Whole-wheat berries are a part of the holistic lifestyle concept of a macrobiotic diet, which is heavily based on seasonal fruits, vegetables, grains and seafood. The word "macrobiotics" is derived from "long life" in Greek.
ASHEVILLE, N.C. — In an age of low-carb diets and high-protein energy bars, Michael Rossoff is an anomaly. In his world, vegetables reign over excessive meat. He does not "got milk" — and counsels his clients to do the same.
"I haven't eaten red meat in 30 years," Rossoff said in a recent interview. "I suppose the (Atkins) people haven't made much money off of me." At 58, Rossoff is energetic, clear-eyed, smooth-skinned and "probably 25 pounds lighter" than his twin brother, who hasn't adopted the diet.
Macrobiotics was brought to the United States from Japan five decades ago by Michio and Aveline Kushi, founders of the Kushi Institute near Boston. Rossoff studied for years with the Kushis and, as a senior macrobiotic counselor, draws a steady following at workshops. Greek origin The word "macrobiotics" is derived from "long life" in Greek. It is a holistic lifestyle concept anchored by a diet heavy on vegetables, grains, beans, soups and the bounty of the sea — including fish and sea vegetables. It eschews refined sugar, red meat, dairy, white flour, antibiotic-laced poultry and eggs.

Macrobiotics
Macrobiotics is an all encompassing philosophy of living that uses diet as a primary focus. The macrobiotic understanding has its roots in Oriental philosophy such as Taoism and Chinese Medicine and advocates living in harmony with nature, especially through eating natural foods. Originally from Japan, there is a noticeable Japanese influence on the way macrobiotics is currently being taught and practiced. Yet, the philosophy of macrobiotics includes encompassing principles that apply to all cultures. Macrobiotics is a complete philosophy of life. Macrobiotics teaches principles of endless change, complimentary opposites, and a universal order, as understood by ancient and modern philosophers. Balance is a primary principle, the wisdom of unity and harmony between seemingly conflicting differences. In regards to diet, where veganism and vegetarianism are merely concerned with not eating various animal products, the macrobiotic philosophy actually discusses what to eat , including the quality of food, cooking methods, cooking equipment, and even covers proper chewing. Organic and whole foods are strongly advised, along with the correct balance of amounts and varieties of food. In this way, macrobiotics moves beyond an overly simplistic or exclusionary dietary practice into a vast understanding of healthy living.

What is Macrobiotics?
Macrobiotics is the art and science of health and longevity through the study and understanding of the relation and interactions between ourselves, the foods we eat, the lifestyles we choose to lead, and the environments in which we live.
The macrobiotic approach is based on the view that we are the result of and are continually influenced by our total environment, which ranges from the foods we eat and our daily social interactions to the climate and geography in which we live. In considering all factors that influence our lives, the macrobiotic approach to health and healing views sickness as the natural attempt of the body to return to a more harmonious and dynamic state with the natural environment. As what we choose to eat and drink and how we live our lives are primary environmental factors that influence our health and create who we are, the macrobiotic approach emphasizes the importance of proper dietary and lifestyle habits. The macrobiotic approach is based on principles, theories and practices that have been known to philosophers, scholars, and physicians throughout history.

90. Introducing Macrobiotics
Introduction To macrobiotics for Health Healing. macrobiotics is a simple, natural approach for creating a healthy life. macrobiotics In Words Deeds.
http://www.michaelrossoff.com/intro-macrobiotics.htm
Home Articles Counseling Teaching
Macrobiotics is a simple, natural approach for creating a healthy life. By addressing the central importance of daily eating, we can begin to regain control of our lives. Food is basic to life and life depends on our relationship to nature that has brought forth these foods. So our eating needs to be adjusted by season of the year, where we live, the type of work we do and more. For best health, the majority of our foods needs to be vegetable quality. Animal foods like fish and poultry and eggs may be incorporated by those who desire or need these animal foods. Other forms of animal meats are avoided for best health. Macrobiotics seeks an intuitive balance between foods that contract and foods that expand our bodies. For example, salt contracts and sugars expands. By paying attention to this fundamental concept, we can find a simplier balance in our overall life, instead of feeling compulsions and extreme cravings. Foods heal, so healing is bite-by-bite and meal-by-meal and day-by-day and soon our blood is changing and then the cells, tissues and organs. Our natural body wisdom knows what and where it is troubled and will undertake healing as it strengthens. Along the way, the body must cleanse itself of toxins and congestions which have accumulated over many years. This too is part of our healing.

Here You will find answers to these questions: The standard macrobiotics diet does not work for some people. Why? What are Yin and Yang in macrobiotics? ... Macrobiotics is not a cult The standard macrobiotics diet does not work for some people. Why? The standard macrobiotic diet developed over the years is general and not for everyone. Your own health condition, especially if it is a serious condition, might require you to do more research into what foods are currently right for you, which means digging deep into the macrobiotic concepts of yin and yang and balance. It would also mean experimenting for a long time with foods to see how each affects your body. Or we can help and save you time and a lot of pain and effort. Macrobiotics and tuberculosis In November of 2003 I had a 61 year old tuberculosis patient come to me from Spain after having been subjected to two periods of long conventional treatments without much success. She also knew about macrobiotics and tried to follow it randomly on her own for about a year without any good results. After 60 days of following the strict modified macrobiotic diet that we designed for her, her tests turned negative and she was elated. In her case she needed to concentrate on certain vegetables and other foods and to avoid others. For example, even leafy greens, which are an essential part of the macrobiotic diet would have made her condition worse. Even the all-healing pumpkins, which are highly prized in macrobiotics, would have made her condition worse. However, pumpkins are excellent for other illnesses. We have also seen many cases of typhoid fever, gangrene and other stubborn infections and illnesses which were cured using selected macrobiotic foods. In the eyes of these patients the macrobiotics cure always seems miraculous.

Dont miss this small, pocket-sized volume if you need a thorough introduction to the principles and philosophy of macrobiotics. An easy read, keep it in your purse or jacket pocket to peruse when you have a few spare minutes.
Pocket Guide to Macrobiotics > Customer Review #2: Im so glad I found this! This book provides a great deal of information on beginning and sustaining a macrobiotic diet and is written in a clear, concise manner. It speaks positively about small dietary changes and never stoops to belittling other diets. When I bought the book, I knew absolutely nothing about the macrobiotic way of life. When I put it down, I had a good working knowledge.

    A Guide for the Perplexed
by Charles W. Moore Modern macrobiotics dates from the late 19th century, when a Western-trained Japanese Army doctor named Sagen Ishizuka became frustrated by allopathic medicine's ineffectiveness treating his own chronic illness. He researched traditional Oriental medicine, and developed a therapy he called shoku-yo Although shoku-yo/macrobiotics incorporates certain cosmological concepts common to several Eastern religions, it is not and never was religious in nature. Ohsawa's incorporation of Zen in the title of his first English-language book in 1960 caused no end of misunderstanding, but the prosaic truth is that he was attempting to coat-tail popular interest in Zen Buddhism on U.S. college campuses at the time. Serious Buddhists were not amused. In North America the two main schools of macrobiotics are based in Massachusetts and California respectively. The west coasters tend to be laid-back and intuitive in their approach, while the larger, eastern faction, led by Mr. Kushi, is more systematic and formulaic, although these are broad generalizations. The late George Ohsawa would no doubt be pleased, since his vision of macrobiotics was as a philosophic approach to eating, healing, and living, rather than a rigid orthodoxy. The macrobiotic view is that eating proper varieties and proportions of foods helps us achieve balance and harmony. Therefore, appropriate food choices depend on variables like an individual's health, age, sex, geographic location, physical activity, ancestry, the season, etc. Theoretically, there are as many definitions of a macrobiotic diet as there are people practicing it.

Macrobiotics Macrobiotics The History Of Macrobiotics In the 1880s a Japanese doctor, Sagen Ishizuka, found that he could treat many common health problems with a diet based on wholegrain cereals and vegetables, and without rice and refined sugar products. He kept case histories and published his ideas in two books. In 1910 the Japanese writer George Ohsawa put these ideas into practise and claimed that the diet had cured his Tuberculosis. Ohsawa went on to develop a whole dietary system based on Ishizuka’s methods, which he named Macrobiotics – from Greek words meaning ‘large’ and ‘life’, as he believed that it could make everyone healthy enough to enjoy life to the full.
It goes without saying that all aspects of healthy eating should always be encouraged, taking into account the wide Varity of digestive problems that can become a part of M.E. Therefore Macrobiotics is a wonderful example of eating your way to inner harmony and health. My aim for this article is to educate you this fascinating method so that Macrobiotics simply becomes a way of life for you.
‘Macrobiotics is based on the Chinese Yin and Yang, two qualities that compliment and balance each other, which are held to be part of every natural object.
