When Slovenia declared its independence in 1991, it issued a banknote depicting an Austrian throne of the fourteenth century. Austria immediately accused Slovenia of an infringement upon its history and its symbols and demanded that the banknote be withdrawn. The Slovenians complied. Under the circumstances, how should Greece react, given the fact that FYROM - as attested by its new school textbooks for 1992-3 - appropriate the whole of Macedonian history which is a cherished element of the Greek national and cultural identity? The Hellenistic period (335-30 BC) was created by Alexander the Great and his Greek Macedonian diadochi, and was so named because it was, during that period, that the Hellenic culture was diffused throughout the world. It brought new scientific, philosophical, and religious ideas that dominated the world for centuries and influenced the development of all cultures. Can these achievements, by any stress of imagination, be attributed to the... ancestors of FYROM? Their ancestors came into the area centuries after that period. The Russian historian Avraam B. Rankovitch (of the Soviet Academy of Sciences), in his book, Hellenistic Period, p. 285, writes:

Macedonian History
The people of Macedonia share a rich cultural heritage. The region has been the subject of many conflicts in the past. Some of you may have emmigrated to other parts of the world, some may have parents or grandparents who left to make their way in other lands. A few of you have stayed to make your life in your homeland, regardless of the difficult times.
Each of us has his or her own personal history to share. We invite you to send us your story. We will gladly welcome your e-mail, or if you prefer, audio tapes telling the story of your family. We will make this information available so that everyone can share their experiences and memories.
We realize that few things can spark such passionate feelings as the memories of our family and our homeland, but we ask that everyone try to focus on the accomplishments and character of their ancestors, and avoid turning this into a debate over the politics and geography of the current governments. Many things have shaped the past and future of Macedonia, and there are a number of more appropriate forums for discussion on these topics.
No one who knows anything of the past can be free of opinions on these subjects, but we prefer to acknowledge and celebrate the

Country Info Macedonia Introduction Macedonia General Data Macedonia Maps Macedonia Culture ... Macedonia Time and Date Macedonia ( Yugoslav Republic ) History Back to Top Throughout its history, the present-day territory of Macedonia has been a crossroads for both traders and conquerors moving between the European Continent and Asia Minor. Each of these transiting powers left its mark upon the region, giving rise to a rich and varied cultural and historical tradition. The ancient territory of Macedon, included, in addition to the areas of the present-day Macedonia, large parts of present-day Northern Greece and Southwestern Bulgaria. This ancient kingdom reached its height during the reign of Alexander III ("the Great"), who extended Macedon's influence over most of Asia Minor, the Levant, Egypt, Mesopotamia, Persia, and even parts of India. After Alexander's death in 323 BC, the Macedon Empire gradually declined, until it was conquered in 168 BC and made a province by the Romans in 148 BC. After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, the territory of Macedonia fell under the control of the Byzantine Empire. It was during this period (the 6th and 7th centuries) that large groups of Slavic people migrated to the Balkan region. The Serbs, Bulgarians, and Byzantines fought for control of Macedonia until the late 14th century, when the territory was again conquered, this time by the Ottoman Turks and remained under Turkish rule until 1912.

APO - Albanian Power Online© MACEDONIA - History HOME NEWS MUSIC SPORTS ... CITIES HISTORY MAP GOVERNMENT TENSIONS I n the 1950`s and 60`s during the reign of the interior minister Aleksander Rankovic, more than 450.000 Albanians were deported to Turkey, and tens of thousands were tortured. This led to the purification of cities like Shkup (Skopje) and Monsatir (Bitola) of Albanians.
At present in Bitola, Albanian houses are once again destroyed and the Albanian population chased away from their homes. Before the independence of Macedonia in 1992, the Albanians enjoyed the same constitutional rights as the Slav-Macedonians. However, the Albanians were discriminated against in everyday life. After 1992, Macedonia changed its constitution at the expense of the non-Slav people living in Macedonia. Although the Albanians compose around 40% of the whole population in Macedonia, the Macedonian government asserts that Albanians are only one of the minority populations in Macedonia and cannot, therefore, make claims of equality as a people.
Tensions between the Albanians and Macedonia started well before the republic's declaration of independence. Since 1981 many Albanians have been dismissed from their jobs by the Macedonian authorities. The army, the police, the judiciary and the economy have largely been dominated by Macedonians and they have generally decided who is to get jobs and licenses. A large portion of the Albanian population was forced to seek work abroad since there have not been enough job opportunities in the FYROM.

History of Macedonia in Ottoman Times
The economic legacy of Turkish rule is also important. During the expansionist phase of the empire, Turkish feudalism consisted principally of the timar system of "tax farming," whereby local officeholders raised revenue or supported troops in the sultan's name but were not landowners. As the distinctively military aspects of the Ottoman order declined after the 18th century, these privileges were gradually transformed in some areas into the çiftlik system, which more closely resembled proprietorship over land. This process involved the severing of the peasantry from their traditional rights on the land and a corresponding creation of large estates farmed on a commercial basis. The çiftlik thus yielded the paradox of a population that was heavily influenced by Ottoman culture yet bound into an increasingly oppressive economic subordination to Turkish landlords. The independence movement
The closing decades of the 19th century saw deepening conflict and confusion in Macedonia. As the Turkish Empire decayed, Serbia, Greece, and Bulgaria all looked to benefit territorially from the approaching carve-up of Macedonia. At the same time, these indigenous states all became in different ways stalking horses for the aspirations of the European Great Powers. The weapons employed in this conflict ranged widely; they included the opening of schools in an attempt to inculcate a particular linguistic and confessional identity, the control of ecclesiastical office, influence over the course of railway building, diplomatic attempts to secure the ear of the Sublime Porte, and even the financing of guerrilla bands.

discover the truth by yourself ! D uring the last few years there's been some confusion about the Macedonians , their connection with the Greeks, and as a result, the continuation of the Greek (Hellenic) history. That confusion is artificial and it is:
  • Generated by FYROM ( Former Yugoslavian Republic of Macedonia ) and several factors that wish to serve their own interests by creating trouble in the Balkans, and, Conserved by the same factors and other people who have been misled into some weird hypothesis, as a result of a well designed propaganda.
T his Web Page doesn't have any purpose to act as propaganda, with long and boring documents. The main purpose is to demonstrate the arguments of both sides, along with the facts so that the reader will discover the truth and will be able to distinguish it from the ridiculus theories that are so easily presented, but stand up to no critisism. I promise that you will be amazed by the extent of the distortion of history, and amused by the basis on which that distortion is set upon! . . . W hat's all the trouble about?
