    Definition:
Macrobiotics, created Sagen Ishizuka in the 19th century and made popular in the United States by Michio Kushi, is based upon the same principles of yin and yang as is acupuncture . But, instead of attempting to regulate the flow of ch'i through needles, macrobiotics involves the proper use of diet. According to macrobiotics, every food has some essential "yingness" or "yangness." When a person eats too many of one type, that will result in mental of physical problems. Correcting this imbalance, whether that imbalance is created by improper diet or other forces, requires adjusting one's diet to increase the yingness or yangness of the foods they eat, depending upon what they need. It is possible for a macrobiotic diet to be healthy (because it relies heavily on whole grains, vegetables, and beans), but only by coincidence - foods are not, after all, chosen for any nutritional value. The original macrobiotic diet was less healthy, however, and some people came near death when they followed it strictly.

Jack Raso, M.S., R.D. Laying on that stainless steel table and getting these little lines drawn on me, I felt like a piece of beef. I felt like I had no control, when they were getting ready to do radiation. And the chemo. I went . . . to see the oncologist, and seeing the other people in the waiting room, [I wondered], 'Man, is that what I'm going to be looking like?' I mean, they didn't look well. They did not look healthy. . . . If I had done chemo and radiation, I know for a fact I wouldn't be sitting here and having energy with you right now. The speaker, whom I shall call John, was a tall, thin, youthful macrobiotic convert in his late forties who said he used to run about four to five miles a day. He was driving me to the Kushi Institute in Becket, Massachusetts, to attend the Michio Kushi Seminar for Medical Professionals on June 20-25, 1989. John said his cancer had been diagnosed in November 1988. A week later, friends gave him two books whose authors said they had recovered from cancer while following a macrobiotic regimen. Two days later, after reading the books, John flew to Massachusetts for a consultation with Michio Kushi. I asked what Kushi had done. John responded:

The dietary discipline of macrobiotics was developed by the Japanese philosophy student George Ohsawa (Nyoiti Sakurazawa) and is based on the idea that harmonious balance must exist between the yin and yang forces of life - even in diet. This form of eating is often prescribed by complementary therapists, naturopaths, holistic healers and herbalists and is said to be beneficial in treating a variety of ailments and diseases through a limited diet and is also said to provide a spiritual foundation. All foods are classified as either Yin or Yang and are not classified by nutritional value. In broad general terms a macrobiotic diet calls for about 50 percent of kilojoules from whole grains (which are Yin and Yang balanced), 30 percent from vegetables, 10 percent from beans and sea vegetables, 5 percent from fish, shellfish, fruits and nuts and 5 percent from soup made with grains, vegetables and fermented soya beans (miso). The drinking of huge volumes of liquid is not advocated since it is believed that excess liquid places a strain on the kidneys and back and can lead to fatigue. All processed foods are banned and coffee and spices are discouraged since they are said to excite the nervous system.

Contact Macrobiotics 30 years of a semi-macrobiotic lifestyle Of all the body-mind-spirit interests, enthusiasms and obsessions I have had over the years, macrobiotics has probably made the biggest impact. My initial encounter with it through a rather extreme paperback book in 1975 was the beginning of a journey of personal transformation that continues to this day. That first book I read talked about (amongst other things) personal freedom, universal compassion, everyday eating as preventative medicine, living long and happily and embracing misfortune, having all your dreams come true, regular sex until an old age, yin and yang in all of life and applied to the cooking of whole grains and vegetables. In retrospect rather curiously for a 14 year old, I was hooked and immediately began experimenting with the ideas and recipes in the book. My father and stepmother had to put up with rather a lot as I began my first culinary experiments, including burnt saucepans and flatulence! Both these problems were gradually resolved...

"Macrobiotics is a dangerous fad diet which, in certain cases, can lead to death." The above statement comes from a nutrition textbook. Many doctors, nutritionists and dieticians learnt in their nutrition studies that macrobiotics is dangerous. And so, understandably, they cling to this view without making much effort to find out the truth about macrobiotics - and the background as to how this view arose in the first place. As a result, followers of macrobiotics - especially those with cancer and other serious illnesses - are often warned by their doctors and other medical professionals that "macrobiotics is dangerous". This idea arose during the 1950s and early 1960s, when macrobiotics was first introduced to the West from Japan.

A few macrobiotic friends have studied at the Kushi Institutes in Becket, USA and Amsterdam, Netherlands, as well as the Vega Study Centre in California, USA. Thousands more have attended lectures and workshops given by both Singaporean and foreign macrobiotic teachers. The term "macrobiotic" describes a holistic lifestyle which seeks to empower people to take control of their lives and to educate them to make healthy lifestyle choices and decisions. It empowers individuals to establish awareness, health, and harmony in their lives, personal relationships, communities, and environment.
Macrobiotics is a holistic philosophy that aims to achieve balance and peace in people's lives through awareness and common sense living. Common sense living includes getting enough rest, eating the way nature intended, being kind and respectful towards oneself and others, and respecting the environment.
Macrobiotics is now popularly known for and has been well-publicized for its success in curing disease, most notably cancer . While a very strict version of the macrobiotic diet can eliminate many cancers, a more varied diet based on whole grains, vegetables, beans, and other organic natural foods is recommended by most macrobiotic practitioners. By eating the way nature intended, you not only support the ecosystem, but also enhance your own health. To test this yourself, read our

High fiber is generally accepted as a tenet, based on organically grown food. This philosophy is a commitment to a particular regime that involves many considerations that are brought into balance. Including, being aware of our own individual part that we play in this physical world, and accordingly achieve a broader, fuller sense of Self in relation to the Whole. Balance is encouraged within ourselves, with the food the body imbibes, and with the world. In this way a synchrony between these diverse elements is established, resulting in a unified way of living. Most importantly, a synchrony is established between the practitioner and the food....from the Glossary at HealersOfTheWorld.com

    Macrobiotics: Some Controversial Aspects
    Some Explanations
You Decide...? It may well to be wary of the oft-quoted assertion that "macrobiotics is not nutritionally balanced or not really complete" particularly because it comes from the high-tech dairy and meat interests. George Osawa, the father of macrobiotics in the West said "eat what you like – macrobiotics does not forbid anything". Granted Osawa proposed a series of extremely fundamental brown-rice cleansing diets and these may well be useful for acetic meditation or for cleansing toxins from people, at least for limited periods of time. Osawa was himself said to have survived the Japanese military prison-system during the Second World War, by living almost entirely on plain boiled brown rice which the guards allowed his wife to bring into the prison since they regarded such food as insufficient. Accordingly, they permitted brown rice since it was intended that Osawa waste away and die. The macrobiotic diet constitutes the core of the approach that we used to heal Hideh’s cancer and are continuing the regeime. The diet may be summarised as 55% (or more) whole (at least starting as whole) grains per day, minimizing (but not eliminating) nightshades, miso soup with sea vegetables at least once a day, no overloading of either vegetable or fish protein – that is not much more that 1/10 th Last but not least I was previously a "dumb" vegetarian-fishatarian. I feel great now, no indigestion whatsoever, and I eat a 4-grain fresh ground porridge every morning. I think, for myself, that macrobiotics (as now practiced ) is a fundamental basis on which to plan a personal survival strategy. When we went to Paris recently we hunted up all the macrobiotic restaurants to eat there, to see what they were like and how they managed their menus. Besides this, as soon as I started to follow the diet seriously I remembered that it was the way I used to eat in other lives.
