Science - Grade 6 - 1st Q. Science The science framework presented in this outline is what students should know, understand, and be able to do in the natural sciences. Students combine process and knowledge as they use scientific reasoning and critical thinking to develop their understanding of science. Inquiry builds conceptual bridges between process and scientific knowledge. Relevant use of developmentally appropriate technology facilitates the inquiry process.
The attainment of scientific literacy is the result of a sequential curriculum that is dependent on quality science teaching at each grade level beginning in prekindergarten. Quality science teaching requires direct, inquiry-oriented learning experiences that emphasize the processes of science and major science concepts. Consistent with national standards, fewer concepts in physical, life and earth/space sciences are explored while more emphasis is placed on in-depth understanding. The following standards provide a framework to achieve the above goals.

Magnetism: Poles/Recognize

Researchers Create Terahertz Magnetism From Non-magnetic Materials
A team of engineers and physicists at UCLA, UC San Diego and Imperial College in London has successfully created a "metamaterial" that displays strong, tunable magnetic activity at terahertz frequencies. In a paper appearing in the March 5 issue of the journal Science, the researchers outline how they designed and built a new material with unprecedented properties.
What's Related
related stories Related section: "Creating a magnetic activity at the edge of optical frequencies is the first milestone toward realizing optical magnetism, which is not found in natural materials due to the lack of a magnetic monopole," said project leader Xiang Zhang, a professor in the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science. "It will allow us to begin developing materials and devices that operate in the gap between optical frequencies and microwave frequencies. It opens the door to new applications in areas such as medicine, bio-sensing and security imaging."

Magnetism
by Ron Kurtus (revised 23 May 2004) Magnetism is a force that acts at a distance. It is seen in magnets, which strongly attract an opposite pole of another magnet or repel a like pole. Magnets also strongly attract ferromagnetic materials such as iron, nickel and cobalt and weakly repel diamagnetic materials. Magnetism has a very weak effect on human tissue and is considered safe to people. Questions you may have include:
  • What are magnetic force units? What are some properties of magnetism? Can magnetism harm you ?
This lesson will answer those questions. There is a mini-quiz is at the end of this lesson.
Magnetic force
The magnetic force is measured in Newtons/Coulomb-Meter or Newtons/Ampere-Meter, which in turn equals a Tesla. Since a Tesla is so large, the Gauss is usually used instead. 1 Tesla - 10,000 Gauss. This force is inversely proportional to the square of the distance between objects. In other words, the force at 2 meters is 1/4 the force at 1 meter, and the force at 3 meters drops to 1/9 the force at 1 meter.

The purpose of this site is to provide a forum for and challenges to a unique concept of the universe. You will be presented theories and concepts that are consistent, invariable and logical and for the most part easy for a junior high school student to understand. Though the concepts will appear controversial it is my intention to follow the conclusions of early developments in science and the logic of one basic rule which has been largely ignored. The result is that much of what has been taught in high school and university will be challenged. realscnc bookmarks

Minerals can be only identified absolutely by x-ray analysis and chemical tests. The x-ray analysis determines the structure of the mineral and the chemical tests determine the composition of the mineral. Structure and composition are the defining marks of a mineral. Unfortunately for the average collector, these tests require expensive equipment, expert know-how and often destroy the specimen. Fortunately, both structure and composition affect certain physical properties. It is through the proper use of these properties that minerals can reliably be identified. An idealized physical property is one that will give a unique result for each mineral and will always give the same result, again and again, for any and every specimen of that mineral. This is of course idealized. Mineralogists are usually happy to have a property that simply is consistent in providing the same result for every specimen of a certain mineral. Hopefully, this property also has a good range of possible results so that two similar minerals might stand a good chance of having different results. It would be nice if every mineral had their own special test that we could name after them such as the "

Magnetic properties originate from the spin properties of electrons. Where, n = volume, I = shape, m = orientation, s = spin directions. The figure below shows the directional characteristics (I) of the first three electron shape regions. Pauli exclusion principle - no two electrons in an orbital can have the same four quantum properties. This effectively limits each orbital to only two electrons. The spin properties of electrons that surround atomic nuclei are responsible for magnetic properties of a mineral. Each electron has the property of spin. Because an electron is charged, as it spins, it creates a magnetic field. This is somewhat analogous to creating a magnet by letting electrons flow through coiled wire.

    Tunable magnetic properties

Several part goals compose this project, that in general terms can be described as an attempt to understand, control and tune magnetic properties of bulk materials. In particular the magneocrystalline anisotropy (MAE), magnetostriction, and saturation magnetization are of interest. The possibility to tune these properties by means of controlling crystal structure (including amorphous phases), alloying conditions and manufacturing conditions are investigated experimentally as well as theoretically.
The project involves chemistry and physics at Uppsala University: Solid State Physics, Materials Chemistry and Condensed Matter Theory. In addition experimental work will be done at KTH on fabrication and characterization of rapidly quenched amorphous soft magnets.
The project on tuneable magnets include one part that concerns fundamental theoretical and experimental studies of 3d based alloys and compounds, with an emphasis on manganese-containing systems, e.g. Me n Mn type of compounds, where Me is a light or heavy platinum metal and n = 1, 2 or 3. Another investigation concerns Vau

    Abstract
In this paper we describe a method for growing high-purity single-grain R-Mg-Cd quasicrystals. For Rare Earth (R) elements Dy, Tb, and Gd, we report dc magnetization data taken from single quasicrystals. These quasicrystals demonstrate a temperature dependence that obeys the Curie-Weiss law at elevated temperatures, T > 50 K, and a freezing behavior similar to canonical spin-glasses at low temperatures. In particular, the quasicrystal Gd-Mg-Cd displays an unusual correlation between its freezing temperature and the strength of magnetic interactions in comparison to Tb and Dy quasicrystals. Introduction The arrangement of atoms in a conventional crystal is both ordered and periodic. In other words, all the atomic positions within a crystal can be described by an integer set of translation of a unit cell. Symmetry and the requirement that all of space be tiled limits the number of allowed crystal lattices.
