Macrobiotics          Macrobiotics is a healthy, holistic way of living a balanced lifestyle. It is a vast subject, but basically comes down to the fact that the world (the earth and all thereon) is a constantly changing holistic system that is ever striving for balance. It not only covers diet, but balance in body, soul and spirit, which is the main theme of this Wholesome Balance website. Many people in the West do not truly understand the Macrobiotic diet. Some think it is mainly grains and salt. Others think it is just rice and vegetables. This is partly due to a small faction of the main movement that got rather fanatical, which gave it a bad name in some circles. They obviously did not understand it, because the macrobiotic way is one of non-fanaticism, and it is still extremely valuable and helpful throughout the world.          The actual word macro-biotic originates from the Greek and means "great or large life". It is based on The Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine, the oldest-known book of Chinese medicine. It is attributed to Huang Ti, the legendary Yellow Emperor (born c. 2704 b.c.), but was probably not written down until about 500 b.c. The Yellow Emperor is believed to have ruled China during a golden age and is considered the ancestor of all Chinese people. It was developed and made popular in this century in the West by people like George Ohsawa, Michio Kushi and Herman Aihara.

A dietary wellness system based on whole grains, vegetables, and fish. According to practitioners, the macrobiotic way of life is holistic, taking into account all aspects of human life, and acknowledging the inter-relationship between body, mind, and spirit. Their philosophy states that, through the practice of the macrobiotic way of life, responsibility is taken for our health and actions, and that the choices we make, even seemingly simple ones such as which foods to eat, and what cleaning and body-care products to use, affect the world to a much larger degree than many people realize. The Macrobiotic view also takes into account various other factors such as heritage, climate, season, age, and sex. Each person is unique, and therefore needs to make different choices to balance their present needs. As we continue to practice macrobiotics, our needs and some of our circumstances change, thus necessitating other adjustments to our food and lifestyle. See alternative medicine Related videos

What is Macrobiotics? Macrobiotics
is a way of living with respect for the physical, biological, emotional, mental, ecological and spiritual order of our daily lives. Beginning with a reorientation of everyday eating, using whole natural foods of highest quality and simple more traditional methods of preparation. Macrobiotic living means striving to learn the art of balance in everything we do. The Macrobiotic idea places special emphasis on conscious diet because regulating your daily eating and drinking is the most basic, practical way to change your own life condition. The food you eat becomes your blood, affecting the quality of your cells, tissues organs and your mind. Properly nourished, your body, heart and mind can more easily cleanse and renew themselves. This can be a wonderful experience, and an opportunity to learn more about yourself and the process of natural healing. Macrobiotics is a revival of eating the simple, natural foods that sustained and vitalised our ancestors. It includes the commonsense principles of eating foods that grow in your climatic zone, eating fresh foods in their seasons, and preparing foods thoughtfully to enhance their nutritional content and digestibility.

Diet is one of the Main cause of disease
This course will teach you what food to eat to be healthy and what food to avoid to regain health A story:
As I was writing my Newsletter today, I had a phone call from Ula Woodbridge one of my German client. Ula was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in the Spring of 2001. She was told she was dying and only had a few months to live. No chance of survival she was told. She came to see me in August 2001 as she wanted to join one of my trips to the Philippines . She benefited from the healing treatments when she was in the Philippines and on my recommendation started a very strict diet as soon as we came back to England. I told her precisely what food to avoid and which to eat if she wanted to exceed her prognosis of January 2002 at best for her death. Ula followed the diet very strictly and today (10 March 2003) the news was that she is completely clear of any tumour and that her blood count is improving all the time. Her doctors are completely baffled as they did not expect her to still be alive. Ula however is not. She has understood that her recovery is due to the elimination of toxic food in her diet and the supply of energising food.

The gate is always open to a better way, to knowledge, to wisdom, to balance, to whatever constitutes wholeness in our unique human perception. There is no lock on the door. Whether we choose to enter into that better place is largely up to each of us. Passing through the door requires us to leave fear at the threshold so that we can step "into the light." What Is It? Macrobiotics is a philosophy embracing the idea that living one's life within the natural order will ultimately lead to good health, happiness, and an enhanced appreciation for the constantly changing nature of all things. It is based on the ancient Chinese principles of yin and yang, which represent opposite yet complementary forces believed to exist in all aspects of life and the universe. Things that are yin are flexible, fluid, and cool; things that are yang are strong, dynamic, and hot. According to macrobiotic theory, illness is the result of an imbalance in these two forces. Therefore, macrobiotic practitioners attempt to treat ailments by bringing yin and yang back into balance through diet and lifestyle changes. Although the origins of macrobiotics stem from the ancient principles of Eastern medicine, the contemporary basis for it was developed in the late 19th century by a Western-trained Japanese Army doctor named Sagen Ishizuka (1850-1910). Dr. Ishizuka had become frustrated with allopathic (or Western) medicine's ineffectiveness in treating his own cancer, and he decided to try to cure himself by adopting a diet of brown rice, soybeans, fish, miso soup (made with soybean paste), sea vegetables, and other Oriental foods. He called this therapy shoku-yo

Nearly 20 years ago, Elizabeth Miksa learned she had cervical cancer. From her limited treatment choices she opted to eat, turning to macrobiotics - a 19th-century Japanese diet-healing theory then known as shoku-yu with roots extending back to Hippocrates himself.
However, the medical establishment considers macrobiotics as an alternative treatment for cancer to be unproven and even life-threatening. Despite concerns about the diet even back in the 1980s, Miksa immersed herself in the lifestyle - taking classes to cook macrobiotically, meditate and de-stress her life - and for a time even ran a cottage business of preparing and delivering macrobiotic meals to others. "It's an extremely difficult way to eat," Miksa says. And for most of us, that's true; a macrobiotic diet emphasizes locally grown organic produce and whole foods - "eating as close to nature as possible," she says - while eliminating dairy, processed foods and sugars, caffeinated and "artificial" beverages and meat, except some types of seafood - mostly white-flesh fish.

    Macrobiotics- A Brief History
The Macrobiotic Way is a school of thought and action, based upon the use of natural (non-synthetic) materials in our fabrics, our homes and our food. Even many naturally occurring ingredients can be hazardous to our health (e.g. hemlock, opium, sodium, lead); therefore, to determine the correct applications for natural materials, they are classified in accordance with the "Unique Principle". The Unique Principle was introduced to the Western world by George Ohsawa (Yukikazu Sakurazawa), a Japanese businessman, teacher and writer. As a teenager, Ohsawa was diagnosed with tuberculosis and was deemed to have little chance of surviving, by the Japanese medical doctors. However, by following the teaching of Sagen Ishizuka, a natural healer who was famous in Japan near the beginning of the 20th century, Ohsawa was able to heal himself. He traveled from Japan to Europe in 1929 and, soon thereafter, began teaching the Unique Principle. The "Principle", itself, employs the ancient oriental practice of Yin and Yang theory, to determine the quality of the materials in our universe. Though all aspects of the environment are important in the macrobiotic way of thinking, there is a special emphasis on food. This is because the food we eat becomes our bodies. Food turns into us. Therefore, special attention is paid to the quality of that portion of the environment which we consume. All things, including food, can be classified into a "more yin" or a "more yang" category. Generally speaking, yin (pronounced 'yeen') foods tend to be more sugary and/or watery and/or cold and/or tropical in origin. Yang (pronounced 'yahn') foods tend to be more meaty and/or dry and/or cooked and/or polar, in nature.

It has been shown that cancer can be prevented by altering our eating habits and lifestyle in a way that encompasses the principles of macrobiotics. Outline I. Introduction II. Dietary History in America A. Traditionally: Food as a primary factor in all areas of life B. Early 19 th century to present: Cancer rates increase as diet includes more refined foods C. Low cancer rates in cultures not affected by Western diet III. Introduction of Macrobiotics: A holistic approach to eating and living A. History B. Cancer Fighting Foods C. Environmental Harmony D. Yin and Yang E. Ecological Awareness IV. Modern-day Approach to Cancer V. Conclusion
Introduction Traditionally, the American diet has been defined by meat, potatoes, and white bread. As of late, Americans are gaining awareness about the importance of a diet that is more nutritious than meat and potatoes. This is partly due to highly publicized information on foods that claim to be beneficial to our overall health. Articles and news reports let us know about the most current study on diet and how it relates to athletic ability, mental acuity and general well-being. Another area that has received much attention is how diet is connected to disease prevention. Many medical reports are suggesting diets that are low in fat and high in fiber. And more health care practitioners than ever are recommending that their clients eat more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and soy products. Vegetarianism, eating very few or no animal products, has become very accepted in a country that is made up of mostly meat-eaters.

Misogi Diet The macrobiotic approach to nutrition classifies foods according to their biochemical and biological effects, taking into consideration factors such as:
    • The chemical composition of food - especially the relative sodium (Na) content versus that of potassium (K).
    • Origin of a particular food - either animal of vegetable quality.
    • Environmental influences - such as climate, season and soil condition.
    • Factors in cooking - such as time, heat and pressure.
Foods can be generally categorized into those which are more expansive and which produce a more relaxing tendency; those which are more contractive and produce a more tightening tendency; and those which are more centered and which, when eaten in balanced proportions, have the effect of harmonizing our condition with the surrounding environment. Borrowing the terminology from several thousand years of Oriental tradition, macrobiotics refers to all foods as having complimentary yet opposite tendencies of yin (expansion) and yang (contraction). Among foods, some are at the extreme of yin or yang, while some carry a more even balance of both factors. Achieving this more balanced condition has been the goal of most spiritual teachings throughout the ages. Common food items are generally classified as follows: Centrally balanced: Whole cereal grains (brown rice, whole wheat, millet, barley, oats, rye, buckwheat, corn, etc.); beans; local vegetables; sea vegetables; locally grown seasonal fruits, fish and shellfish; seeds and nuts; non-aromatic and non-stimulant beverages; naturally processed vegetable oils such as sesame and corn; naturally processed seasonings such as miso, tamari soy sauce, unrefined sea salt.

    What is Macrobiotics?
Macrobiotics amounts to finding our physiological limitations and trying to live within them. This is the cultivation of humbleness. When we think that we can do anything we want, we become arrogant. This arrogance causes sickness. When we are living within our physical limitations, then our spirituality is free. Macrobiotics seeks freedom in spirit. Freedom exists in our spirit so we can think anything. But biologically, physiologically we are unfree. We can wish to eat anything we want, but we cannot do it.
Disciplining physical unfreedom is the foundation of spiritual freedom. God didn't give us unlimited biological freedom, but appreciating and taking into consideration our unfree physical condition leads us to infinite spiritual freedom."
