Do you use Windows or Macintosh? Linux? Which is better? These questions can quickly polarize a group of people into separate camps and invite passionate exchanges, or for the non-computer users in a group, invite revealing responses like "Huh?" Why do many people feel strongly about the computer operating system they use, and have strong feelings about operating systems they don't? An analogy to languages is appropriate here. What language is better: English or Spanish? Russian or Chinese? Unless you are fluent in both languages, you are unqualified to answer. The same logic applies to computer operating systems. The fact is, however, many people know as much about the "other" operating system as the guy who can just say "taco," "enchilada," and "sopapilla" knows about Spanish. If someone has grown up just speaking English, it may be difficult for them to conceive of a language that would be easier to speak or be more effective at communicating certain things. Yet, some language experts contend that very thing. Bilingual music artist Luis Miguel insists that Spanish is a more romantic language than English, and that is why he still prefers to sing in Spanish. (According to his statements in a Spanish radio interview in 2000.)

Mac OS 8, scheduled for delivery in July 1997, contains a number of significant improvements, including new human-interface features, increased system stability and performance, a PowerPC processor-native Finder, tighter integration of Internet access through panel-based "assistants," Personal Web Sharing, and the ability to run Java applets and programs through Mac OS Run Time for Java Mac OS X ("X" for 10) is based on

    Operating System Update
by Gavin Eadie, ITD The Macintosh Operating System (MacOS) allows you to organize your files, print, move between applications, connect to networks, and much more. It's something most Macintosh users take for granted. Updates and revisions to it are usually greeted with one of two responses: "GreatI wondered when they'd fix that problem," or "What a hasslemy computer works fine now, and I don't want to be bothered with this." System 7.5 Update 2 offers some nice features and fixes some problems. Read on to find out if those features and fixes justify updating for you.
    All the Numbers!
Update 1, released in 1994, took System 7.5 to 7.5.1; the MacOS released with the new Macintoshes in the fall of 1995 was numbered 7.5.2; and Update 2 will advance the numbers to 7.5.3. Note that Update 2 contains all that was in Update 1, so there is no need to apply Update 1 before applying Update 2 to System 7.5. You will be able to tell what System you are running by selecting the "About this Macintosh..." item at the top of the Apple menu. After Update 2 is installed, it will look something like the screen shot below.

Operating Systems Widely Used on Personal Computers
The Operating System of a computer must be considered when selecting Assistive Technology to be used to for accessing the computer, or accessing information displayed upon the computer monitor. It can be very frustrating to have purchased an application and learn it is not compatible with the operating system of your computer.
The operating system of a computer performs basic tasks such as: recognizing information from the keyboard and mouse, sending information to the monitor, storing of information to the hard drive, and controlling device peripherals as printers and flatbed scanners.
Operating systems provide the basis for running common applications such as word processors and Internet browsers. Operating systems are also responsible for running Assistive Technology applications such as screen magnifiers, and applications that read text aloud.

This operating system introduced nearly 5 years ago, made a clean break from previous Macintosh operating systems. OSX is based on BSD Unix. For all practical purposes, OSX is a Unix operating system built for Macintosh hardware based on the G3 processor or higher. What makes OSX unique is the very pretty "Aqua" graphical environment. Aqua is the desktop interface that people will use when interacting with OSX. It is from Aqua that you will run applications such as AppleWorks, Adobe InDesign iTunes, iMovie, iPhoto, iDVD, iChat, Safari, Quark Xpress and thousands of others. The padagrim for using OSX is the same as all previous versions of the Mac OS, in that you point, click and drag to do things on the Aqua desktop. Longtime Mac users will find that Aqua has either relocated, removed and added many functions to the system. It would pay if you read the basic Aqua manual that comes with your Macintosh before getting started with OSX. In addition to Aqua, there is also "Darwin." Darwin is the command line part of OSX which you can access by going to the terminal application from within Aqua. Launch the terminal and you are greeted with a command prompt.

Mac OS 9 and Mac OS X
Should I upgrade to Mac OS X or should I stick with Mac OS 9?
In March 2001, Apple released a brand-new operating system based on UNIX. This new operating system, called Mac OS X (pronounced MAC-OH-ESS-TEN), has many features of a new, modern operating systemincluding good memory management, and resistance to crashing. Apple has also tried to keep the familiar look and feel of the Macintosh in place to ease the switch from the old system to the new one.
What are native Mac OS X applications?
Since the underpinnings of Mac OS X are much different than Mac OS 9, applications must be rewritten by the software companies in order to have them run natively. Native Mac OS X applications can take advantage of most or all of the new features that this new operating system has to offer. Native Mac OS X applications are sometimes called Cocoa or Carbon applications.
    What are Classic applications?
Mac OS 9 applications that haven't been rewritten specifically for Mac OS X must run in "Classic" mode in order for them to run in Mac OS X. Basically, this just loads Mac OS 9 within Mac OS X (so you have to make sure you keep Mac OS 9 installed even after upgrading); the Classic applications will run within this Mac OS 9 environment.
