Foreign Policy Search Macedonia -The Biblical land AN OUTLINE OF MACEDONIAN HISTORY FROM ANCIENT TIMES TO 1991 Macedonia is a historical region that originates from the ancient period. The zenith of the Macedonian kingdom, its unity, independence and predominance – political, military and economic – reached its apogee in the 4 th century BC when the famous Philip II ( – 336 B.C.) and Alexander III (356 - 323 B.C.) ruled the prestigious Kingdom of Macedonia the Great. After the dissolution of the Empire, the territory of Macedonia fell first under Roman and later under Byzantine rule. In the course of several centuries, the ancient Macedonians mixed with other ethnic groups such as Roman colonists. The penetration of Slavic tribes towards the Balkans ended at the beginning of the seventh century and created a new situation – Macedonia’s population mixed with the Slav newcomers but retained the Macedonian name, traditions and culture. At the beginning of this period the Macedonians were organized independently in their own tribal communities (sklavinas). Later, they fell under Byzantine and Bulgarian rule, alternatively. The history of the ancient Macedonian kingdom begins with Caranus, who was the first known Macedonian King (808-778 BC). By the 5th century BC the Macedonians expanded and forged a unified kingdom under Alexander I (498-454 B.C.) Also known as Alexander the Great.

International recognition of The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia's (FYROM) independence from Yugoslavia in 1991 was delayed by Greece's objection to the new state's use of what it considered a Hellenic name and symbols. Greece finally lifted its trade blockade in 1995, and the two countries agreed to normalize relations. FYROM's large Albanian minority and the de facto independence of neighboring Kosovo continue to be sources of ethnic tension.

Macedonia History Macedonia Community In the early 1800's a young man named Henry Woods came across a stream he named Indian Run. Some years later, a man named Abraham Cranmer from Northfield purchased 90 acres of property near Indian Run at the intersection of Jenkins and N. Bedford Roads. This is where he built his home in 1824, the first log house in this new settlement. Soon other people moved to this new settlement known as "The Corners". A log school house was built in 1833, a frame church in 1835, and there was an Inn for weary travelers on the stage coach line from Pittsburgh to Cleveland. In the early years of this new settlement, young theology students from Western Reserve College in Hudson were asked to come to "The Corner" to preach on Sundays at the Free Will Baptist Church. Within their own little circle these theologians began using the biblical passage, "Come over into Macedonia and help us", when referring to their Sunday preaching visit. Either by accident or by divine intervention, the little settlement at "The Corners" became permanently know as Macedonia.

  • Modern times Occupying the bigger part of northern Greece, Macedonia first appears on the historical scene as a geographical-political unit in the 5th century BC, when it extended from the upper waters of the Haliakmon and Mount Olympus to the river Strymon. In the following century it reached the banks of the Nestos. The history of the Macedonians, however, may be said to commence somewhere around the beginning of the 7th century BC; at this time the Greek tribe of the Makedones, whose home was in Orestis, began to expand, driving out the Thracians and contending with the Illyrians, and gradually occupied Eordaia, Bottiaia, Pieria and Almopia, finally settling in the region called by Thucydides "Lower Macedonia, or Macedonia by the Sea".
    Prehistoric period
This region of high mountains, large rivers, lakes and fertile plains makes its appearance on the stage of civilization as early as the Early Neolithic Period (Nea Nikomedeia, region of Yanitsa). The density of the settlements, however, shows a vertical increase at the end of the 5th millennium BC (Late Middle Neolithic) and attests, throughout the whole of the region though especially in central and east Macedonia, to significant mobility on the part of the population and to its characteristic dynamism. These same settlements prospered until the Early Bronze Age - that is, until the beginning of the 3rd millennium BC -most of them organized in the plains, with houses either square or rectangular in plan, sometimes with wooden posts and sometimes with stone foundations for the walls.
