21. "Mailing Lists Related To TESL/TEFL And Foreign Language Teaching" By Kenji Kita

Mailing Lists Related to TESL/TEFL and Foreign Language Teaching
Kenji Kitao : Doshisha University, Kyoto, Japan
S. Kathleen Kitao : Doshisha Women's College, Kyoto, Japan
Introduction
There are many mailing lists for people who are interested in teaching English or foreign languages. We have compiled a list of about 40 mailing lists which might be interesting to you. We tried to include the names, computer addresses, list addresses, and, in some cases, descriptions, information about the list managers and their e-mail addresses, and our comments. The lists are listed alphabetically by list name. For your convenience, we made it possible to click computer addresses, where you send commands, and list addresses, where you post your messages. In order to use them, you need to register your e-mail address on the computer you are using, so that your e-mail message will show your return address. If you are not used to using mailing lists, we strongly suggest that you use TESL-L to get accustomed to posting messages, choosing commands for various purposes, etc. Then you will be able to use mailing lists effectively.

The AIBS/NCSE Evolution List Server Network
AIBS conducts a number of activities to support the teaching of evolution in schools and to ward off efforts to teach creationism in science classes or distort the teaching of evolution. One of these AIBS activities is a joint project with the National Center for Science Education ( www.ncseweb.org ) to establish and maintain an email list server for each U.S. state, for Canada, and for other select areas. The email list servers allow scientists, teachers, and other interested parties to be in touch with each other locally, nationally, and internationally. They can facilitate support groups for teachers trying to teach evolution in a difficult atmosphere. They can also permit rapid communications and grass-roots activity when school boards or legislatures are considering policies that will promote the teaching of anti-evolutionary ideas in science classes. Volunteers serve as list server managers. Most U.S. states now have list server managers, as does Canada. Their names and email addresses appear below, as do subscription instructions. Please subscribe! If your state has a contact person, but no list name, please write and encourage them to get their list server started. If your state does not appear on the list, that means no one has volunteered to run the list server. Please consider volunteering. The time commitment should not be burdensome. University computer center staff should be able to set up the list server for you. Contact Robert Gropp in the AIBS Public Policy Office at

The Linux System Administrator's Guide: Prev Chapter 14. Finding Help Next
14.1. Newsgroups and Mailing Lists
14.1.1. Finding The Right Forum
14.1.2. Before You Post
read them first . Even if they don't contain the answer to your problem, what they will do is give you a better understanding of the subject area, and that understanding will allow you to ask a more informed and sensible question. There are also archives of newsgroups and mailing lists and it is entirely possible that your question has been asked and answered previously. http://www.google.com or a similar search engine should be something you try before posting a question.
14.1.3. Writing Your Post
Okay, you have found your appropriate forum, you have read the relevant HOWTOs and FAQs, you have searched the web, but you still have not found the answer you need. Now you can start writing your post. It is always a good idea to make it clear that you already have read up on the subject by saying something like "I have read the Winmodem-HOWTO and the PPP FAQ, but neither contained what I was looking for, searching for `Winmodem Linux PPP Setup' on google didn't return anything of use either" . This shows you to be someone who is willing to make an effort rather than a lazy idiot who requires spoonfeeding. The former is likely to receive help if anyone knows the answer, the latter is likely to meet with either stony silence or outright derision.

  • What is a Mailing List?
A Mailing List (sometimes also called a 'Discussion List') is simply a list of e-mail addresses of people interested in a common topic. It provides a way for the members of this group to hold electronic discussions, without the need to be in the same place or even time zone. Rather than having to send messages to all of the members of this group, you send e-mail to a central 'list processor'. This is a software program running on a computer connected full-time to the Internet. The list processor software maintains a list of the e-mail addresses of all the group members. The list processor has a unique e-mail address for each group. This is called the 'list address'. When a member sends an e-mail message to this list address, the software automatically forwards the message to all group members. This may be just a small group, or in the case of some popular lists, several thousand members.

    Class-based mailing lists
You may or may not be aware that MAILSERV-based mailing lists are available for the classes you teach. These mailing lists replace the private distribution lists that were provided prior to Summer 1997. These mailing lists allow you, your students, and interested outsiders to communicate with each other outside the classroom via e-mail messages. In addition, a roster of your class will be e-mailed to you as an added benefit. The information contained in the roster may/should be suitable for importing into a spreadsheet or other electronic gradebook. To request a list, please provide me with the department, course, and section numbers for the class(es) desired. Section numbers are necessary even for single-section classes because they are not always numbered "01". Also, please do this via e-mail rather than telephone to avoid potential errors in the translation. Finally, if you have multiple e-mail accounts, please submit your request from the one that you will be using for list participation and management during the semester. If you have questions about any of this, please don't hesitate to ask. Contact
