FERDINAND MAGELLAN
The first circumnavigation of the globe was led by Ferdinand Magellan. He was born in the spring of 1480 to a family of lower nobility. Educated in the Portuguese court, Magellan proved himself in many battles in the name of his country. Like Columbus before him, Magellan believed he could get to the Spice Islands by sailing west. He knew he would have to sail around or through the New World to do so. Like so many explorers before him, he thought the earth was much smaller than it actually is. Snubbed by the Portuguese king, Magellan easily convinced the teenaged Spanish king, Charles I (also known as the Holy Roman emperor Charles V ) that at least some of the Spice Islands lay in the Spanish half of the undiscovered world. King Charles approved Magellan's plan and granted him generous funds on March 22, 1518. With money from the king, the explorer was able to obtain five ships (possibly naos) called the Trinidad , the San Antonio , the Concepcion , the Victoria , and the Santiago . In September [1519], he set sail with 270 men. A good deal of what we know of the voyage of Magellan came from an Italian crew member

Ferdinand Magellan
(Portuguese The first circumnavigator of the real world; born about 1480 at Saborosa in Villa Real, Province of Traz os Montes, Portugal ; died during his voyage of discovery on the Island of Mactan in the Philippines , 27 April 1521. He was the son of Pedro Ruy de Magalhaes, mayor of the town, and of Alda de Mezquita. He was brought up at the Court of Portugal and learned astronomy and the nautical sciences under good teachers, among whom may have been Martin Behaim . These studies filled him at an early age with enthusiasm for the great voyages of discovery which were being made at that period. In 1505, he took part in the expedition of Francisco d'Almeida, which was equipped to establish the Portuguese viceroyalty in India , and in 1511 he performed important services in the Portuguese conquest of Malacca . He returned home in 1512 and took part in the Portuguese expedition to Morocco , where he was severely wounded. On account of a personal disagreement with the commander-in-chief, he left the army without permission. This and an unfavourable report that had been made upon him by Almeida led to his disgrace with the king. pope to Spain . Magellan therefore resolved to seek the Moluccas by sailing to the west around South America. As he could not hope to arouse interest for the carrying out of his plans in Portugal , and was himself, moreover misjudged and ignored, he renounced his nationality and offered his services to

Explorers of the Millennium
Our web site, "Explorers of the Millennium," will provide students with a wealth of information about the most important explorers of the past thousand years in a simple, easy-to-use format. We included reports on nineteen explorers, chosen by members of our team. We organized the explorers on separate "Hall of Fame" and "Timeline" web pages, so that users can look for a particular explorer by name or by century. We have a links page to help students find other helpful Web sites that relate to the explorers selected. A quiz section gives visitors a chance to see what they know about some of our explorers. A feedback page invites visitors to submit their own nominations for our Explorers' Hall of Fame. We hope that a visit to "Explorers of the Millennium" will answer students' questions about explorers, lead them to new sources of information, and encourage them to think critically about which explorers were the "greatest" and why. Ferdinand Magellan: World Explorer

Ferdinand Magellan (1480-1521) was a Portuguese explorer who led the first expedition that sailed around the Earth (1519-1522). Magellan also named the Pacific Ocean (the name means that it is a calm, peaceful ocean). Magellan was born in Northern Portugal (either in Sabrosa or in Oporto). His parents, Pedro Ruy de Magalhaes and Alda de Mezquita, were members of the nobility (they were wealthy and powerful). Early in his career, Magellan sailed to India and to the Far East many times via Africa's Cape of Good Hope. He sailed for his native Portugal, but a dispute with the Portuguese King Manoel II turned him against the Portuguese. Thereafter, he sailed for Spain. Go to a Magellan printout

MAGELLAN
Great explorer
INTRODUCTION
Ferdinand Magellan was one of the greatest explorers of the Renaissance Period.
BACKGROUND
Magellan was born in 1480. In his native tongue his name was Fernanao de Magalhaes. In his younger years he became a page in the Portuguese court. He became a soldier when he was 25 and served in India. In 1512 he went to offer his services to the king of Spain. Inspired by rumors of another ocean on the other side of the new world that Christopher Columbus had discovered, he wanted to prove that the Spice Islands were on the Spanish side of the line of demarcation between Spain and Portugal. In 1518, King Charles I of Spain approved the plan and after a year of preparation the expedition left Seville on September 20, 1519. Food and water gave out and the crew had to eat rats, ox hides, and sawdust before reaching Guam. In 1521, Magellan was killed in a fight between local natives while on the Spice Islands.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS
At a young age of 17 Magellan sailed around the Cape of Good Hope and he sailed for the king of Spain. He got five ships and left Seville on September 20, 1519. He sailed around the tip of South America. He found the westward passage and it was named the Strait of Magellan in his name. He also found the new ocean and named it the Pacific in honour of its calm and peaceful waters, and crossed it East to West.
