Most contemporary and traditional Malagasy music revolves around dance rhythms with influences from Indonesia and the African mainland, notably Kenya. These rhythms are accompanied by the flute, whistle and valiha , a unique, 28-stringed instrument resembling a bassoon but played more like a harp. The lokanga voatavo , or cordophone, is also popular, as are a few types of guitar, including the kabosy , similar to a ukelele. Vaky soava is a rhythmic style of singing accompanied only by hand clapping, and perhaps the most renowned exponent is Paul Bert Rahasimanana, who developed a personal style that included adding a musical accompaniment. He weaves themes of poverty, love, loss and hope into his music. The regional town of Fianarantsoa has developed into a literary capital of sorts in recent years, and several contemporary novelists and writers work there. While literature didn't really flower until the 1930s and 40s, traditional oratory, called kabary , is highly regarded. Kabary's roots are in early political assemblies, in which each speaker spoke in turn. It evolved and was eventually popularised and extended to the general public as a form of entertainment. Kabary is an integral part of

Students earn 16 semester credits on a 15-week experience designed to encourage a global awareness that enables people to live in an interdependent world. Groups of seven to 25 students are led by one or two academic directors. Madagascar is home to an amazing variety of cultures, thanks to its long history as a trading nexus and migratory destination for people from throughout Indonesia, Africa, and the Arab peninsula. Today, the 18 clans that live in this island nation retain remnants of their heritage while also sharing in Madagascar’s overlying culture and language — giving rise to the Malagasy phrase "Unity Amongst Diversity." Living with a family in Antananarivo, Madagascar’s scenic highland capital built on the twelve sacred hills of Imerina, you gain an in-depth understanding of the domestic and external influences that have shaped Madagascar. A second homestay in Di©go-Suarez, an easygoing city on the island’s stunning northern tip, deepens your appreciation of Malagasy culture in all its variety.

Her graduate studies included policy analysis and mass communications, both of which combine well to serve her focus in social justice through awareness-raising. In this vein, she has worked on client-centered projects. One such project has been with the American Civil Liberties Union Drug Policy Litigation Project during which she devised an advocacy campaign aimed at school board members and superintendents across the US.

Why African Studies
Africa, recognized as the cradle of humanity, is one of the most culturally and environmentally diverse places on the planet; yet it remains largely unknown to people outside its borders. Contemporary Africa boasts rural societies steeped in ancient beliefs, alongside vibrant multicultural urban centers. Whether you are examining the arts, cultural studies, politics, economics, social change, development, or the natural environment, Africa is an ideal setting in which to broaden your intercultural understanding.

Madagascar History
Scientists believe the chunk of land that became Madagascar broke from Africa about 100 million years ago. The island's first settlers were not Africans, however, but Melanesians, who arrived in the 6th century. In succeeding centuries, Madagascar became an important link in the spice trade between Europe and Asia. African, Arab and European merchants visited the island, mixing with the descendants of Madagascar's original Southeast Asian settlers. In time, the island's population split into more than a dozen tribes, the most powerful of which was the Merina, who ruled the central highlands. European and American pirates were a force in the early 1700s - they made the island a haven for those who plundered the merchant ships ferrying goods between Europe and Asia.

European and American pirates were a force in the early 1700s - they made the island a haven for those who plundered the merchant ships ferrying goods between Europe and Asia. It wasn't until the 19th century that Madagascar was united into one country by the king of the Merina. His administration ruled until 1883, when the French invaded the country and turned it into a protectorate. In the following decades, the French suppressed a number of uprisings by the Malagasy, and Madagascar did not gain independence until 1960. Following the departure of the French, the island was controlled by a series of autocratic rulers who plundered the country and ruined its economy. The first free elections were not held until the 1990s.
