Macedonia riots alarm EU
Wreckage from shops litters the streets of Bitola BRUSSELS, Belgium European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana has expressed his "deep alarm" over the latest rioting in Macedonia. Solana spoke out after ethnic Slavs went on the rampage in the ex-Yugoslav republic following the deaths of eight Macedonian soldiers at the hands of ethnic Albanian militants. A curfew was imposed on the city of Bitola late on Wednesday, the scene of some of the worst of the rioting. At least 10 shops in the ethnically-mixed city were destroyed on Tuesday, a night after dozens of buildings were damaged by young Slavs setting fire to them. In-Depth: Kosovo Solana said: "I am deeply alarmed by the latest episodes of ethnically motivated violence in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. "Such incidents risk disrupting the enhanced dialogue under the leadership of President Boris Trajkovski and are seriously endangering relations between the ethnic communities of the country."

Macedonia talks to resume
Leotard and Pardew are hopeful of a final peace deal being reached quickly OHRID, Macedonia (CNN) Peace talks are due to resume in Macedonia on Friday with Western envoys hoping to seal a deal at the weekend. But sporadic clashes and a speech by Prime Minister Ljubco Georgievski have dampened optimism, Reuters reported. Georgievski said military action should be used to recapture territory held by ethnic Albanian rebels, saying a peace deal could not be signed while rebels remain a threat. But he also expressed hope of reaching a deal. A tentative deal on the use of the Albanian language was agreed at the talks in Ohrid on Wednesday. Also on Thursday, Reuters said a 25-year-old policeman was shot and wounded in the chest by rebels near the northwestern town of Tetovo. Doctors said his wound was not life-threatening.

Aid fears for Macedonia villagers
Thursday's fighting centred on the village of Matejce SKOPJE, Macedonia Thousands of civilians remain trapped in Macedonia's northeastern mountains by the conflict between government troops and ethnic Albanian rebels. About 8,000 mostly ethnic Albanian villagers have been caught in the battle zone since May 3. The latest fighting lasted into Thursday night and focused on the village of Matejca, infiltrated by the rebels last week, army spokesman Blagoja Markovski and a rebel commander calling himself Shpati told Reuters news agency. Neither side reported casualties. International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) spokeswoman in Skopje, Annick Bouvier, said the ICRC did not have enough security guarantees from both sides to try to get into the Lipkovo area, about 20 km (13 miles) northeast of Skopje, where most of the civilians are hiding in basements and cellars. Macedonia fighting as peace sought
Pardew and Leotard met with Trajkovski on Tuesday SKOPJE, Macedonia Sporadic fighting in Macedonian villages has continued as U.S. and European envoys seek a peaceful end to the crisis. Defence Minister Vlado Buckovski described the situation as "extremely dangerous, with the tendency to deteriorate further." "It has come to a phase where solutions can only be reached through a political dialogue," he told Associated Press. But Buckovski said the rebels were "growing more radical" and might scuttle peace talks. Government troops clashed with ethnic Albanian rebels on the slopes of Mount Sara near the border with Kosovo, Army spokesman Col. Blagoja Markovski told Associated Press. IN-DEPTH Macedonia: Hurdles to peace Balkan hotspots Interactive map Macedonia's military ... In-Depth: Kosovo Markovski said the rebels fired machine guns at troops in the villages of Slupcane, just outside the northern city of Kumanovo, and in nearby Opaje. There were also clashes near the rebel-held village of Nikustak, where the army said the rebels were "massing, regrouping and taking up new positions."

New crisis hits Macedonia's peace
A protester holds a Macedonian flag outside the Macedonian parliament building on Friday SKOPJE, Macedonia NATO has warned Macedonian politicians that its role in the peace accord could be threatened by the suspension of the country's parliament. Macedonian politicians brought a halt to talks on the peace agreement on Saturday after complaints that ethnic Albanian rebels were blocking the repatriation of Slav refugees. The parliamentary speaker Stojan Andov said. "We cannot continue while terrorists continue to harass and block (Macedonian) refugees trying to return to their homes." About 350 Macedonians who were trying to revisit homes behind rebel lines were marooned overnight on the wrong side of barricades, before being let through. Andov refused to endorse the restart of the parliamentary session until the demand for more of the thousands of refugees still stranded in Kosovo be allowed home was met. Macedonia seeks diplomatic answer
The EU wants to find a solution to the recent fighting SKOPJE, Macedonia Macedonia is to start talks with ethnic Albanians in an effort to bridge its bitter ethnic divide and resolve the violence. Macedonian President Boris Trajkovski will chair talks between all of Macedonia's political leaders on ways to ease the grievances of the ethnic Albanian minority. The main ethnic Albanian leader, a key partner in Macedonia's fragile coalition government, has warned he will quit if demands are not met within a month leaving the men with guns to fight for Albanian rights. Slav politicians led by Prime Minister Ljubco Georgievski are wary of a nationalist backlash from their own constituency if they concede too much. Ethnic Albanian politicians are seeking greater rights for their community, including constitutional change.

Macedonia accuses rebels
Operation Essential Harvest troops attached to NATO begin to pull out of Macedonia SKOPJE, Macedonia Ethnic Albanian rebels have been accused by Macedonia's government of shooting at a police checkpoint on the outskirts of the city of Tetovo. The rebels recently took part in a weapons amnesty conducted by a NATO force and last week announced that they were disbanding following a Western-brokered peace agreement. Police spokesman Viktor Sutarov told The Associated Press that the Macedonian police officers returned fire from the checkpoint and that the main police station in Tetovo also came under fire. He said there were no injuries in the incident. An ethnic Albanian rebel commander, who asked not to be named, told AP the shooting was a "provocation" by Macedonian government forces. Gunmen take hostages in Macedonia
TETOVO, Macedonia (CNN) Several gunmen took over buses Sunday carrying workers to a factory about five miles north of Tetovo after Macedonian police arrested seven former members of the National Liberation Army, including three commanders. According to another ex-NLA commander, the gunmen released a few of the hostages but still had others. It's not known how many hostages were originally taken. Negotiators from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and other international groups were talking with the gunmen later Sunday. The incident prompted the Macedonian government to cancel an important session of the parliament for Monday, in which representatives were to vote on the amendments to the modified preamble of the country's constitution. Press Release
SC/6648
SECURITY COUNCIL FAILS TO EXTEND MANDATE OF UNITED NATIONS PREVENTIVE DEPLOYMENT FORCE IN FORMER YUGOSLAV REPUBLIC OF MACEDONIA
Draft Resolution Supported by 13 Members; China Votes Against; Russian Federation Abstains A veto by China this afternoon prevented the Security Council from authorizing an extension of the United Nations Preventive Deployment Force (UNPREDEP) in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia for a further six months, until 31 August. By a vote of 13 in favour to 1 against (China), with 1 abstention (Russian Federation), the Council failed to adopt the eight-Power draft resolution. The Secretary-General had recently recommended to the Council the extension of UNPREDEP, saying it had so far contributed successfully to preventing the spillover of conflicts elsewhere in the region to the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. The Force's mandate, set to expire on 28 February, has been in effect since March 1995, when the Council authorized it to monitor and report any developments in the border areas which could undermine confidence and stability in the territory; since last year, its mandate has been expanded to include monitoring and reporting on illicit arms flows and other related activities.
