A Kushi Seminar for Professionals (1989)
Jack Raso, M.S., R.D. Laying on that stainless steel table and getting these little lines drawn on me, I felt like a piece of beef. I felt like I had no control, when they were getting ready to do radiation. And the chemo. I went . . . to see the oncologist, and seeing the other people in the waiting room, [I wondered], 'Man, is that what I'm going to be looking like?' I mean, they didn't look well. They did not look healthy. . . . If I had done chemo and radiation, I know for a fact I wouldn't be sitting here and having energy with you right now. The speaker, whom I shall call John, was a tall, thin, youthful macrobiotic convert in his late forties who said he used to run about four to five miles a day. He was driving me to the Kushi Institute in Becket, Massachusetts, to attend the Michio Kushi Seminar for Medical Professionals on June 20-25, 1989. John said his cancer had been diagnosed in November 1988. A week later, friends gave him two books whose authors said they had recovered from cancer while following a macrobiotic regimen. Two days later, after reading the books, John flew to Massachusetts for a consultation with Michio Kushi. I asked what Kushi had done. John responded:

You'll sleep in all-natural sheets, dried by the sun and wind, under down comforters on cool nights. You'll wake up to the aroma of freshly baked bread. We keep a vegetarian kitchen and gladly accommodate vegan, macrobiotic, gluten-free, fat-free and other special diets. We are located on the "quiet side" of Mount Desert Island near some of the loveliest and least traversed sites of Acadia National Park yet only thirty minutes from the bustling port of Bar Harbor. Hiking, swimming, canoeing or kayaking are just minutes away as well as nature cruises and mail-boat and ferry rides to nearby picturesque islands. Nearby Bass Harbor and Southwest Harbor, home to boat builders and fishermen, retain much of the traditional flavor of Maine coastal villages and provide a tranquil alternative to the Island's more traveled east side.
We look forward to making your visit a memorable one.

The New Macrobiotics
Macrobiotics Today, January/February 1995, Vol. 35, No. 1
"The New Macrobiotics" Bill Tara
The last ten years have shown a renewed sense of inquiry into the shared beliefs of the macrobiotic community. A questioning of dogma and more serious reflection of experience, rather than theory, are forces which are reshaping what macrobiotics will be in the future. It is a time of rich potential and Macrobiotics Today has been the leading forum for much of this discussion. Recent issues have raised important questions for all of us involved in macrobiotic practice and education. In the September/October 1994 issue the theme was "Macrobiotics: Japanese Traditional vs. Contemporary American," certainly a valuable area of exploration.
While reading the issue I was aware of two things which were missing for me: The first of these is, what really distinguishes Contemporary Macrobiotics from the macrobiotics of the past? The second is, how much of the New Macrobiotics is a reaction to its Japanese origins. With the exception of an excellent article by Tom Monte, it did not seem to me that any of the articles addressed these fundamental questions. Instead, the authors seemed unanimous in expressing the opinion that most of the differences of opinion in macrobiotics are simply cultural, I disagree.
Over the past five years I have used the term The New Macrobiotics and Contemporary Macrobiotics in promoting some of the courses at Nova Healing Arts, as a way of distinguishing what I teach in my lectures and seminars from some of the ideas expressed in macrobiotic literature and taught at many of the macrobiotic educational centers. I have done this so that I would not misrepresent our programs to potential students. The distinction has to do with the vision I hold of macrobiotics in the future and which I feel is shared by many in the macrobiotic community.

'Being And The River', by Les Wittlin
So many things happen in a person's life. Mine was no different. looking back on growing up, I realize that the summer season gave me my most memorable experiences, the bulk of which were quite happy. Even as I marched into adulthood, that time of year gave me the greatest joy in the simplest of ways.
My birthday precedes the first day of spring by a few days. 1998 was ~ 50th year to heaven. I knew that I had much to be thankful for, but I was dislocated in a way and to an extent that I cannot really explain. As spring wore on that year, it seemed that even summer was going to fail me. The two previous years had taken an enormous toll on my family.
In June of 1996, my 34 year old nephew and law partner had died of cancer after several years of horrible suffering. He left two infant children and a devastated wife.
In July of 1997, my wife's father, with whom I had been very close, died of cancer after several months of pain and suffering.
In January of 1998, my mother died after a long struggle with Alzheimer's disease. Two months later, my father took a severe heart attack in Florida on the same day I was supposed to leave for a birthday holiday in San Francisco. I spent the next three weeks in two different Florida hospitals, helping my father survive (which he did).
In May of 1998, after much travail, but still unexpectedly, my older sister died of a rare neurological disorder, only two days after her 59th' birthday.

    Macrobiotics and the Macrobiotic Diet
Macrobiotics has its roots in ancient Chinese food science, Food Energetics. The macrobiotic diet is based on daily cooking of fresh wholesome meals to help achieve a holistic balance or harmony within ourselves and the environment around us. The approach is holistic, taking into consideration all aspects of the person such as body, mind, spirit, soul and emotions. Macrobiotics uses wholesome, unrefined foods, processed by traditional methods. The standard macrobiotic diet consists of whole grains and whole grain products: locally grown (ideally, organically grown) vegetables, beans and sea vegetables, tofu, tempeh, Seitan, Fu, soups and condiments, and supplementary foods including beverages, fish, and desserts. Macrobiotic cooking is an art in itself. It takes your mood, as well as your personal lifestyle, into consideration, and much emphasis is placed on aesthetics of presentation as well as the combination of all flavors and colors. The macrobiotic diet moves with the seasons. During the hot summer months, when the body needs foods that provide a cooling effect, cooking methods become lighter and shorter, stir-frying, Steaming, and light boiling are the main cooking methods for the season. Vegetables are cut finer or in matchsticks for quicker cooking. Salt and Tamari are used in smaller amounts. During the colder months when the body needs more warmth and energy, longer cooking methods such as casseroles, baked dishes and hearty soups are used. A bit more oil, seasonings, condiments like gomasio, and sea salt (only used in cooking) are used since they are warming the body. Vegetables are cut into chunks for longer cooking. Buckwheat, soba noodles and fried rice are suited for this time.

    You say that
Macrobiotics is a way of life characterized by a special diet said to optimize the balance of yin and yang. George Ohsawa (1893-1966) started the macrobiotics movement with the publication of his Zen Macrobiotics in 1965. Michio Kushi popularized the movement in the United States. The basics of the diet itself were established by Sagen Ishizuka, a 19th century Japanese army doctor. It's also a fact that the expression macrobiotics was first coined by a German Dr. Christoph von Hufeland (please see Basic Education: A Brief History of Macrobiotics pages 2 and 4 of the macrobiotic newsletter Non Credo Meanwhile, in the 18th century West, the german doctor Dr. Christoph von Hufeland (physician to the philosopher/poet Goethe) published the book Makrobiotik: Die Kunst das Mensliche Leben zu Verlängern (”Macrobiotics: The Art of Prolonging Human Life”) in the late 1780s, which was later translated into English in 1796. Hufeland made recommendations to follow a simple grain-and-vegetable diet with good chewing habits, promoted exercise and self-healing, recommended breast-feeding for children, and warned of the dangers of eating meat and sugar. (Jack, 141)

    Macrobiotics
Within the general parameters of the diet, it is adjusted for specific conditions. ITP is an expansive disease (blood literally expanding through the vessel walls). Therefore, in macrobiotic theory, people with ITP should eat foods that are more contractive to bring them into balance. These include foods that are well cooked and a bit salty. They should also eliminate or reduce foods that are expansive. These include all sugars, including fruit, and raw foods. This is a general example. The actual application of these principals varies by individual and is much more complex and sophisticated. From another vantage point, the macrobiotic diet could be beneficial to those who have ITP because it recommends the elimination of many foods that cause allergic reactions. This reduces the allergic load on the body and reduces strain on the immune system. It also eliminates foods that create strong reactions in the body, like white sugar. This reduces stress and therefore, promotes healing. It eliminates foods that promote free radical damage like white flour or foods processed with nitrites. Stress and the proliferation of free radicals have been linked to causing autoimmune diseases. It also helps balance blood PH. (acid/alkaline level). Most disease conditions are associated with a blood and body fluid level that is overly acidic.
