2. LA PRODUCTION

A History of Madagascar
Madagascar is home to one of the worldþs less widely known human cultures. Situated in the Indian Ocean, over 400 kilometres from the coast of Mozambique, it cannot really be said to be part of Africa, especially as Malagasy cultures, and particularly the Malagasy language, have more in common with Asia, and specifically Indonesia, than they do with Africa. By Stephen Ellis
Inasmuch as malgachisants - as academic specialists are known - have had a background in area studies, it has tended to be a grounding in Africa rather than Asia. This is rather paradoxical, for not only is the Malagasy language of the Malayo-Polynesian group, but it is generally believed that Madagascarþs earliest immigrants were probably of Indonesian origin, and subsequent influences have been assimilated into what is still sometimes recognizable as an Indonesian-related culture. Despite the existence of a number of excellent works on the Malagasy language, it has been relatively little studied by specialists of Asia who may find in Malagasy culture, and in the language especially, clues as to the history of some Asian languages which have developed from common roots.
Just as Madagascar has been the preserve of specialists in the academic world, so it has also in the business and commercial world. Madagascarþs economy has stagnated since the early 1970s, and it is rarely the subject of international attention for this reason. Periodic attempts to build a tourist industry have not led to the development of mass tourism, and, in general, those outsiders who have personal knowledge of the island remain rather few in number.

Cultures of Madagascar: Ebb and Flow of Influences
On March 28 and 29 1994 an international congress on Madagascar was held at Leiden University. It was a great event because for the first time Madagascar came into the academic limelight in the Netherlands. The date coincided with a public festival in Madagascar, although it was not chosen with this particular purpose in mind. On March 29 the Malagasy nation celebrates the beginning of the 1947 insurrection against French colonial rule. Madagascar is now an independent country, able to forge its cultural destiny by itself. Independence, however, does not mean isolation. Madagascar is quite prepared to enter into cooperation with other countries, when the progress of higher education and scientific research is to be achieved. Actually, the Leiden congress bore witness to the broad range of international co-operation already achieved. Participants came from many countries: Australia, France, Germany, Norway, Spain, Switzerland, Great Britain, and, of course, Madagascar and the Netherlands.
The main themes of the congress are reviewed in the different chapters of the book. All contributions are published in the language of their original presentation at the congress, either English or French. Authors and editors have generally revised the papers for publication, taking into account oral and written remarks made during and after the congress. References and bibliographies have been checked as far as possible by the editors.

Does an island with such a diversity exist?
Sand beaches, sun, sea and coconut trees are all present all along the coast. And just nearby, the beautiful scenery can change marvellously: tropical forests, dry forests, steppes and savannahs, large valleys both green and red ones are lined up offering you a genuine beauty of the nature. The island shelters an unique fauna and flora that is the reason why the visitor never gets tired of travelling from one region to another .
On top of that he will encounter friendly and smiling faces wherever he goes reminding him of the friendly nature of the land and its inhabitants. Local people have a simple way of living but are truly happy. At dawn, most of the peasants eagerly go to work in the fields.

The Culture of Fire on Southern Africa on Example of Lesotho and Madagascar
An Interim Report of the Working Group Forest Technology (IFFN No. 23 - December 2000, p. 50-54) Preface
At the stage of writing this report two countries returned the questionnaires which was circulated to GTZ projects in Southern Africa. Thus, this report is restricted to Lesotho and Madagascar (50% of the island) and a short description for Kenya. Introduction The discussion about pros and cons of fire has and is continuing over the decades and still there is no general answer. One of the difficulties for this is, which indicators should be used for evaluation (forest area, growing rate, income etc.), perhaps biodiversity is the best indicator. Concerning this, Pyne (1995) wrote aptly: "… Biodiversity can be lost as surely through fire exclusion as through fire excess". The contemporary world fire situation is changing dramatically. Two elements have worked to upset any systems. One is climate, the other humanity. The trends are alarming; fire, climate and humanity have begun to interact in new ways. The rapid growth rate of population in the African countries increases dramatically the frequency of fire. This is not a question of a natural process but it is anthropogenic interference into nature. New fire climax vegetation will be created and frequently the degeneration chain will start into progress, especially where the grassland is diminishing.

The Indian Ocean island of Madagascar separated from mainland Africa some 130-million years ago. Since then, its geography, biology, culture and history have evolved along unique lines. The island's famed lemurs and other fauna and flora found nowhere else in the world, are explained by its physical isolation. But the unusual cultural mix that underlies Madagascar's sensational palette of musical styles reflects the brave souls who came to live in this vast, wild, beautiful land. Indonesians, Africans, Arabs, Persians, and ultimately Europeans and Asians have all left their marks. Madagascar's cultural diversity makes for fascinating music, dance and other art forms, but complicated politics. Prior to the colonial period, the ethnic Merina had established an expansionist regime based in the island's central highlands. The Merina succeeded in rebuffing English colonial exploits, but in 1895, the French fought their way to power and created a colony that would last until Malagasy independence in 1960. Government since then has been unstable, marked by riots, coups, rigged elections, one impeachment, and for the people, an ever worsening economic situation.
