It has a 4,828 km coastline with a narrow coastal plain with rivers and a high plateau and mountains in centre and a tropical climate The mixture of mainly African, Arab and Indonesian peoples is reflected in the culture and cuisine and add to this a touch of European (mainly French) and you have a unique culinary phenomenon. Ancient Times and Influences Although the earliest history of inhabitants of Madagascar is a little vague, it is believed that Polynesians started to populate the island in earnest around 2000 years ago followed by Africans. These expert sea-farers probably arrived there using outrigger canoes – no mean feat for those times. What is certain, is that these first visitors had their pick of a huge range of indigenous plants and animals to eat. Despite the richness in terms of edible produce, it is known that the new visitors very sensibly carried livestock and seeds from their homelands. In particular, the Africans introduce the Zebu, a type of cattle now to be seen all over the island and sheep and the Asians brought with them rice, which quickly became a staple food, bananas and coconuts. Naturally, farming techniques were also brought with them. One in particular known as "tavy" which is a slash and burn method whereby the farmer cuts down a portion of the forest, burns it then plants rice which is subsequently irrigated by rainfall alone. When practised at its best, once the rice is harvested, the land is left fallow for many years to recuperate. Unfortunately in Madagascar the need for ever more food due to an explosion in the populace, meant that the land wasn’t given the chance to be restored resulting in large areas being laid waste, although with some work, these areas are suitable for grazing the large amount of cattle on the island.

Goodman, Steven M. and Jonathan P. Benstead, editors The Natural History of Madagascar Cloth $85.00sp 0-226-30306-3 Fall 2003 Separated from the mainland of Africa for 160 million years, Madagascar has evolved an incredible wealth of biodiversity, with thousands of species that can be found nowhere else on earth. For instance, of its estimated 12,000 plant species, nearly 10,000 are unique to Madagascar. Malagasy animals are just as spectacular, from its almost forty currently recognized species of lemursa primate group found only hereto the numerous species of tiny dwarf chameleons. With astounding frequency scientists discover a previously unknown species in Madagascarand at almost the same rate another natural area of habitat is degraded or destroyed, a combination that recently led conservation organizations to name Madagascar one of the most important and threatened conservation priorities on the planet. The Natural History of Madagascar The Natural History of Madagascar will be the invaluable reference for anyone interested in the Malagasy environment, from biologists and conservationists to policymakers and ecotourists.

Description and Natural History of the Periwinkle
C atharanthus roseus is known as the common or Madagascar periwinkle, though its name and classification may be contradictory in some literature because this plant was formerly classified as the species Vinca rosea Lochnera rosea and Ammocallis rosea . Furthermore, lesser periwinkle ( Vinca minor ) may also be called common periwinkle. Both species are also known as myrtle.
In any case, this periwinkle is a perennial , evergreen herb in the dogbane family (Apocynaceae) that was originally native to the island of Madagascar. It has been widely cultivated for hundreds of years and can now be found growing wild in most warm regions of the world, including the Southern U.S. The plants grow one or two feet high, have glossy, dark green leaves (1-2 inches long) and flowers all summer long. The blooms of the natural wild plants are a pale pink with a purple "eye" in their centers, but horticulturists have developed varieties with colors ranging from white to hot pink to purple.
The plant has historically been used to treat a wide assortment of diseases. It was used as a folk remedy for

The written history of Madagascar began in the seventh century A.D., when Arabs established trading posts along the northwest coast. However, the first people who came to Madagascar were from Polynesia, mostly from Indonesia . This explains the malagasy features which are a mixture of Asian and African, as well as of the Arabs who came later. Because of tropical storms which commonly affect the coast, some early settlers left the coast and went to live in the centre of the island in the mountains where the weather is cooler and less windy. The people who live in the mountains today have preserved many of the Asian features. European contact began in the 1500s, when Portuguese sea captain Diego Dias sighted the island after his ship became separated from a fleet bound for India . In the late 17th century, the French established trading posts along the east coast. From about 1774 to 1824, it was a favorite haunt for pirates , including Americans , one of whom brought Malagasy rice to South Carolina Beginning in the 1790s

Comoros - History
Formerly attached to Madagascar, the Comoros became a separate French Overseas Territory in 1947. The islands achieved internal self-government in December 1961, with a Chamber of Deputies and a Government Council responsible for local administration.
Elections in December 1972 resulted in a large majority for parties advocating independence, and Ahmed Abdallah became President of the Government Council. In June 1973 he was restyled President of the Government.
At a referendum in December 1974 96% of the voters expressed support for independence, despite the opposition of the Mayotte Party, which sought the status of a French Department for the island of Mayotte.
On 3 August 1997 the "political directorate" unilaterally declared Nzwani´s secession from the Comoros, despite an earlier proposal made by Taki to decentralize power and give increased autonomy to the islands.
The separatists subsequently elected Ibrahim as president of a 13-member "politico-administrative co-ordination" which included Abdou Madi, a former Prime Minister during Djohar´s presidency, as spokesperson.
The declaration of independence was condemned by Djoussouf who appealed for French mediation in the crisis. France, however, while denoucing the secession, declared itself in favour of the intervention of the

The coelacanth is a primitive crossopterygian (lobe-finned) fish which first appeared in the fossil record about 360 million years ago. Up until 1938 the coelacanth was thought to have become extinct about eighty million years ago. In 1938 a coelacanth was caught by fishermen on the vessel Nerine trawling off the mouth of the Chalumna River in South Africa. The fish measured about 1.5 m (5 feet) in length and weighed 57 kg (126 lbs). Marjorie Courtenay-Latimer, a curator at the East London Museum, could not identify the fish. She sent a sketch to J. L. B. Smith at Rhodes University in South Africa who identified the fish as a coelacanth. This modern species was given the scientific name Latimeria chalumnae The next coelacanth was not caught until 1952. Since then at least 200 Coelacanths have been caught in and around the Comoro Islands. In 1998 a new population was discovered off North Sulawesi, Indonesia. The Indonesian coelacanths appear quite similar to those from Africa except they are brown in color rather than blue and their sides sport gold flecks. The Indonesian coelacanth has been given the scientific name Latimeria menadoensis Coelacanths comprise one of the two groups of lobe-finned fish. The other group contains the Rhipidistia, all of whose members are assumed to be extinct. Coelacanths probably evolved from the Rhipidistia. The lobe-finned fish are generally thought to be ancestral to all later land-living vertebrates.
