Operating System Options Introduction To Operating Sytems A Brief History Of PC Operating Systems Introduction To Windows Windows Millenium Edition ... Linux Overview
Introduction to Operating Sytems In the Wizard of Oz, Dorothy hopes the all-powerful wizard will grant her wish to go home. But when she looks behind the curtain it's revealed that the wizard is a clever yet ordinary man whose magical powers are no greater than her own. Today's PCs have the ability to make a lot of our computing wishes come true. The fact that one machine can do everything from playing arcade quality games to creating music CD's, is a testament to the accomplishments of modern computing. Unfortunately every crash, incompatible driver and bug fix reminds us that PCs and their operating systems are far from magical. The operating system (OS) is the most important program that runs on a computer. It performs basic tasks like recognizing input from the keyboard, sending images to the display, keeping track of files, and controlling peripheral devices such as disk drives and printers.

Mac OS
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Mac OS is Apple Computer 's operating system for Apple Macintosh computers. Mac OS was the first commercially successful operating system which used a graphical user interface - although early versions did not use that, or any, name. The Macintosh team included Bill Atkinson Jef Raskin and Andy Hertzfeld There are a variety of views on how the Macintosh was developed, and where the underlying ideas originated. While the connection between the Macintosh and the Alto project at Xerox PARC has been established in the historical record, the earlier contributions of Ivan Sutherland 's Sketchpad and Doug Engelbart 's On-Line System are no less significant. See History of the GUI , and Apple v. Microsoft The Mac OS can be divided into two families of operating systems:
  • An older and now unsupported "classic" Mac OS (the system that shipped with the first Mac in 1984 and its descendants, culminating with Mac OS 9 The newer Mac OS X (pronounced oh-es-ten). Mac OS X incorporates elements of BSD Unix OpenStep , and Mac OS 9 . Its low-level Unix -based foundation

    Support for Macintosh Operating Systems
Peter Kiewit Computing Services currently provides support for Macintosh Operating Systems (OS) versions 8.6 and higher. If you are running a computer with a version of the Macintosh operating system prior to version 8.6, contact the Computing Help Desk at 646-2999 or your division's computing support office to determine if your computer can be upgraded to a supported version. Mac OS X is the operating system that is now shipping on all Macintosh computers purchased from Apple Computer. It is a UNIX-based system that provides additional stability to your computer. This new operating system is very different from earlier versions of the operating system, and many software applications, as well as the software needed to run peripherals such as printers, zip drives, and external drives, need to be updated by the vendor of that software in order to be used on Mac OS X computers. Please contact the Computing Help Desk or your division's computing support office before upgrading to the latest operating system to ensure that applications or devices that you rely on will work with the upgraded operating system. In addition, the Computing Help Desk or your division's computing support office can tell you about other software that is available for the newest Macintosh operating system. For example, Dartmouth has entered into an agreement with Microsoft that allows Dartmouth faculty, staff, and students to purchase some Microsoft products at a significantly reduced price. This includes software that Microsoft has developed for the Macintosh. If you are interested in having the Microsoft Office suite of software (

Updating the Macintosh Operating System Using the Software Update feature of System Preferences, you can get updates immediately or schedule when Mac OS checks for updates. Because some updates are prerequisites for others, you may need to use Software Update more than once to get all desired updates.
    Update now
To get updates immediately, follow these steps:
  • Choose System Preferences from the Apple Menu. Choose Software Update from the View menu. Click Update Now. In the Software Update window, select the items you want to install, then click Install. Enter an Admin user name and password. After the update is complete, restart the computer if necessary. Repeat these steps to see if more updates are revealed. Because some software updates are prerequisites for others, you may need to repeat these steps several times to complete the software update sequence.
  • Schedule an update
Software Update opens and looks for updates immediately after you log in to your computer on the scheduled day, assuming that you are connected to the Internet. You can set this to happen daily, weekly, monthly, or not at all. Follow these steps to set a schedule:
  • Choose System Preferences from the Apple Menu.

    Windows Operating System
IT currently supports Windows 2000 and Windows XP. Based on research completed in December 2003, Windows XP is the preferred campus Windows operating system. When IT begins support of the next Windows OS (codename "Longhorn", earliest expected release 2006), we will drop support for Windows 2000. We now strongly recommend that all new campus systems be built to run Windows XP.
