touch with your Students If you are an instructor at Ohio University, you can use our Class Mailing Lists web tool to automatically create and manage mailing lists for classes that you teach. By default, each list includes your Oak e-mail address and the Oak e-mail addresses of all students enrolled in that class. Adds and drops are processed automatically as they happen, so the list always reflects your course's current enrollment. After the end of the quarter in which the course is offered, the list is deleted automatically. How the Lists Work Sending and receiving messages to a class list is simple. When you create a list, the system automatically generates a name for that list that can be used to send mail to everyone on the list. For example, if the generated name of your class mailing list is 'eng100-a01-fal00-list', then the class mailing list's address would be 'eng100-a01-fal00-list@ohio.edu'. When you send a message to that address using your regular e-mail client, everyone on the list automatically receives a copy of your message. Replies work the same way. Once a list has been created, no special software is needed for sending or receiving class list messages. The list's e-mail address is all you and your students need to know.

Policy for Establishing Mailing Lists at Queen's University
Listserv Policy for Establishing Mailing Lists ITServices provides Listserv Mailing List Services to faculty and continuing staff at Queen's University in support of Education, Research and Teaching. ITServices does not provide Mailing List Services to students, student organizations or clubs, or to members of the Internet community. ITServices has a responsibility to ensure these resources are being used responsibly, and must be in a position to take immediate corrective action should a problem occur. ITServices will support LISTSERV based mailing lists that meet the following criteria:
  • A Queen's faculty or continuing staff member is designated as the List Owner and assumes ownership and responsibility for the operation of the list. Primary List Owner e-mail addresses must belong to a real person and are not generic e-mail accounts.
As the designated List Owner you will:
    • Add and Delete list members and track down address changes.
    • Where appropriate, inform list members of appropriate e-mail conduct, how to contact you as the List Owner (via a Welcome message) and enforce mailing list or posting policies.

    Introduction to Mailing Lists
Email Mailing Lists are a powerful tool used by civil society organisations worldwide to promote their work, keep in touch with their networks, collaborate on projects and share information and experiences. Lists are particularly important for the many African organisations that work under conditions where access to the internet is often expensive and intermittent. Kabissa members are invited to join lists hosted on Kabissa and are also eligible for setting up their own Mailing Lists on Kabissa. All messages distributed via Kabissa Mailing Lists are archived on the Kabissa website - either in a publicly accessible archive or in a private archive for subscribers only that requires a password. Archives all support downloadable file attachments and messages containing HTML codes and non-English letters (such as accents). Kabissa has classified four different types of Mailing Lists which we host: Working Groups, Networks, Newsletters and Conferences.

Mailing lists and discussion groups differ from newsgroups mainly because they are limited to members only. You can subscribe to a list by sending a mail with a stereotype text, e.g. 'subs acl + your name' to majordomo@rome.classics.lsa.umich.edu will get you a subscription on ACL. Mailing lists are basically distribution nodes of e-mails. Every mail you send to the list adress gets posted to all members. Moderated lists have a moderator (obviously) who makes a selecti on of the incoming mail before it is sent on.
      Archives
Some list related sites offer 'list archives'. These collect some of the more important mails in one or more mailing lists. You can use these archives to get a general idea about a mailing list and its quality before you subscribe to it. The archives also permit you to read though some of the more important debates in the past. I will here only mention one general archive: Ancient Mediterranean E-Mail List Archives
E-mail lists have become an important tool for students of the ancient Mediterranean and neighboring worlds. Given the vast amount of information that can flow through these lists and the frequent difficulty of accessing past postings, we thought it worthwhile to create a searchable archive of several such relevant lists. Publicly available programs and some new ones we wrote ourselves allow full-text searches of all archived postings, access to indices organized by date or topic, and all postings from a given day.

Is there a mailing list for the project?
Yes. There are several. They are listed below. However, please check out the FAQ , the documentation , and the bug reporting guidelines before sending email to a mailing list.
I have a question! Should I just send it to one (or all) of the mailing lists below?
That depends. Have you adequately researched your question already? Cygwin is not a new project. It's been around for more than five years. That means that almost any question that you are burning to ask has probably already been asked. Almost every observation that you can make has probably been made. Almost every suggestion for improvement that you can think of has probably been suggested. So, rather than send YA "same old" observation to one of the mailing lists below, and possibly be flamed as a result, you owe it to yourself to do some background research before posting. Places to check for information would be the Cygwin FAQ , the Cygwin documentation , the web , and the mailing list archives (click on a mailing list name below to search the archive). Using one of these methods, it's likely that you'll be able to find the answers that you seek without sending email to thousands of people and you'll have the satisfaction of having gained valuable research skills.

    Electronic Mailing Lists
A mailing listalso referred to as a listserv or a listis a way of mailing a message once and sending it to an entire group of people. A list can serve any number of people, and as the list owner you have a high degree of control over the makeup of the list, the content of the discussions, and the general usefulness of the list. The Benefits of a Mailing List
One major advantage over a newsgroup is the fact that you can set your listserv up to have a limited membership. If a student is participating in an undesirable manner, you can remove him or her from the list, thereby cutting disruptive comments out of the discussion. A listserv also serves very well to broadcast messages to a large number of people. You have more than likely received messages with pages of addresses at the top. This can be infuriating for the receiver and often leads to messages being ignored. Using a listserv helps to prevent this problem.
