    Geography and Evolution
Madagascar is divided into roughly four major habitat types separated by a chain of mountains that runs down the length of the island: rain forest covers the eastern slopes of the mountains, at one time all the way to the eastern seaboard; remnant patches of what was once an enormous dry deciduous forest can be found along the west side of the island; while grasslands typical of the high plateau now dominate the island's scenery; and spiny desert is found at the southern end of the island.
According to geologists, the island was once attached to Africa about 165 million years ago, at a time in history when dinosaurs ruled the earth. As massive continents drifted apart, the island of Madagascar separated from Africa, and its fauna and flora have evolved along separate lines ever since. Unlike Africa, there are no "mega-fauna"no elephants, giraffe, or antelope, no lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, or wild dogs. There are no front-fanged snakes of the type that keeps the wary biologist looking around in Africa.
About 75% of the plants and animals that exist on Madagascar, exist there and nowhere else on earththey are
