Macedonia erupts in new violence
SKOPJE, Macedonia Three policemen have been killed and about 100 Macedonians abducted or held hostage in a sudden escalation of violence in the volatile Balkan country. After the first serious clashes since Macedonia's peace agreement was signed in August its Western overseers were scrambling to contain the crisis before it spiralled out of control and wrecked the accord. "We will do all we can today to calm the situation and get the political process back on track," an EU diplomat told Reuters on Monday. Bloodshed erupted on Sunday after special police units crossed unguarded cease-fire lines and secured an alleged mass grave site for exhumation while arresting a number of former ethnic Albanian guerrillas. EXTRA INFORMATION Macedonia: Hurdles to peace The three policemen who died were members of a special unit called "the Lions," police sources told the Associated Press. Another two policemen were seriously wounded in an ambush by ethnic Albanian rebels near the village of Trebos in the Tetovo area, the sources said.

Web posted at: 5:23 p.m. EDT (2123 GMT)
MORINA, ALBANIA (CNN) The steady influx of refugees from Kosovo into Albania continued Saturday, with about 500 people arriving every hour, officials said. More than 5,000 refugees crossed the Morina checkpoint into Albania from Kosovo's western city of Pec , said the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. Officials with the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe told CNN they've spotted a line of refugees more than six miles long from their vantage point on Albania's border with Kosovo The newly arrived refugees from Pec appeared very emotional and malnourished as they crossed the border, observers said. The UNHCR said the refugees have reported incidents of Serb attacks and mass killings in Pec.

Battles of Alexander's Successors
After Alexander died of some mysterious illness or poison at Babylon in June 323 BC, the bodyguards summoned his principal friends and officers. Perdiccas placed on the empty throne the ring Alexander had given him while dying and suggested they wait to see if the pregnant Roxane would give birth to a son who could be king, but Ptolemy and others disliked being ruled by the son of an Asian mother. The general Meleager objected to being ruled by Perdiccas in a regency and walked out to join disgruntled soldiers. To avoid civil war, someone suggested Philip 's son Arrhidaeus could be king as Philip III, and though considered retarded, he had enough presence to prevent imminent fighting; it was agreed that Meleager would be a third general after Craterus and Perdiccas. A barbaric Macedonian ritual was arranged in which a dog was cut in two, and the army was supposedly purified. At the urging of Perdiccas though, Philip III allowed 300 men, who had instigated the discord with Meleager, to be trampled to death by the elephants, and Meleager was later murdered in a temple. It was decided that the king would hold supreme power with Ptolemy satrap in Egypt and Libya, Leomodon in Syria, Philotas in Cilicia, Antigonus in Lycia and greater Phrygia, Cassander in Caria, Menander in Lydia, Leonnatus in western Phrygia, Eumenes in Cappadocia, Pithon in Media, Lysimachus in Thrace, and the eastern provinces were to stay the same. Perdiccas was to command the army for the king. Alexander's body in an elaborate funeral procession was headed for Macedonia, but in Damascus it was diverted to Egypt by Ptolemy.

UNITED NATIONS NATO is considering allowing Yugoslav soldiers into a buffer zone that borders Macedonia in an effort to stamp out ethnic Albanian violence. Three soldiers have died in two days amid spiralling disturbances between ethnic Albanians seeking unification with Albania and security forces. Ceasefire in Macedonia 'violated'
Macedonian peace talks resume after a break for the country's national day OHRID, Macedonia Macedonia's government and ethnic Albanian rebels have accused each other of further violating an already shaky ceasefire as political parties resumed peace talks. Rebels were accused by the Defence Ministry of "serious assaults" around the northwestern city of Tetovo, while rebels said Macedonian forces had shelled a nearby village. "The terrorists directly attacked the positions of the security forces with sniper fire, automatic guns, heavy machine guns and shoulder-held rocket launchers," said the ministry, quoted by Reuters. But a rebel commander, codenamed Leka, in turn accused the security forces of shelling around the village of Neprosteno near Tetovo. "The ceasefire doesn't apply to the Macedonian police forces," he told Reuters. Macedonia truce deadline passes
The cease fire is due to begin at 2200 GMT on Thursday SKOPJE, Macedonia (CNN) A NATO-mediated cease-fire between the Macedonian government and ethnic Albanian rebels is now in effect. The deadline passed at midnight local time on Thursday (2200 GMT) but it was preceded by fresh clashes and last-minute manoeuvring by both sides. Fierce shelling was reported in and around the northwestern town of Tetovo in what could have been a last show of force by both sides before the cease-fire was scheduled to take hold. It was reported that the rebels had set up a checkpoint close to one being manned by Macedonian police, near the stadium on the northwest side of the city. The truce is the latest attempt to end four months of fighting. More than a dozen cease-fire agreements have come and gone in recent months with some lasting only a few hours. Washington welcomed the planned cease-fire. "We believe it's a very important and necessary step toward resolving the crisis in Macedonia," State Department spokesman Richard Boucher said, the Associated Press reported.

    Macedonia resumes reforms debate
Protesters outside Macedonia's parliament SKOPJE, Macedonia Macedonia's parliament has resumed debate on reforms outlined in a peace plan designed to end the conflict with ethnic Albanian rebels. The reforms would offer greater political and language rights to the country's ethnic Albanian minority, which makes up about a third of Macedonia's two million people. On Saturday, parliament speaker Stojan Andov suspended the debate, insisting the president guarantee the safe return home of an estimated 120,000 people who fled six months of fighting. President Boris Trajkovski met with Andov on Sunday and gave "assurances that the existing problems would be overcome," according to a presidential statement. "For me, that was enough to restart the process," The Associated Press quoted Andov as saying.
