Teach Your Horse to Tie Make a safe and systematic lesson plan when schooling a horse to stand steady. By Karen Kopp Du Teil with Marvin Walker Be sure to tie your horse high at least wither height and in an area free of clutter or debris. So you say Ol' Red has hitching down pat. He'll stand tied to anything, for any length of time, without any complaints at all. That is, as long as a pigeon doesn't unexpectedly swoop down from the barn's rafters. Or someone doesn't happen to walk up to him with an open umbrella. Or he never decides that he has other, more pressing items on his personal agenda. But really, you insist, except for that time he broke his halterwhich really doesn't count since that stray deer had no business wandering through the barn looking for foodRed will stand when tied. Still you also realize that you and Ol' Red have been very lucky indeed. It's quite possible that he could have flipped over backward during his struggle or run out onto the local expressway as he attempted to flee from the deer. In all honesty, you admit to yourself, there's something seriously lacking in Red's ability to stand tied. Perhaps some well-planned reschooling will convince him that when he's tied there is no possible way he can escapeno matter what sort of equine-eating monster may appear in his vicinity.

When I was a lad, I served a term as a Paper Trooper. A Paper Trooper was a juvenile who went about with a little wagon, begged householders to give him old newspapers, magazines and books, and then hauled his gleanings to a local school. The newspapers, magazines and books were later shipped from the school to some industrial plant, which allegedly used them in some vital process. I don't remember very much about my adventures as a Paper Trooper, but I surely can recall the day when, as I unloaded stuff from my wagon, I found a paperback book containing hundreds of items from "Believe It or Not!" Robert L. Ripley's syndicated catalogue of oddities that had been appearing for many years in newspapers throughout the country. I kept the paperback for myself, and during the next few days I absorbed its delights. Using cartoons and one-line narratives that explained nothing, Ripley presented "facts" about astounding events, stupefying coincidences, marvelous objects, and the bizarre customs of peoples in distant lands. He identified the biggest this and the smallest that, he told of deformed vegetables that resembled famous persons, and he noted the feats of armless violinists and other talented freaks. And best of all, for a Paper Trooper who was interested in nature and science, he cited amazing things from the realm of natural history. Hence it was from Ripley that I first learned the "fact" that all sharks had to swim continuously to force water over their gills, and that they would suffocate if they couldn't keep moving!

The Failure of the Churches Let us remember: Christ has not failed It is the human element which has failed and which has thwarted His intentions, and prostituted the truth which He presented. Theology, dogma, doctrine, materialism, politics and money have created a vast dark cloud between the churches and God; they have shut out the true vision of God's love, and it is to this vision of a loving reality and to a vital recognition of its implications that we must return. Is there any chance that a renewal of the faith as it was in Christ will return? Are there enough men of vision in the churches to save the day - a vision of [125] meeting the need of man and not a vision of the growth and aggrandizement of the churches? Such men do exist in every religious organization, but they are deplorably few. Even if united (which seems as yet sadly impossible because of doctrinal differences), they present a somewhat futile group versus the organized power, the materialistic splendor, the vested interests and the fanatical determination of the reactionary ecclesiastics of all faiths. It is usually the struggling minority (in this case the spiritually-minded few) who guard the true vision and finally bring it into being; they are the ones who walk the torrid, unhappy streets with agonizing humanity and who, therefore, recognize in an acute sense the need for the regeneration of the churches.

Finding Ancestors in Periodicals
by Kathleen W. Hinckley, CGRS Printer-friendly version What You'll Find in Genealogy Magazines In genealogical magazines you'll find everything from complete family histories and how-to articles to research queries and case studies that can teach you how to look at a research problem a new way. Are you a typical genealogist with boxes or file cabinets bulging with census records, deeds, and marriage certificates? You probably have some military pension files and a collection of flowery obituaries. Perhaps you found some long-lost cousins and have pages and pages of correspondence and photocopies of documents from shared research. But if you are a typical genealogist, you also want more! You want the maiden name of your great-grandmother. You want to know exactly when your immigrant ancestor arrived in the United States. Or maybe you cannot figure out where your great-great-grandparents married. The answers to your genealogical puzzles may be buried in periodicals. Have you looked? If not, you are missing a gold mine of information.

    Laura Ferrante-Fernandes
    Contents of Curriculum Unit 82.05.01:
    To Guide Entry
    I. Rationale:
Every year teaching, I have found that students “love” to put on skits and to make “fools” of themselves especially in front of an audience. Learning to speak a language may be a long and tedious process. The teacher, as a facilitator, could change this by being highly motivated and innovative. The students must carefully repeat models and imitate the fluent instructor. Memorization may be involved in order to gain greater confidence. Through memorization, students retain more. Rehearsing and practicing are all preliminary activities necessary for actual conversation. On stage, the student acquires a “feeling” for the spoken language. At the same time, mastery of the idioms is facilitated. Students, also, fulfill a need to communicate in the language as performers. Thus, performance, as well as the other activities, described within, will aim to accomplish vocalization by presenting the students with an enjoyable and sound method in which to learn a foreign language. This unit is offered as an aid to teachers of a second language, especially in the implementation of oral skills. It has been most frustrating each year to encounter so much enthusiasm on the part of the students and so little material available for dramatic productions. Hopefully, this unit will fill this void by providing a guide for teachers who are in the same predicament and who are pressed for time. This curriculum project will provide a series of lesson plans influenced by time-on-task. Concurrently, it will provide a series of skits which progressively get more difficult and longer for the students. The annotated bibliography will also provide a list of other possible sources for adaptation and/or complete use.

    Q. A co-worker asked me to teach her 14-year-old how to read. She's reading on a 2.5 grade level. What are some ways I can help her without boring her to death with children's books and games? Where do I even begin helping her with comprehension and phonics? A. In order to teach this girl how to read you need to know what her problem is. That means knowing the cause of her reading disability. Here is a checklist to consider in answering this question. 1. Has she been taught poorly or has she moved from school to school? If this is the case, then she might benefit from a modified "adult literacy" program. This means that she would be taught to read in a systematic fashion, with the assumption that there are no real barriers, such as learning disabilities or mental retardation, to her acquisition of reading skills. In this case, you could use almost any good reading text from a public school and get her vocabulary words from her daily life, and from the newspaper, and magazines that she might like. For ideas about how to teach phonics, you might try two excellent books by Patricia Cunningham: Phonics They Use: Words for Reading and Writing and Making Words 2. Has some qualified professional said that she has a
