41. Voice Mail Fraud - Beware
Voice mail fraud Beware. (The fraud usually occurs on business voice mailbox systems, but consumers with residential voice mail could also become targets.).
http://www.fcc.gov/cgb/consumerfacts/voicemailfraud.html
FCC Home Search Updates E-Filing ... FCC site map Voice Mail Fraud - Beware If you don't change the default password on your voice mailbox, you, or your company, could be in for a big - and expensive - surprise. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has become aware of a new form of fraud that allows hackers to use a consumer's or business's voice mail system and the default password to make collect calls without the knowledge or permission of the consumer. The Scam Works Like This A hacker calls into a voice mail system and searches for voice mailboxes that still have the default passwords active or have passwords with easily-guessed combinations, like 1-2-3-4. (Hackers know common default passwords and are able to try out the common ones until they can break into the phone system.) The hacker then uses the password to access the phone system and to make international calls. The hacker does this by first changing the voice mailbox's outgoing greeting to something like "Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, operator, I will accept the charges." Then, the hacker places a collect call to the number they've just hacked. When the (automated) operator (which is usually programmed to "listen for" key words and phrases like "yes" or "I will accept the charges") hears the outgoing "yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, operator, I will accept the charges" message, the collect call is connected. The hacker then uses this connection for long periods of time to make other international calls.

Peter Okoeguale is led from court A Nigerian has been jailed for his part in a huge international e-mail fraud.
Peter Okoeguale, 33, was jailed for 20 months for his part in the e-mail fraud, also known as the Nigerian 419 scam. Caernarfon Crown Court heard victims are promised a share of cash if they help with the movement of millions of dollars out of Africa. But they are then duped into handing over cash themselves to overcome an unforeseen difficulty. The prosecution said when Okoeguale was arrested he had floppy disks which could scan websites for e-mail addresses and for sending "spam" messages. He pleaded guilty to going equipped to cheat and is the first person to be prosecuted in north Wales for advance fee fraud. Given the gravity of this offence it's detrimental to the welfare of the UK that you should remain here
Judge John Rogers QC Okoeguale was arrested as he was about to board a ferry from Holyhead to the Irish Republic, where he has a wife and son.

The e-mails are a variation on a postal scam International fraudsters are using e-mail to try to con people in Northern Ireland into giving them their bank details, the police have warned. Internet users are being urged to ignore e-mails asking for help in transferring large sums of money out of Nigeria, South Africa and Sierra Leone. The e-mails are a variation on a scam which has been operating for years through the international postal service. Fraudsters posing as high ranking officials in an African government ask recipients to give details of their bank or building society accounts to facilitate the transfer of huge sums of money out of countries like Nigeria, South Africa or Sierra Leone. The e-mails are marked 'secret' or 'confidential' and promise up to a quarter of the funds in return for using the account. But the Police Service of Northern Ireland has warned recipients not to reply to any suspicious material they receive by post fax or e-mail.

How to Avoid Mail Fraud
We all know that stealing from the mail and using the mail to defraud are federal crimes. Yet, scams still occur. Be wary and alert. Steps: Refrain from entering sweepstakes or other games of chance if you do not know the sponsoring organization. Ignore promises of easy money. Send no money if you have "won" something or it is "free." Being asked to pay a fee to get something free or to claim a prize is another warning sign of fraud. Send only checks or money orders through the mail - never cash. Give only to charities you know. Guard your personal information. Refuse to give out your credit card or bank account numbers in response to mail from an organization you do not know. Toss away a solicitation for money that looks like a government document. The government does not solicit. Document your transactions and keep the envelopes. They are proof that mail was used for fraudulent solicitations.

Mail fraud schemer pleads guilty By the Star-Tribune staff A Salt Lake City man admitted in federal court last month that he schemed to defraud people over the Internet by offering to sell car parts, airplane parts and other items he did not in fact possess.
Pentrack pleaded guilty to one count each of mail fraud, misuse of a Social Security number, destruction of evidence and making false statements to the government, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.
U.S. District Judge Dee Benson set Pentrack's sentencing date for 2 p.m., June 14. He faces up to 20 years in prison each for mail fraud and destroying evidence, and five years each for Social Security number misuse and making false statements. The investigation began in May 2002 as a collaborative effort of Rock Springs police, the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.

Six arrested over 'Nigerian e-mail' fraud
The "Nigerian e-mail" scam is over ten years old and has possibly cost the victims hundreds of millions of dollars. There's no way to tell, really, because many people are too embarrased to call the authorities once they realize they've been had. Read a typical e-mail and see if you'd fall for their tactics. I received one of these emails last week, so it's clear this scam is still going on.
Anyway...
It looks like part of this ring of scam artists and drug dealers have been caught in South Africa by local police and detectives from the UK's Scotland Yard. Hopefully they can lock these boys up and keep them away from computers and fax machines for a few years.

  • Mail fraud The GOP's attempt to mail Social Security guarantees turns postal workers into campaign operatives. By Ben Fritz In a new twist on the Social Security debate, some House Republicans are pushing legislation that would issue a certificate to Social Security recipients falsely claiming to guarantee that their benefits cannot be cut. This legislation takes dissembling beyond what we have come to expect from politicians, making the federal government itself just another instrument for false rhetoric. Two versions of the bill The Social Security Benefits Guarantee Act of 2001 and The Social Security Guarantee Act of 2001 are before the House, sponsored by Reps. James DeMint, R-S.D., and Walter Jones, R-N.C., respectively. Both propose the same thing: that senior citizens shall, as soon as they become eligible for Social Security, receive certificates from the secretary of the treasury guaranteeing that they will receive the Social Security benefits promised under the law and that those benefits will be indexed for inflation.

I just received an e-mail that appears to be aimed at getting private information. It said: Dear Citibank customer, We are letting you know, that you, as a Citibank checking account holder, must become acquainted with our new Terms Conditions and agree to it. Please, carefully read all the parts of our new Terms Conditions and post your consent. Otherwise, we will have to suspend your Citibank checking account. This measure is to prevent misunderstanding between us and our valued customers. We are sorry for any inconvinience it may cause. Click here to access our Terms Conditions page and not allow your Citibank checking account suspension. The click takes you to a site that appears, at first glance, to be a Citibank website. In fact, it's a redirected page to a site that looks like a Citibank page but asks for information a scammer might use to rip you off.

    Cheap Wisdom: Mail fraud
By Tod Goldberg I'm here to admit that I have allegedly broken the law and may have destroyed a relationship. Consider this the letter I'd send George Knapp from prison. After dispensing with the various ads for real estate agents and their scum-sucking ilk, I scuttled the royalty statement into the bathroom for 11 minutes of hard viewing and then returned to see who had belatedly sent us a Yuletide greeting. The post office had placed the card into a tidy-looking Government Bag for Missing Greeting Cards and had written various notes thereon indicating failures in delivery due to a lack of clear writing on the address label. I did a mental checklist of people who hadn't sent me a Christmas card and who had thus been ejected from my Rolodex of holiday greetings and decided that whomever this was didn't merit any special considerations seeing as they had such crappy handwriting in the first place and then pulled out the card expecting to read the usual "peace, love and a Democratic president in 2004" message. What I got instead was the following: Dear Tim

    http://www.citibank.com/corpbank/securities/alert.htm
E-mail Fraud on the Rise Recently, e-mail users have been targeted by a global Internet scam. Intended to collect critical personal and financial information, the scam begins with a fraudulent e-mail that appears to be from a legitimate bank. These e-mails typically ask users to update their personal information, confirm their account status, or try a new online banking feature. An embedded link within the e-mail sends them to a bogus Web site that oftentimes looks similar to an actual online banking site. In addition to other sensitive data, users are asked to enter account user name and password under the guise of verifying who they are. Unfortunately, this information can then be used to gain access to real accounts online. We at Citigroup believe it is important that all online banking users are aware of such types of fraud. As a result, we've put together a brief list of what you can do to protect your financial data should you receive an e-mail similar to that described above.
    • As a rule, don't provide personal data, Social Security Number, account or credit card information over the phone or via the Web unless you've initiated the transaction.
