Antanarivo - Culture Antananarivo The culture is basically Indonesian. Arabic and Islamic contributions include an intricate system of divination, or sikidy, and calendrical features, such as the Arabic-derived names of the days of the week, which also apply to the markets held on those days. The coastal areas of the west, north, and south might be expected to show African cultural elements, but, apart from some Bantu words, these are often difficult to identify conclusively. Discover the Wild West of Madagascar
madagascar roadhouse voyages
Click here for info Big parts of the west of Madagascar are mountainous. Only a few people live there. In fact, most of the region is uninhabited, only some roads exist. Vegetation beside the river is great. We get to know the area by a pirogue tour and we visit the limestone needles of Bemaraha. The west is also well known for the fabulous Baobab-alley near Morondava and its nice beaches. It is even better in the interest as visitors to contact the people. In this country, it seems to be time has come to stop. Madagascar is a great country with friendly and patient people.

Bins of Vegetables for Sale in Zoma Market in Tananarive. Photo courtesy of Africa Focus The Democratic Republic of Madagascar, formerly known as the Malagasy Republic, is perhaps best known for its spectacular nature and incredible variety of unique plant and animal life. Separated from the African mainland by the Mozambique Channel, the island abounds with rainforests, tropical beaches, small islands and coral reefs, and protected national parks. The lemur, numerous species of butterflies, birds and amphibians, half of the world's chameleons, and 80 percent of Madagascar's plant life are endemic to the island.
The population of Madagascar is also a unique mixture of races. The majority of the island's initial immigrants were from Indonesia and South East Asia who, over the course of 2000 years, intermixed with migrants from the African mainland as well as Arab and European traders. Today, there are 18 official tribes in Madagascar. Over half of the population practices traditional religions, while approximately 40 percent are Christian and seven percent are Muslim. French and Malagasy are the official languages of the island.

Nogabe and Hugues Each year the Trust organises a funds and awareness-raising event in central London. The aims of the event are to promote Malagasy culture, the Trust's projects in Madagascar, and provide information and networks for people who are interested to visit or work in the country. Our first benefit in June 1996, showcased the excellent Justin Vali Trio, and the stunning southern group Njava, at Dingwalls in Camden. It was a complete sell-out, with more than 400 people attending. Hanitra Rasoanaivo, who leads the group Tarika, also told us about their exciting new project to revive the ancient tradition of the Valiha, which is in danger of being forgotten. Hanitra explained that 'Valiha High' teaches young children in Tana the skills of Valiha playing and buys instruments for those who cannot afford to buy their own (see the bottom of this page for how you can help). 1n 1997 we were delighted to present the UK debut of the extraordinary Malagasy guitarist D'Gary to play at the benefit.

History
The animals of Madagascar found plentiful foodstuffs, and an almost total lack of predators. Because evolutionary pressures on Madagascar's early inhabitants were almost nonexistent, the island literally teems with life forms that have changed little in hundreds of thousands, even millions of years. In many ways, Madagascar is literally a land that time forgot.
Unfortunately for many of these creatures, the arrival of man represented their first encounter with a predator. It took almost 1,000 years, but skilled human hunters managed to drive almost two dozen of those unique and irreplaceable animal species to extinction. Although they lived in tribes, the African, Indian, and Arabic races managed to avoid segregation. Over many hundreds of years, an incredible synthesis of tradition, religion, language, and genetics took place, creating a society remarkable in its uniformity of language and beliefs, and striking in its physical beauty. In 1500, Portugese explorers landed on the island of Madagascar, did a little exploration, and returned to Europe. Word of the Portugese "discovery" spread to France and England, and both countries rushed to establish settlements on the island. The local tribes formed loose coalitions to succesfully defend themselves against the invading Europeans again and again.
