Macedonia border tense
SKOPJE, Macedonia Macedonian forces and NATO troops in neighbouring Kosovo are trying to seal off an area where ethnic Albanian rebels have attacked government positions. The two forces are working to force out ethnic Albanian guerrillas blamed for an upsurge in violence along the border and for the deaths of three Macedonian soldiers on Sunday. Macedonia insists it has contained the fighting to a handful of villages surrounding Tanusevci, around 20 miles north of the capital Skopje. However, more U.S. peacekeepers were sent to the area after armed rebels pulled back from their base in Tanusevci towards U.S. positions in Kosovo in signs they were extending their activities. Four military trucks from the NATO-led KFOR peacekeeping force arrived in the village of Debelde before positioning themselves on a hill overlooking part of Tanusevci. Unconfirmed reports from Macedonian officials said women and children had fled one village in the Kumanovo area, north of Skopje, saying they had heard shooting as armed groups stepped up their action.

Macedonia moves against rebels
Ethnic Albanian businesses have been targeted by rioters VAKCINCE, Macedonia Macedonian forces have fired rockets near a village evacuated minutes earlier in response to an ambush which claimed two of their soldiers, reports say. A photographer and cameraman from Reuters said they saw two helicopters circling over Vakcince, 5 km (three miles) from the Serb border, firing at houses and a forest. A defence ministry spokesman confirmed Macedonian forces had begun an operation to drive out ethnic Albanian rebels from the area. Two Macedonian soldiers were killed in an ambush by rebels near the village earlier on Thursday. IN-DEPTH Macedonia: Hurdles to peace Balkan hotspots Interactive map Macedonia's military ... In-Depth: Kosovo People living in Vakcince and neighbouring villages were subsequently told to leave the area and head for the region's largest town of Kumanovo by 3 p.m. (1300 GMT) on Thursday, Interior Ministry spokesman Stevo Pendarovski told CNN. The Macedonian security forces also told rebels to "put down their weapons and surrender" and "not to forcefully take local inhabitants and use them as human shields."

Macedonia talks focus on police
Macedonian peace talks resume after a break for the country's national day OHRID, Macedonia Peace talks aimed at ending the conflict between the Macedonian government and ethnic Albanian rebels are due to resume. Well into the fourth week of negotiations, the rival sides are expected to debate on Saturday one of the most contentious parts of the peace plan: the composition and control of the police forces in ethnic-Albanian communities. Macedonians are resisting ethnic Albanian demands that the police be decentralised and the minority be allowed to elect local police chiefs in areas where they dominate, according to The Associated Press. A tentative agreement on the use of the Albanian language was agreed at the talks in Ohrid on Wednesday, removing one of the key sticking points in negotiations. Meanwhile, Macedonia's government and ethnic Albanian rebels have accused each other of further violating an already shaky cease-fire.

Macedonia troops battle for village
The army said it captured rebel artillery LJUBODRAG, Macedonia Fighting has continued between Macedonian troops and ethnic Albanian rebels for control of a northeastern village. The village, Matejce, was shelled on Saturday, as well as the nearby villages of Slupcane and Otlja, about 20 km (13 miles) northeast of the capital Skopje. Villagers of Ljubodrag, a Slav Macedonian village less than three kilometres (1.8 miles) away, used to the shelling, continued working on their fields as smoke billowed in the sky and gunfire could be heard. Soldier killed in Macedonia clash
Pardew and Leotard met with Trajkovski on Tuesday SKOPJE, Macedonia European and U.S. envoys have urged Macedonia's president to redouble efforts at peace talks as the death toll from the violence rises. A soldier was killed on Tuesday when ethnic Albanian rebels ambushed a patrol near the capital Skopje, bringing the number of soldiers killed in the insurgency to 34, an army spokesman told the Associated Press. Army spokesman Colonel Blagoja Markovski said the most serious fighting was around the village of Radusa, 15 miles west of the capital, where the army pounded rebel positions with helicopters. "The rebels have a stronghold there and opened mortar, sniper and gunfire on the Macedonian positions," Markovski said. The clashes came as U.S. special adviser James Pardew and his European Union counterpart, Francois Leotard, met in Skopje with President Boris Trajkovski on Tuesday ahead of a new round of talks between Trajkovski and leaders of Macedonia's main Slav and ethnic Albanian political parties. Macedonia resumes peace debate
Protesters outside Macedonia's parliament SKOPJE, Macedonia Macedonia's parliament has resumed talks on a peace deal with ethnic Albanians. The Western-brokered accord includes making constitutional changes to recognise the Albanian language and needs the backing of parliament. Talks were suspended on Saturday after a heated argument inside the chamber over refugees. The parliament's speaker, Stojan Andov, adjourned the debate after demanding new conditions for the return of the estimated 125,000 Macedonian Slav refugees mainly from Kosovo. But Macedonian President Boris Trajkovski gave Andov "assurances that the existing problems would be overcome," according to a statement. Analysis: Macedonia's strained alliance
By Gordana Icevska SKOPJE, Macedonia The biggest victim of the fighting in Macedonia is trust among politicians and ordinary people from different ethnic backgrounds. As the fighting continues, people are becoming increasingly nervous and beginning to lose their patience. All Macedonian governments since the country's independence in 1990 have been multi-ethnic. IN-DEPTH Macedonia: Hurdles to peace Balkan hotspots Interactive map Macedonia's military ... In-Depth: Kosovo The current government, established in 1998, was impressive because it joined the nationalist Macedonian party, the Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organisation-Democratic Party for Macedonian National Unity (VMRO-DPMNE) and the radical ethnic Albanian party, the Democratic Party of Albanians (DPA). Both parties have moderated their policies and have compromised to find answers to the ethnic Albanian "minority question."

Police threat to Macedonia peace
NATO collected rebel weapons while parliament delayed adopting reforms SKOPJE, Macedonia Macedonian police units are to be deployed in rebel strongholds in the former Yugoslav republic, government officials have announced. But international mediators are attempting to persuade the interior ministry to drop the plan that could threaten the country's fragile peace process. Officers could be deployed in the rebel areas as early as Thursday before parliament has formally adopted its side of the peace agreement which includes granting amnesty to the ethnic Albanian rebels. The peace deal demands that rebels surrender weapons to a NATO force and that the Macedonia's parliament adopts constitutional changes giving greater rights to the country's ethnic Albanians. Rebels have handed in their weapons an operation called a resounding success by NATO but so far parliament has delayed adopting the reforms, which Western officials say must become law before government forces can retake control of the rebel strongholds.
