MPMS-7 SQUID Magnetometer
General
Using the MPMS-7 SQUID magnetometer, you can measure the magnetisation of your specimen in applied magnetic inductions of -7 T to +7 T throughout a temperature range of 1.7 K to 800 K. The SQUID magnetometer is open to bookings from visitors as well as research staff, postgraduate students and honours students at Monash University. We provide instruction to those who intend to be regular users of the equipment. Alternatively, the data can be collected and analysed for you. Please contact us to discuss your requirements, or your ideas for collaborative research projects. For more information General

Marine Corps' Magnetism Beckons Future General into World of Elite Warfighters
By Rudi Williams
American Forces Press Service WASHINGTON, Feb. 6, 2004 – Cornell A. Wilson Jr., a 6-foot-2-inch, 215-pound, former high school baseball and football player, chose academics over sports in college. And even though he was in the Navy ROTC program, he chose a commission in the Marine Corps over one in the Navy. College was where young Wilson became fascinated by the gung-ho reputation, fellowship of valor and esprit de corps of America's warrior elite – the Marine Corps. Marine Corps Brig. Gen. Cornell A. Wilson Jr. talks to troops when he was commander of the Combined Joint Task Force Consequence Management at Camp Doha, Kuwait. The task force was in Kuwait to support troops engaged in Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. Wilson has been selected for promotion to major general, and when he receives his second star, he will be the highest-ranking African-American in the Marines. Photo courtesy of U.S. Marine Corps

What is Energy Kid's Corner Milestones Energy Quiz ... About Energy Ant and Us GENERAL MILESTONES
Energy Consumption Milestones Year Event Energy use per person increased over time. Per capita energy consumption decreased ten percent. Thirty four percent of total energy was used to make electricity.
General Energy Milestones Beginning in Time Immemorial - Fire is discovered to be good for cooking, heating and scaring wild animals away. Year Event 3000 B.C. Humans began using petroleum. Mesopotamians of that era used rock oil in architectural adhesives, ship caulks, medicines, and roads. The Chinese of two millennia ago refined crude oil for use in lamps and in heating homes. 2800 B.C. Sumerian clay tablets record oil sales by amphorae. This olive oil is used in Sumerian lamps and in cooking. 1100 B.C. Scattered records exist of the use of coal as a fuel. 200 B.C. First practical use of natural gas is attributed to the Chinese. They used it to make salt from brine in gas-fired evaporators, boring shallow wells with crude percussion rigs and conveying the gas to the evaporators via bamboo pipes.

History
A Ridiculously Brief History of Electricity and Magnetism Mostly from E. T. Whittaker's A History of the Theories of Aether and Electricity... 900 BC - Magnus, a Greek shepherd, walks across a field of black stones which pull the iron nails out of his sandals and the iron tip from his shepherd's staff (authenticity not guaranteed). This region becomes known as Magnesia. 600 BC - Thales of Miletos rubs amber ( elektron in Greek) with cat fur and picks up bits of feathers. 1269 - Petrus Peregrinus of Picardy, Italy, discovers that natural spherical magnets (lodestones) align needles with lines of longitude pointing between two pole positions on the stone. 1600 - William Gilbert, court physician to Queen Elizabeth, discovers that the earth is a giant magnet just like one of the stones of Peregrinus, explaining how compasses work. He also discusses static electricity and invents an electric fluid which is liberated by rubbing. ca. 1620 - Niccolo Cabeo discovers that electricity can be repulsive as well as attractive.
